Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NorwayI have no complaints at this time.
This is a traditional Ryokan which will give you a very good experience of how it's like to stay at a traditional Ryokan. The hosts were very nice and pleasant, they would always greet you when you entered or left the inn with a bow. The food was good, although I only tried the Japanese style food set and not the continental one they also offer. One thing I really enjoyed with this Ryokan was the bath, which is a traditional Japanese sento/onsen (sorry, I'm not quite sure of the difference) which is open until 11pm every day which is nice, so you can come back late and have a bath. The location of this Ryokan is fantastic, very close to most things you'd want to visit while in Kanazawa, being close to Kanazawa castle, Kenroku-en park, Omi Cho market, higashi chaya-gai, kazue machi Chaya and Asano river. Kanazawa station and Nagamachi district is only around 20-30 minutes away by foot. I would recommend anyone interested in staying at a Ryokan to stay at Sumiyoshiya.

GermanyA very nice traditional, simple ryokan in a historic building right in the heart of Kanazawa yet very quiet. The owner is lovely and made sure my room is ready for an early check-in even if I just asked to store my luggage. She speaks English well so no problems in communication.

AustraliaSome noise from cars outside the window but didn't bother us too much.
Lovely stay in a traditional ryokan. We didn't have meals at the ryokan but still received warm welcomes from the owner lady each time we left and came back to the ryokan. Room was very lovely with tatami mats and very comfy futon beds with hot tea to come back to each day. Onsens were so so good to help relieve our sore feet and bodies from all the walking. Thank you so much!

SwedenNot much to say here, though we are not very used to the harder Japanese beds. But that is part of booking a ryokan.
We get welcomed very friendly, the owners are incredibly attentive and caring. We also really liked the sento, the bath was always running hot. Our room was very spacious, and the whole ryokan is curated and clean. Lastly the breakfast was generous and it was no issue to accomodate me as a vegetarian.

United KingdomSumiyoshiya is a beautiful ryokan in the heart of Kanazawa. I would describe it as nearly perfect, the tatami mats are a touch thin however, so quite firm if you're a side sleeper. Overall, really good!

United StatesThe host at Sumiyoshiya Ryokan was very welcoming and helpful. We arrived before check-in, but she let us enter our room early. We unfortunately weren't able to have dinner at the Ryokan due to the chef developing a serious illness, but we were notified ahead of time about this and refunded the value of dinner. We hope that he recovers soon! Additionally, our host more than made up for this by providing us with excellent restaurant recommendations. The best sushi we had in Japan was at one of the restaurants she suggested. The traditional Japanese style breakfast was also quite delicious and substantial. We wished we could have stayed longer than 1 night and we will definitely try to stay here when we return to Kanazawa!

United KingdomThe hostess was very welcoming. The home cooked breakfast was delicious and it was a great experience to try such an elaborate traditional Japanese breakfast. The room was really big and the private bathroom was clean and comfortable. There was also a little common area to read and relax in, as well as a public bath. Yukata, slippers, etc are provided. I cannot recommend this place enough. It is a family-run business and the attention to detail is evident. There is a cozy atmosphere that you will only find in this type of inn. It was exactly what we needed after being out in the snow.

NetherlandsWe had the privilege of staying in this 300 years family run Kanazawa’s oldest Ryokan. Everything was extraordinary! We’re just thankful for their hospitality and smiling faces 🙏 I would come to Kanazawa just for this Ryokan. Do not miss the breakfast! Do not miss the onsen. Strongly recommended!
