How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt was our first Ryokan experience. Very romantic location in the mountains. Free shuttle was much appreciated. We had a suite with private bath and in-room dining. Staff were so kind and helpful, and dinner/breakfast service was excellent. The server made a particular effort to explain each dish and how to eat it. The outdoor bath is particularly nice with overhanging maples.

Verified reviewVery great stay in the middle of nature. Amazing food. So nice staff and helpful. Nice hot spring. Well organized place and hotel arranged my transportation from Hemiji station to the hotel and back in the next day. Hotel staff look after the guest to take the specific requirements specially food restrictions.
Only a toilet in the room but if you need to take shower you have to use the public bath which is nice.

Verified reviewFabulous. So relaxing. We loved that it was old fashioned, not flashy and new. The staff were all so lovely. Shuttle bus is a great bonus. The meals were amazing. Really Japanese, glad few Westerners were there! We loved the family Onsen where we could go in as a couple.
If you are staying 2nights, there is no lunch. So only thing is to walk about 15 minutes to a Lawson market. Nice walk around some temples though, so made it worth the walk.

Verified reviewBeautiful traditional ryokan with a rich history, yet modern enough te be comfortable with all facilities you’d need. Staff was very friendly and proactive; we received an upgraded room and thet were very accommodating to my pregnant wife and my 1.5 year old daughter. Highly recommended.

Verified reviewExcellent all-around. The property itself is quaint, not overly fancy (especially in the hallways), but not dingy in any way. Not many facilities besides the baths, rooms, and restaurant, but it doesn’t quite need any, either. We brought our own entertainment from the outside, and if you don’t have any, you can just take the shuttle down into the city. Our stay included meals in our room. Breakfasts were Japanese style with many small dishes on one tray (including both western dishes like yogurt and eggs and Japanese dishes like fish and miso soup), and it was a nice, filling-but-not-too-full start to the day. Dinners were one night of kaiseki (various dishes brought out one-by-one), and one night of sukiyaki, and both were incredible in both presentation and taste. The staff member who helped us, Yoichiro-san, was wonderful company. In addition to excellent service, he was just a very chill guy, pleasant conversationalist and good sense of humor. I also suspect even if we didn’t speak Japanese he would have still been able to help us just fine. The rooms were spacious enough, just enough room for four futons to fit side-by-side, which was great for our group and would likely be even better for 3 or less people. The baths were refreshing; perfect temp and no more than a few minutes to get to each one. One indoor public bath (looks like it seats up to 8 or 9 without squishing), one outdoor public path of similar-ish size, and our room had a one-person private bath as well. The shuttle to and from the ryokan was very good for us; not having to deal with local bus lines and being able to get there easily was worth only having the one departure time in the morning/afternoon that we had to plan around. The yukata offered for us to wear in the ryokan were comfortable. The gowns came in sizes even the tallest and largest of us could wear. The obi belt didn’t have variable size, though, but that’s quite minor by comparison.

Verified reviewThe service was exceelent as was the food. The onsen in our room was amazing. Overall our stay was delightful and quite special! Thank you very much.
I think the only thing that could be improved is the red carpet in the hallways is quite worn and old.

Verified reviewFood was spectacular - all the courses were delicious. The Onsen was also very nice and well maintained. Also, the shuttles were very easy and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The outdoor onsen was closed Saturday morning - and the signs sharing that were only in Japanese so we were unable to use them.
