Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomHuge, beautiful, comfortable apartment. The staff & service was fantastic; very attentive. It’s expensive but the experience was fabulous. We were given traditional outfits to wear for the kaiseki style dinner in the room. The food was delicious & very plentiful. Breakfast was the same - so much food! The highlight was the private heated spa pool on the balcony. It was a lovely relaxing experience in the middle of a very busy tour of Japan - just what we needed!

ItalyThis SPA hotel is awesome. We loved the place, our room and the onsen. The staff was amazing, very very kind and helpful. They offered us a free shuttle service to the train station and they kindly provided us with an excellent vegetarian/vegan dinner and breakfast. Really nice place for relaxing and having a break. SingaporeNothing!
We chose this luxury traditional hotel to end our two-week trip in Japan. We were not disappointed. Our room included half board. The room itself is spacious with an outdoor Onsen facing the greens. We were treated like the kings the moment we arrived. The diner and breakfast were delicious and gastronomic. We enjoyed it so much!

Kana was AMAZING and made the stay so lovely! The room was incredible and the private tub was spectacular. I really loved the view of the temple from our room. It was also great to try the regional food. The presentation was beautiful. We enjoyed our authentic experience at this very traditional Japanese inn!

CanadaI liked everything about the ryokan. The only negative is that the actual town of Kagaonsen was not as charming as I hoped.
Our premium suite with open air bath was beautiful, spotlessly clean and spacious for four adults. We were picked up at Kagaonsen Station and taken to the ryokan. The service in this ryokan is impeccable and we just loved the woman who took care of us and served us our meals. Even though we spoke almost no Japanese and she spoke almost no English, we were able to understand each other and she was such a delight! Upon arrival the women in our group were asked to pick out yukatas and obis to wear. Clothing for the men are all the same and are provided in the room. Our luggage was taken up to our room for us and when we got to the room we were served matcha tea and a sweet snack. There is a booklet in the room in English outlining important things to know. We were asked what time we would like our dinner and our breakfast as well as what time we would take the shuttle back to Kagaonsen Station. While some of us used our private open air bath, I used the public bath which I had all to myself. They had an indoor bath and a beautiful outdoor bath. After getting dressed in our yukatas we made our way down to the lounge for the complimentary yuzu sherbert. Dinner was a beautifully presented multi-course meal served in our room and we could barely finish it all. Every night in the lounge, there is music and tonight was an accomplished pianist playing classical music. Our room had two twin beds so two of us slept on the tatami mats. Instead of using regular futons, they put down thick pads almost as thick as a regular mattress and I had a very comfortable sleep. The next morning, we walked around the town (there are complimentary bicycles you can borrow). Breakfast was another beautiful multi-course meal and we had a bit of time to take another bath before catching the complimentary shuttle back to Kagaonsen Station. All in all, a beautiful experience.

United KingdomVery ‘full-on’ experience, you need to be completely ready to let go and have someone in your personal space at all times. If you try to deviate from the plan there is plenty of resistance. Be ready to eat what you’re told at the time you’re told, in your bedroom - there is no restaurant. If you’re looking to be mothered and lose free will during your stay, it will be great. Going in summer may not be the best - no need for a hot spring when it’s 27 degrees at midnight.
A good sized room, clean facilities, nice area if you’re looking for a rural Japanese experience

United StatesI especially liked the Onsen both the private one in our room and shared one outdoor. The location across the street from a Buddhist garden path with shrines was one of the most magical sites I experienced in our 2 weeks in Japan - More serene and private than Kyoto. The meals were like a Michelin-starred experience. It is a full eversión into Japanese cuisine. But it was the Ryokan staff (Midori & Tomoko) that made this ryokan a memorable experience. We had never stayed in a ryokan before so they gently guided us through the proper etiquette and dressed us in yukatas for dinner which they provided. We traveled there with our adult children and this ryokan was one of our most memorable experiences.
