Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomEverything about our stay was perfect. We were made to feel at home. A great way for us to spend our honeymoon and to experience a traditional Japanese inn. Loved using the onsen and the food was exceptional, barely needed any lunch with such a big breakfast and dinner. Maki-san helped us with directions for hiking to the shrines and was a generous and caring host throughout.

SingaporeThere’s nothing we don’t like A note to those with difficulties managing stairs - the rooms we slept in were located upstairs
We had a truly magical stay at Maki-san’s ryokan, a charming property built by her great-grandfather over 90 years ago. Maki-san is an exceptionally gracious and thoughtful host, attending to every detail with genuine care. She prepared the most sumptuous home-cooked breakfasts and dinners for us, with each meal beautifully served on heirloom dining ware passed down through her family. We truly felt like royalty being treated to such warmth and hospitality. Before our stay, Maki-san thoughtfully checked in about our children’s dietary preferences. Her kindness shone through in the generous and delicious portions she specially prepared for our two boys — they absolutely loved her cooking. The ryokan offers two types of onsen baths and two bathrooms, which our family thoroughly enjoyed throughout our stay. Maki-san also made sure each of us had a yukata that fit perfectly and suited our preferences — another small but meaningful touch that reflected her attentiveness in every way. One especially memorable gesture was when she surprised our children with Japanese mini fireworks on our last evening, knowing that fireworks aren’t something we can easily experience back home. It was such a beautiful and thoughtful experience that our family will never forget. The ryokan is set in a quiet, safe neighborhood where we woke up each morning to the peaceful sound of birdsong. We also fell in love with her sweet dog, Kenta, and her cat — we already miss Kenta dearly. We would return to her wonderful ryokan in a heartbeat and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic and heartwarming Japanese experience.

United StatesIt’s a bit far from Kyoto and Tokyo. Worth a 2 night visit though in our opinion!
Miko is a wonderful host and made our visit very special! Her mother makes the meals that are both delicious and beautifully presented. Miko kindly explains what all the food is and where the products are from. The products are all premium quality. The Ryokan is located in Togakushi that is known for spring water, soba noodles, mountain shrines, and being a ninja training ground in the past. It also has two onsen baths, one with dark water and the other with clear that offer different skin benefits. They are both wonderful. Beyond eating delicious food and soaking in the onsen, there are paths to some beautiful mountain shrines nearby, a mirror lake, a ninja museum, and a soba museum where you can learn to make soba noodles. We really enjoyed the mountain shrines and the ninja museum. Highly recommend. Miko gave us a lot of special attention was wonderful to talk to about Japanese culture and helping plan activities.

Beautiful classic ryokan in a stunning natural setting! Maki is an absolute gem. Sweet, kind and extremely helpful and accommodating. We wanted to take her home with us. And the food! Her 82 year old mother makes it and it is out of this world! The full kaiseki meal. The ryokan sits right beside one of the 5 temples on the stunning Togakushi trail so all you have to do is walk out the front door for an amazing hike and adventure. Our family of four thought this was our best stay/experience in our 16 day trip through Japan! Do yourself a favor and stay here! (Just watch out for the ninja cat!😁)

United StatesMy family and I had a truly unforgettable experience and stay at Yadoya-Shiroganeya. This little Inn is so charming and the host Maki-San was so very kind and welcoming and hands down, the best host we have ever had. We truly enjoyed experiencing traditional Japanese living and dining. The food Maki-San and her mother made was nothing short of spectacular and there was so much variety. We never left hungry to say the least. Our breakfasts and dinners were made with locally-sourced ingredients and beautifully prepared and presented to us. Among the highlights were fresh sashimi, seasonal vegetables, local beef, tempura, soba noodles, Nagano apples, just to name a few. They were quite honestly the best meals we had in Japan. We also really enjoyed the private onsen as it was so relaxing and a pure delight to experience. While we enjoyed our entire 2 week trip to Japan and we would want to return again, we all agree this would be the one exact destination we would return to again in a heartbeat.

GermanyOur stay at Yadoya-Shiroganeya was nothing short of magical. Firstly, the house itself is beautiful and incredibly well kept. It's like stepping into a time machine but also with some modern conveniences. Secondly, Maki-San, the host, is wonderful. She's warm and welcoming and communicates very well in English. We had such a good time learning about the house, its history, and also about herself and how she runs the place. Thirdly, the food. I cannot stress enough how much of a culinary experience this is. The food served by Maki and her mother is exceptional. Locally-sourced and impeccably prepared, we had everything from fresh sashimi, seasonal vegetables, local beef, tempura, and soba noodles. It was honestly one of the best meals we had in Japan! The food alone makes price justifiable, never mind the rest of the experience. An absolute highlight of our trip, we'd love to stay with Maki again one day.

