Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

NetherlandsThe location wasn't near anything, but when visiting this area there is no one location that will be close to everything. I only used busses to navigate the area and was able to comfortably view all major attractions in Iya valley in a day.
The room was very spacious and had all the required amenities. The view from the onsen was amazing. A shuttle service from and to the nearest trains station is offered for free, which is a great way to compensate for the lack of transportation when the public bus is not driving around. The hotel restaurant was really great, especially in such a remote area it's really convenient to have a place to eat and the food itself exceeded all my expectations.

CanadaHad the roof of the building in the way of the mountain view from our balcony and bath, it ruined the view a little bit.
Our first experience with an outdoor bath and Japanese room and it was great ! Staff was really nice and helpful and the food was amazing !

United StatesIt was somewhat challenging to get to the free parking. We had a hard time getting the room air conditioner to work, even with using the translate apps on our phones. It was a little pricey.
The location was perfect for going to view kabuki. The free parking was appreciated, although it was somewhat hard to find. Food was tasty. We enjoyed the onsen.

AustraliaThe dinner was okay, but given that it was all packaged into the cost of the room, I can''t really complain and it was a nice bonus. The overuse of plastic is a little unnecessary I feel. There's so much disposable plastic being used for the cups, the remote control, the face towels.
The staff were really nice and welcoming. They explained things really well upon arrival. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and there was such a wide selection of dishes. You also get a nice view from the hotsprings.

IsraelWe booked a room with a private onsen and it was an amazing experience! The staff of the hotel were exceptionally nice, helpful and attentive. The location of the hotel is not that close to the attractions in Iya Valley with public transportation, but there are shuttle buses from the hotel to Oboke station and the opposite. We forgot something in the hotel after our check-out and the staff of the hotel drove all the way to Oboke station especially for us to bring it back. We really recommend this hotel to anyone who's coming to Iya Valley, and to anyone who's looking for a good private onsen experience with view to the mountains.

JapanDinner and breakfast were good. Staff were helpful and responsive. The location is a good spot from which to explore the Iya Valley. The rooms show some age, but given the economics of operating a hotel in a somewhat remote location like this, I thought that was understandable.

GermanyThe hotel is in a rural region, next to the Ōboke gorge. The interior is a little dated as well as certain amenities. We got a Japanese-style room with mattresses which have been rather hard compared to just only futons. The room was very spacious though. There’s no shower in the room, only the toilet and a sink. You can use the showers in the public onsen (divided by gender), though. The onsen is also a little older but the highlight of the stay. There’s a big bassin inside with hot water, a smaller one on the outside, a sauna and a cold water bassin. We booked the room with dinner, which has been an interesting experience but since it was local Kaiseki it wasn’t entirely to our taste - eating a whole fish with tail and head is a little unusual for the European stomach. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Women got to choose a colorful Yukata which you can wear throughout the house, even for dinner and breakfast. This was one of our more expensive stays in Japan, though. Considering the age and state of the hotel we had more comfort for less the price in other hotels.

United KingdomIt was all fab
The view from the room & the onsen was gorgeous. It was lovely to stay in a hotel with classic Japanese accommodation style. The kimonos were so comfortable & although we decided not to wear the full outfit as many guests did, we still felt accepted & welcome. I wish I could have eaten more of the evening meal which was a very traditional Japanese banquet. Fantastic spot for visiting the Iya Valley

United KingdomThere is no shower in the room itself, I can't remember if this was specified at the time of booking but it just seems a little odd for a hotel like this so one to be aware of. There are washing facilities in the onsen area. The decor in the room is a little dated and worse for wear.
Spacious room, dinner and breakfast included were both tasty.

NetherlandsWe knew we were booking a smoking room (all Japanese-style rooms here are smoking rooms) and were offered airing and deodorizing before our arrival, as we’re not smokers. I assume they did their best, but the smell from years of smoking guests was really ingrained in the room. You get used to it quickly, but honestly, we didn’t expect the smell to be quite so strong (both inside the room and hallway). The hotel is quite old—likely from the 80s—and could benefit from a thorough renovation.
We booked a Japanese-style room with a private hot tub on the balcony, and it was a great decision. We enjoyed a beautiful view of the forested mountains and the train bridge. The hotel offers excellent kaiseki-style dinners and an even better breakfast buffet—I recommend booking meals with your stay, as there are no restaurant options nearby. The room has only an outdoor shower next to the tub on the balcony, but there’s a nice onsen in the hotel, which is also tattoo-friendly. Overall, it was a wonderful two-night stay with only minor inconveniences.

This property is a bit on the older side but the staff’s hospitality and the exquisite views more than make up for that. The view from my room was absolutely out of this world. I still cannot believe the value - this place is a treasure!

FranceNot a big deal but the cigarette smoke in the corridor.
Loved the outdoor private bath. Our room was a smoking room (no others available for our stay) but we asked for it to be deodorised before our stay and it did not smell of cigarette smoke. There was just a slight odour in the corridor outside our room, as there were presumably smoking rooms nearby. Food was excellent and location perfect for exploring the Iya Valley area. There is a shuttle bus to the station but best to have a car (there is a big car park). Personnel were all lovely.

AustraliaAs it seems to be with most hotels/inns built in this era in Japan, the building turns its back to the stunning scenery as if to try and block it out from the inside as much as possible. The dinner service was a little disappointing, including the dining room atmosphere.
The onsen was fabulous. Very relaxing and refreshing. The room was washitsu and very comfortable.
