Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Best hotel experience during our Japan trip. All was great, in a historic building (previously a school), fantastic location with bars and restaurants nearby, nice view from the room (the biggest during our Japan trip as well). So enjoyed the bar at the top floor offering outside sitting

QatarNot much to point out. Except for the fact that it you book late, you might be sucked out of the value for money oart. Some people may feel a bit out of place in a commercially active neighborhood. But that's a personal choice end of the day.
Probably the best location Kyoto can offer. We searched quite a bit and realised Pontocho was the best place to stay. And Gate just stamped our findings and lived up to all the expectations. A great building with some history. I learnt this was a school converted into a hotel :) A lot of space in and around as part of the property development. Central most to all great places to eat drink and hangout after a tiring day. Right in the heart of Kyoto's shopping prominent shopping district. Lovely breakfasts to kick off your day :)

This hotel truly excels in customer service. From check-in to check-out, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome immediately. The location is perfect for exploring, and our room was spotlessly clean. The real test of a hotel's service is how they handle problems, and they passed with flying colors. After I left, I realized I had forgotten some important items. I contacted the hotel, and they had already found them. They immediately arranged to post everything back to me without any hassle. Their efficiency and proactive approach saved me a lot of stress. Thank you so much to the entire team! I will definitely be staying here again.

United KingdomThis hotel was absolutely stunning. We had a wonderful view of the mountains directly from our room and the view from the hotel lobby is just wonderful. The hotel provide pyjamas which were so comfy. We loved them that much we bought a pair each to take home. The room was wonderful with a coffee machine and very spacious. The hotel provide free drinks and snacks in the evening and have an open fire that you can toast your own marshmallows on. It was a lovely touch. The breakfast was delicious. We tried the Japanese breakfast and there meat and fish was so generous on that. It was such a good value for money. Lots of western options and fresh orange juice being squeezed each morning by a lovely lady with a smile. The gym was well equipped and was a nice way to start our day. This hotel far surpasses that of a hyatt. The little details from Huloc are expectational. I am super impressed and just wish they had locations around the world. What a wonderful experience Kyoto was also epic. A wonderful place.

United StatesWe were pleasantly surprised by the happy hour that was available, including roasting marshmallows. Perhaps you can also offer chocolate and graham crackers to build s’mores!!!
We loved the breakfast! By the time we were seated at the restaurant, the limited Japanese meal was sold out. We wished we could have tried it. Maybe you’ll be able to offer more in the future.

DenmarkThe floors were not as clean as we would have liked, and the counter staff at the 8th floor were not very attentive as in our previous hotel in Tokyo, it was not bad, but I expected more from the hotel. The staff on the ground floor and at the breakfast area were great. Anyway, there was nothing wrong with the service, I just got spoiled from the previous hotel as the staff was on another level.
Breakfast is fantastic, specially the japanese option. The location is also great, very strategic for people discovering Kyoto on vacations. The room was great, very comfortable to get a nice rest, and a good bathtub for the evenings. The lounge was also nice to visit after our long days outside to grab a drink and relax a little before or after dinner.

Amazing!! Everything is perfect! Size of the room is huge. Location ideal. Very new, clean. Free beverages and sweets. Hotel invited Geisha san when we were in. We also could admire gozan- dai from the window of the lobby on the 8 floor. For me it is the ideal place in Kyoto. Thank you everyone from the hotel for our amazing stay.

CanadaThe only thing I can nitpick about is the fact that only french toast or eggs benedict are offered as your order during breakfast (in addition to a nice buffet to supplement breakfast). After 5 days of staying, just those two options became slightly monotonous, though both of them were very good (and the eggs in the bendict had the most orange yolks I've ever seen... happy hens, I guess). A trio or foursome of options for ordering would be better, especially considering the price of the hotel. Other than that, this was a pretty ideal stay. Will return.
Fantastic comfortable huge beds, really nice, large very comfortable rooms. Fantastic location next to Gionand Ponto-cho and just a really great well-run hotel. Breakfast was also very nice and the on-site restaurant was surprisingly great when we ate ther one evening. I'd say this is the nicest hotel I've stayed at in Japan to date (and will def stay in their hotel in Fukuoka when I am heading there.). I also love they provide free bikes if you reserve. We had a fantastic morning biking up the river and another evening ride along the opposite bank and direction which was just a really great experience. Also, decent fitness room with well-kept machines for exercising. Quite good for Japan. Will definitely be returning to the hotel.

GreeceThe breakfast was basic, and although we went there 40 minutes before closing, they were already out of Japanese breakfast. Also, some of the reception staff spoke English poorly, which made communication problematic (a general problem in Kyoto). Finally, there is no room service.
Excellent location, very comfortable room, and nice cafes and restaurants in the block where the hotel is located. Very clean and very friendly personel. Also, excellent view from the balcony. Relevant to price, it was top. Finally, an excellent treat was that we could book message therapists to come to our room for a refreshing 80-minute session at just 50€.

United StatesNot sure if this is a negative but something to consider - it was brutally hot outside, but the hotel had thick winter blankets in the room which would mean you have to crank up the AC to frigid levels or else you are constantly sweating under the thick comforter. I asked for a lighter blanket but they said they didn’t have anything, I got sick with this kind of drastic temperature shifts and not being used to keeping the AC this cold.
Excellent location, close to everything! Beautiful property, rooms are nice size and staff is amazing, especially at their restaurant where breakfast is served and at the bar on 8th floor. Everything is within 2 blocks walking distance and on a beautiful street, absolutely loved the location and service, highly recommend this hotel.

United KingdomNothing - I can’t fault it!
Perfectly situated in the heart of Kyoto. The hotel was perfect in every respect. We loved our room and everything you could possibly want was provided including lovely smelling bath products, hair brush and toothbrushes! The 8th floor bar had the most stunning views and we were treated to live music from a pianist and flautist who were amazing! Drinks and food were good and beautifully presented. The 3rd floor lounge was a lovely place to enjoy reading my book with a cup of tea! Absolutely my favourite hotel of my trip so far and we have stayed in several hotels!

CanadaWe really liked this hotel but two things that could have been improved is the booking and room selection process. We are a family of 4, our kids are 14/11 and the 11 year old was allowed in the room of course but the 3 single beds were not big enough. They allow for booking a room for 4 when including kids but I’d rather we had 4 beds or two queens. It was difficult to know which room would suit us because the under 12 factor allows to book something smaller than you wanted and it wasn’t clear there was no 4th sleeping arrangement like a cot or pull out. Also be careful of booking smoking rooms because they allow for that and my one daughter is fairly sensitive to smoke so if you are at all worried be cautious upon booking.
The gate hotel was very nice. From the free lounge area, to the top level bar, we found the facility really well appointed. The location is very close to many areas that are all walkable and close enough to train/subways that you can go anywhere you need. They also had onsite entertainment. This was in the form of a traditional Geisha show which was very cool and usually something you’d pay for so well worth your time to check it out if they have one while you stay. They also offer yoga on sat/sun for 1000 yen so it’s reasonable for a drop in.