This was a truly unforgettable experience—one of the most special places we visited during our trip to Japan. A genuine ryokan that I wholeheartedly recommend to everyone. Maki is, without a doubt, one of the kindest and most wonderful hosts we’ve ever met in our lives. The meals were absolutely delicious, and the private onsen was pure perfection. It’s a place that captured our hearts, and we can’t wait to return someday

United StatesNothing. Everything was perfect. We'll be back again if given a chance. We hope this place is around 1000 more years times 10.
Tsukada Maki san was an amazing host. She speaks an impressive amount of English especially for being in a fairly remote area. The area was beautiful, especially with the light snow, but was actually warmer than Tokyo. We took a 2 hour train ride from Tokyo to Nagano station then an hour bus ride up the mountain to the Ryokan. Maki was there at the bus stop waiting to pick us up even though it was less than a 5 min walk. (Side note: if you are going to take the bus up the mountain which is the only way there other than driving yourself, or a taxi maybe; be advised to get to nagano station before 12. For us we did not know the express bus up the mountain was a reserved seat only, and stopped around 4. We had to get a local bus, and wait an hour for it. This was not an issue with booking or Maki, this was our fault for not looking earlier but it's something I want to advise other visitors about. There aren't many busses up there and they only run once an hour or so.) I'd like to highlight the exceptional service she provided. We got in pretty late but she was still amazingly helpful, bright, and kind. They still Gabe us dinner even though I fully expected to have to forfeit it since we were late. I don't want to give everything away but the food was amazing. A hand made 7 course meal with local ingredients made by her mother who should have 3 Michelin stars. Maki was also very informative about the area, traditions, shrines, soba, and other info about the history and surrounding area. See described the food in great detail which added to the experience and love we had for all the food they made. Sleep was comfortable and the 2 room sleeping space was more than adequate for 2 people, I'd say it could fit 4 people fairly comfortabley maybe 6 could squeeze in, but if you had more than 6 you probably need to rent out the other room. She also has a dog Ken san, who greets you when you forst get there, and a cat who was very goofy.

AustraliaA truly unforgettable and heartwarming stay Staying at Yadoya Shiroganeya was one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Japan. Maki was the best host we’ve ever had – incredibly kind, thoughtful, and warm. She made us feel so welcome, like we were staying with family. And in an act of unbelievable generosity, she even drove us all the way back to Nagano, a 30-minute trip that would’ve taken over an hour by bus. We were honestly so touched. The ryokan is in a peaceful, rural mountain village, surrounded by nature and quiet beauty. There’s a shrine right next door, and just walking around the area felt calming and special. The onsen was amazing – private, serene, and the perfect way to relax after a day out. The whole place has such an authentic, traditional feel – you can tell it’s been lovingly cared for over many years. One of the most meaningful parts of the stay was being cooked for by Maki’s elderly mother. It was an honour to be served food prepared with such care and heart. Every meal was delicious, generous, and deeply comforting – it truly felt like home-style Japanese cooking, and we’ll never forget it. Also, we absolutely loved the friendly dog and cat – both were so cute and added an extra layer of warmth to the whole experience. If you’re looking for a stay that’s peaceful, authentic, and full of genuine connection, this is the place. We left feeling so grateful and already talking about coming back one day. Thank you, Maki, for everything!

AustraliaWe had the best experience, we are so pleased we booked to stay here, we are a family of 6 including 2 teenagers, 2 smaller children and we were made to feel very welcome. We were a little worried about food as there are no shops around but there was so much amazing quality food we didn’t need lunch. The area is very quiet but there is a great bus service that is easily accessible..The rooms are large and Maki and her family made us feel nothing was to much trouble, she taught us about Japanese traditions and the children loved dressing up in the beautiful yakuta for meals. We stayed over Christmas and it was so special.

SingaporeShiroganeya is a traditional Japanese minshuku. Our host Maki-san was truly exceptional. She made sure our family of 6 were well-fed, well-rested, and well-prepared for our little hike to the main Togakushi shrine, which is a 7-min drive away. The dinner prepared for us was superb as well - at least 7-courses! I liked that the house itself has a lot of history. Dinner is served with precious chinaware that are more than a century-old, but still in very good shape and colour. There is adequate heating throughout the house, especially important for a cold winter stay. Maki-san also had a stash of toy cars and trains that kept our boy occupied. There’s just so much to rave about this place. Hopefully we’ll be back for a second visit!

Everything is superb from the traditional house, the Edo and Meiji period artwork, the hospitality by the owner, one of the best meals we have had, made with local food, etc. The hospitality really made our stay very special and one we will not forget. It was Maki and her mother who made our stay exceptional. Maki is an excellent host and very caring person. She was very accommodating during our stay. Moreover, the food was exceptional. We were really surprised at the breadth and quality of the food, and the time spent explaining what we ate. It was Japanese home cooking at its finest and I will say better than many of the pricier restaurants anywhere in Japan.
