Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesReally nothing.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Shikitei. The service was exceptional from the time we were greeted at arrival until the time we departed. It is in an excellent location and right at Nara Park where we can see deer from our room. Staying at Shikitei made our Nara visit more memorable!

United KingdomIt didn’t really matter but maybe communication could have been slightly better. When we arrived we found out there was a tea ceremony included that we didn’t realise so didn’t end up having time for. Communication before check in was probably less than we had from other places in Japan but again no issues at all when we arrived. Maybe check in earlier than 3pm would work better if there’s lots of activities for people to do in the accommodation otherwise there’s no time when you’re only in Nara for one night.
Amazing friendly service and a gorgeous authentic Japanese room with tea and snacks on arrival. Perfect location right next door to Nara park. Bags taken to room for you, shoes heated and dried. Really professional and luxury.

It’s the best of Japanese style Ryokan hotel that we have experienced in Japan so far. The personalised service is warm and wonderful. It reflects Japanese culture in a respect of people who are ultra-polite, diligent, thoughtful, meticulous and artistic tasteful. good location - Nara Park… etc. and local specialty shopping streets nearby.

NetherlandsWe had to walk through the Nara park and through the wave of tourists and deer with our luggage which was a bit if a struggle, but fortunately it’s only a 10 minute walk.
Had an amazing time at this Ryokan in the middle of the Nara deer park. Location is great. I’d highly recommend going here for a night in the middle of your trip to rewind and relax. We picked the traditional dinner and breakfast which was a unique experience. The food was indeed very Japanese as mentioned in some reviews, and with that I don’t mean fried katsu or loaded ramen. You need to have a bit of an open mind for different foods as the flavors and textures can be very unusual to Westerners. But I really liked the experience! Staff is extremely friendly and calm, the bath was nice, the public bath allowed for tattoos and the room and sleeping on the tatami was also very cozy! This was a highlight of our trip.

The traditional dinner and breakfast were exquisite, beautifully presented and full of flavor. The location is perfect — walking distance to Nara Park and temples, yet quiet and serene. SwitzerlandBreakfast time has to be booked in advance, with the last possible time 8:30, which might be a bit strict for jet-lagged guests. The room can’t be made fully dark, which however is almost always the case for traditional Japanese houses
Outstanding service even by Japanese standards. The superior family room was nice and spacey

CanadaThe food is also traditional style - it is great to try as an experience, but the taste could be very different from the modern style Japanese food.
