How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe had a blast staying here! The staff can speak fluent English and the ryokan was amazing. We had breakfast and dinner and it was really good too! Property was relatively close to snow monkey. I hope I can be back for the winter season soon! The private onsen was great too as you get to book it on the day itself. It was a great experience!

Verified reviewThe property was very cosy, it was a lovely experience to stay in an original ryokan, and have a quiet time in the onsen. The staff was extremely kind and friendly, and the location was just a short walk from the train station.

Verified reviewThe outdoor bath was very pleasant and it was nice that they allocated private time slots for each guest room. The room was fairly spacious and clean and resembled a Ryokan. The staff welcomed us well and were polite.
Our room had no towels or tying rope for the yukata (the traditional Japanese dress you are supposed to wear after showering and to breakfast). I tried to tell the hotel staff but the front desk was closed. I looked around the whole hotel and there was absolutely nothing I could use to dry myself, so after using the bath in the evening, we had to use the yukata to dry ourselves and go back to our room in the soaked yukata. We also couldn’t wear it to breakfast as it was wet. This was the most expensive hotel room we booked for our Japan trip, and unfortunately this experience tarnished our stay. In the morning at check out I explained the situation and they paid me ¥2000, I do wish they offered a slightly larger sum or another type of payment considering the hotel room was ¥24000 for two people.

Verified reviewWe loved that we could book a private onsen time each night. The Kaiseki dinner was beautiful and fabulous! Staff were so helpful and spoke excellent English. We stayed 3 nights to explore the area - snow monkey park, Obuse, Matsushiro and Matsumoto, and Togakushi. We had an amazing time in the area and were so happy to come “home” every night! It’s not fancy, but it’s lovely.

Verified reviewThe staff were super friendly and kind. We really loved meeting them and they went above and beyond for us. We had the chance to book a private session in the outdoor onsen which is beautiful and a lovely experience. The bedroom had everything you needed and a great authentic stay. We also had dinner and breakfast which was delicious and presented beautifully. Great location, close to the train station and buses to the snow monkeys. Thank you again and would highly recommend

Verified reviewAlthough I only stayed for one night, I can highly recommend this Ryokan. The lady at reception was very friendly and spoke good English. The room was spotlessly clean and the outdoor onsen was fabulous. I will return, but next time with the rest of the family. Thank you for your hospitality.

Verified reviewWe were looking for something traditional and this place delivered. As close to authentic as you can get. There was no western furniture and mod cons (except modern toilet). Everything else including showers and onsen was! The onsen is beautiful, perfect and better than accepted and really close to the snow money bus. Breakfast was 100% traditional we loved it!

Verified reviewThe staff are amazing and very helpful. The breakfast was so delicious and colourful.
The rooms are a little small compared to other Ryokans however it’s enough for solo travelers. The futons and pillow are quite hard and I woke up sore in the mornings

Verified reviewTraditional style and friendly staff. Nice onsen. Nice room and facilities. Cosy and very comfortable.
Had to go out for dinner as restaurant not available in the hotel that night. But none of the restaurants near by were open either. Luckily local supermarket nearby. I was looking forward to breakfast but booking.com did not pass this on to the hotel or it got lost via email and hotel not able to provide without advance notice. Which they did make very clear at time of booking. I was so looking forward to the breakfast experience at the hotel. The hotel gave me a banana to keep me going.
