This resort was unbelievable. My wife and I’s favorite hotel that we have ever been to.

There was nothing that we didn’t like about this ryokan.

    Property response:

Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us. To hear that your time at Shōraisō was your favorite of all your hotel experiences truly humbles us—it means the world. It's like hearing a cherished melody played just for us. Every detail of your stay, especially the meals, was prepared with the same care and pride you might find at a once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Knowing that it resonated with you makes all of our efforts worthwhile. Even now, the mountains of Nagano are lush and peaceful, and the steam from our hot springs still rises gently into the early summer air. Whenever you need a break from the everyday and want to feel truly taken care of again, we hope you’ll think of us. We would be honored to welcome you back anytime.

The calm, peaceful and simple luxury. The private onsen and garden in the room are incredibly relaxing. The dinner and breakfast are superb. I have a fish allergy and chef tweaked the menu keeping the quality and range of dishes delicious and exciting. We stayed in Kiku. Very comfortable futon beds and great sleep. The staff are superb, kind and professional.

Nothing. We wish we could have stayed longer and will return!

    Property response:

Thank you very much for your recent stay and for your gracious words. Nestled in the serene mountains of Yudanaka, where spring lingers like a soft veil, we are truly honored that your time with us offered a retreat from the rush of daily life—a moment of stillness wrapped in understated luxury. It warms our hearts to know that your stay in the Kiku room brought you comfort, and that the private onsen and garden provided quiet moments of reflection and rest. We are especially grateful for your kind remarks on our cuisine. Accommodating your dietary needs without compromising on variety or delight is something our chef and kitchen staff take great pride in. To hear that each dish was still exciting and enjoyable is the highest compliment. Your praise of our staff touches us deeply. At Shōraisō, it is our mission to provide not only comfort, but also the kind of attentiveness that allows our guests to feel completely at ease. Your words reassure us that we are fulfilling that purpose. You mentioned you wished you could have stayed longer—how beautifully said. We, too, wish your visit could have stretched on like the late spring twilight. Until we have the pleasure of welcoming you back, we shall be here, with the rustling pines and the spirit of hospitality ready to embrace you once more. Warmest regards, Shōraisō

It is by far the most outstanding place we have stayed in throughout Japan. The level of service excellence, the amenities and the attention to detail reaches heights unmatched by any other place we have seen or stayed at.

    Property response:

Dear Guests, Your words are received with the deepest gratitude and humility. To be regarded as the most memorable place on your journey through Japan is an honor that stirs our hearts. At Shōraisō, we hold dear the belief that true hospitality lies not only in grand gestures, but in the quiet attentiveness to each moment, each detail—like the precise placement of a seasonal flower, or the warmth of tea prepared just as you like it. It brings us joy to know that this spirit reached you. We consider it a blessing as well to have welcomed you within our walls, where tradition and tranquility embrace those who arrive as guests and leave as cherished friends. When next the mountain mists rise and the winds carry whispers of home, we hope the path may once again guide you back to our doors. With heartfelt appreciation, Shōraisō

Outstanding property from top to bottom. Friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful rooms, fantastic food. A real authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. The rooms have a private hot spring bath and there is the option to use the public baths as well. The private dining experience was first class food and service. The rooms are large and comfortable with everything you need to relax.

I think they should offer the pickup shuttle during the booking process. We walked from the train station with 3 suitcases in the snow, which was not that far but uphill and a bit inconvenient. However I should have enquired about this myself so it's really not a big deal and the service overall was outstanding

    Property response:

Thank you very much for your gracious words and for choosing to stay at Shōraisō. We are deeply honored to know that your time with us left a lasting impression. To offer our guests a haven where the spirit of traditional Japan lives on—through our cuisine, architecture, and heartfelt service—is the essence of what we strive for. It brings us joy to hear that you found comfort and delight in both the privacy of your room’s bath and the seasonal tastes of our dining. Regarding your thoughtful note on transportation: we sincerely appreciate your feedback. For future guests, please allow us to share that our shuttle service may indeed be reserved in advance. Additionally, during key train arrivals, a member of our staff awaits at the station, holding a flag bearing our inn’s crest to guide guests warmly to our doorstep—even in the snow-draped hush of winter. Your kind understanding humbles us, and we hope that the next time the seasons beckon you back to the mountain village, the path to our door will be as smooth as the hospitality that awaits within. With our deepest gratitude, Shōraisō

We had a great stay at Shoraiso for our honeymoon in December. Service is unparalleled and the staff are doing above and beyond to make us feel like home without being intrusive. We love the elephant decor of the room and the beautifully landscaped garden, and the private onsen is definitely the highlight of our trip. Breakfast and dinner are included and the food is just exceptional (very tasty with fresh local ingredient and creative presentation). The location is quite convenient - 45min train from Nagano to Yudanaka station and hotel is just a few min drive away (the hotel can arrange pick up). Monkey park is quite close (around 15min taxi away). Overall we couldn’t recommend this hotel more!

    Nothing. Everything is perfect.

    Property response:

Dear Yuemeng, Thank you very much for choosing Shōraisō for your honeymoon, and for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review. We are truly honored to have been part of such a special journey for you both. It brings us great joy to know that our service made you feel at home while still allowing for privacy and relaxation—this balance is something we deeply value. Your kind words about the elephant-themed décor, the tranquil garden, and especially the private onsen as the highlight of your trip, warm our hearts. We are also delighted that you enjoyed the seasonal meals crafted with local ingredients and a touch of artistry, as well as the peaceful atmosphere of your stay. Thank you for sharing helpful information about the location and access as well. The Snow Monkey Park is indeed one of the most beloved destinations in this region, and we are glad you found it convenient to visit. Your note about travel time and proximity will surely be appreciated by future guests. We hope the memories of your winter honeymoon in Yudanaka will stay with you for years to come, and we would be honored to welcome you back in a different season, when the landscape transforms once again. Amazing property with even more amazing staff. We stayed for two night during our honeymoon and couldn’t be happier with the experience. It was an authentic yet luxurious Ryokan. Our room was beautifully decorated, spotless and it even had its own onsen. The food was exceptional and the staff was very well trained and extremely friendly. Highly recommended this hotel and would love to go back on day.

The staff is kind, it’s a very clean facility and the location is pretty nice.

The bed. Their idea of a western bed is nuts. Worst bed I slept in, in Japan. Maybe one of the worst beds on a vacation - ever. It was like sleeping just on a box springs, no mattress.
