How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewModern and luxurious building but traditional ryokan inside with spectacular private onsen located on top floor. Highly professional and exquisitely caring staff that can provide also transfer from Yudanaka station and to Snow Monkey Park free of charge. Dinner and breakfast simply fabulous both from a quality and variety point of view. Spacious, clean and comfortable room have made our stay at Suminoyu memorable. Highly recommended

Verified reviewStayed one night, but the experience was worth the trip from Nagano. Public warm bath, good traditional dinner and breakfast. A bit far from the station but the owners picked us up (7 people) at the station...

Verified reviewThe food was amazing, both dinner and breakfast. Delicious, healthy, beautifully-presented and leaning heavily on locally-sourced ingredients, especially a gorgeous assortment of mushrooms. The staff were consistently wonderful, helpful and warm. Before we arrived, we thought that the ryokan was a little pricey, but once we saw the quality of the half-board, it became clear that it is in fact excellent value for money. A delightful surprise.
Everything was great.

Verified reviewIt was a great stay, very relaxing, and the food was excellent. I only regret having to leave in a rush because I had poorly planned my day - would definitely have liked to leave with more calm.

Verified reviewThe accessibility to the shibu onsens. One of the few properties that will provide you the master keys for the onsens. I was split with the service. The receptions have a good set of really welcoming staffs and a group of staffs that wasnt very helpful compared but they are in general responsive. The really nice staffs do go out even to help us shelter from the rain with umbrellas when we are driving off. But another 2 staffs we encountered were quite nonchalant and cant be bothered. Maybe because we weren’t very well dressed 😆 The interior of the room seems really as zen as it seems on the photos. They took great care in improving the stay.
For the price paid and the location, me and my hubby was looking forward to the food but it was very underwhelming. Breakfast and dinner was disappointing. Not filling enough nor savory enough. Which we werent that picky. It just felt very commercialized and not local like. There is also no shower and bath in the room. Please take note. Its quite tiring to clean up before or after the 9 onsens at shibu as you will have to head up to the inhouse public bath room. The one and only lift is really small and they serve quite a good number of customers so check out maybe a hassle to squeeze or wait again.

Verified reviewWonderful ryokan experience at very reasonable price.Large room, comfortable base for futon style bedding.Kaiseki dinner was amazing.Wonderful staff. Dropped our luggage at second hotel in Shibu onsen. Very few places open for dinner in the town, as close to the end of season, recommend booking half board.
No complaints at all.Exceeded our expectations.

Verified reviewThe way the staff went above and beyond with their service was exemplary. From finding large enough wooden sandals for us; recommending and facilitating a sightseeing tour; offering free use of the lovely kimono for evening meals; and looking after us when illness struck on checkout day- the personal care the owners and staff for our real and perceived needs was first class.

Verified reviewStunning property - excellent service from everyone we encountered. Terrifically traditional Japanese with a retro- modern twist. The meals were amazing kaiseiki style with so many delicious and special Japanese dishes using regional ingredients. Truly incredibly delicious and so worth it. Suminoyu is the real deal and it doesn’t pretend to be anything it is not.
I liked nearly everything though was surprised they only set out our futon beds the 1st night, but didn’t put them away the next day and then set out our futon the 2nd night we stayed. That may have been my fault because when aimed at check in if I wanted “cleaning” both nights we visited I said no thank you. I was unhappy we had to leave so early after check out because the hotel onsen is being cleaned from 10-14:00 and when you check out you lose your key the the 9 onsen bathhouses in Shibuonsen onsen. So we kind of had to get moving on out of town right at check out. I did really appreciate and the shuttle buses Suminoyu provided. They picked us up from Yudanaka station, took us to the monkey park (one way), and took us back to the train station when we checked out. That was very nice!

Verified reviewIts location and the view from the rooftop indoor/outdoor baths. Kind and helpful staff. More than enough dinner and breakfast. And free shuttle services from and to Yudanaka station on arrival and departure, and to the nearby snow monkey park. We were pleasantly surprised by the complementary espresso after breakfast!

Verified reviewThe village is small, so a quaint place to stay at the top end and very polite, welcoming staff. Upon arrival, we were provided slippers for inside the hotel and shown to our Japanese style room. Having the experience of sleeping on futons, eating Japanese food and wearing appropriate clothing (and not clogs), as well as experiencing close by Onsens, was a special experience. We got picked up from the train station by free shuttle minibus and also taken to the Snow Monkey park the next day. The food was served in a Japanese styled room and we sat on the floor eating a range of well prepared and different food, with service second to none.
There was no shower in our room, but no issues for one night with multiple Onsens very nearby.

Verified reviewAbsolutely loved our stay here. Our room was gorgeous and massive, with two beds and Tatami area. The baths upstairs were amazing, the authentic Japanese meals, dinner and breakfast were amazing and the presentation was 10/10 at the tatami tables. The staff were lovely and we loved the robes we were given, they thought of absolutely everything for us. The fact you have access to other baths too is great, can’t recommend this place enough!
Loved everything, only improvement would’ve been a shower or bath in the room, but wasn’t a big inconvenience at all to go upstairs.

Verified reviewThe staff is lovely, the service excellent, and the food delicious. We went off-season so it was very quiet and peaceful to stroll around the little town and visit the public onsen with the yukata and shoes provided by the ryokan. The best one was the bath in the hotel though. They also offer a free shuttle service for the station and monkey park as well. We felt pampered and well taken care of at all times.
All was great.

Verified reviewAt the top of the village Suminoyu has a great view from the rooftop bath. Dinner & breakfast were both excellent plentiful and served kindly by english speaking staff. Shibu onsen has retained an outdated charm and you can wander around in your yukata, while you try the various public onsen.
Rooftop onsen is a bit small and I was lucky to be there alone.
