How guest reviews work

Verified reviewThe only real convenient thing about this place is it is a 30 second walk to the train station.
This place was so dirty, there was hair on the sheets, the plugs are a fire hazard, there was little to no storage, the bedroom downstairs has no curtains (albeit no privacy.. we were traveling with teenage boys), the bed space on the top wasn't even enough space to sit up, getting up and down the stairs to the top bed in it's self is a hazard, the walls were gibbed, not painted or anything. It was honestly a shock to the start of our holiday. We messaged when we had arrived at how shocked we are about the condition of this place (how unclean and how unsafe the place it) we were responded with thanks for letting us know we will pass on message to our cleaning team.. that wasn't the only problem. I took about 50 pics of the state of this place but can only upload 4. I think for the good money we paid for this place, we as a family expected much better from Japan.

Verified reviewThis location was AMAZING, right in the heart of Shimokitazawa, so close to the subway, grocery store, etc. The space itself was awesome, and our teenager said "this is the coolest place we've stayed in Japan yet", and we'd stayed at some pretty cool places. The design was great, the layout was perfect for parents with a teen. Loved the washer/dryer and clothes drying rack. The balcony was awesome. Just really perfect. We wished we had stayed in the area for longer... just tons of cools coffee shops, restaurants, vintage clothing stores, etc.
I can't really think of anything wrong with the place. It wasn't cheap, but it was pretty great.

Verified reviewPerfect spot – everything’s close by: shops, restaurants, supermarket, and the station all within walking distance. Mattresses were actually really decent too – comfortable and good quality. Would stay again.
A couple of small things – there was a bit of a smell coming from the shower, and the fridge door didn’t close properly on its own, so you had to push it shut each time. The place also felt a bit more dated than it looked in the photos.

The room needs urgent maintenance. The shower had so many permanent stains in the floor and it was nos super clean with many rusty areas. Stains all over the place, floor, sofa, walls and floor. I really believe the room could be cleaner and better maintained. Its would be a good idea to have blinders or curtains as the sun enters directly and its not easy to sleep from 5 am. I missed some tea and coffee and water.

Verified reviewThis is a spacious loft style apartment, fully equipped and in a superb location for experiencing the buzzy cool vibe of the Shimokitazawa area of Tokyo. It was perfect for our family of four adults. The beds were very comfortable, and it was simple to find and to check in. The hosts were good at communicating with us. Verified reviewReally great space. Extremely large for Tokyo accommodation, so we could really stretch out. I loved the little art touches around the accommodation. The location was also great, so close to the station and lots of excellent food options around, perfect base for wandering shimo-kitazawa.
The blinds are see- through. We found it difficult to sleep past 7am since the sun was very bright every morning (we stayed in late May). Darker blinds/curtains are needed. Be aware that the shower room is on the small side.

Verified reviewLocation! This location can't be beat. We've stayed in Shinjuku and Ueno before and from now on will come back to Shimokitazawa. Many restaurants and shopping right outside. Great for family with teens! Little kakimochi store and it brought back so much memories eating these snacks when I was younger. Great coffee shops too! AND steps away from the train stations and grocery store!
The room needs a major cleaning and redo. I understand the amount of traffic that comes through this place but a new paint job and carpet, maybe sofa without stains would be nice. Plus the shower needs a new head and deep cleaning (pink slime). It was very dusty above the bed, it was laid on thick, it was to visible not to notice. Also, because this was the last leg of our trip (coming from Sapporo and Otaru for 9 days) we had quite a few pieces of luggage therefore we hired a private transport. Both coming and going, our transport ran into trouble because at certain hours and weekends, they close some streets down for pedestrians only. Maybe it was our van size because I did see the regular taxis going in and out the streets. We had to walk a couple blocks with our luggage to the hotel, no biggie but just so you know.

Verified reviewVery comfortable apartment in an excellent location. The Shimokitazawa neighborhood is a smaller scale, vibrant place great for walking and with a variety of excellent dining and shopping places. Being close to the train station was perfect for quickly getting to other parts of Tokyo.
More towel racks in the bathroom would help for hanging things. One or two more cabinets in main area for placing things to keep organized, rather than keeping things in the suitcase on the floor. The place was super comfortable, but 601 could use a fresh coat of paint to brighten it up.

Verified reviewLocation was amazing, right in the middle of everything. Having a lift was great given it was 6th floor. The apartment itself had fantastic views, so close to the train, restaurants, shops you couldn't ask for a better location. The funky designs was right up our alley, very retro. Beds were comfortable, real pillows which are a rarity in Japan
I don't normally complain, but there were a couple of things to note : We chose the apartment because the pictures showed a record player and we are all into that, unfortunately it wasn't there in the room. There was no TV... We just assumed that there would be one. The safety rail across the the windows is dodgy, a small pressure on it, makes it move, so that is a bit unsettling when you are that high up. Please be careful if you have children in this room. When on the top beds, you look over to the shower area and there is clear glass in the bathroom door at the top, this means when you are drying yourself in the shower area the person on the top bed can see everything, so this made us feel uncomfortable. The accommodation says it is good for 6 people, however we were 6 males with luggage and it was a tight space. These are just things to note when travelling in a larger group, if we had less numbers it would not have been an issue.

The plastic wine glasses were terrible. The microwave was basic. A toaster oven would have helped. The fridge was tiny and in a difficult place to get into it. We did not realise that there was not a TV. All the other apartments on the website have one.

Verified reviewThe reason why I chose Shimokitazawa area was easy access to key spots in Tokyo and this property is very close from train station. You can do grocery shopping and hop in to a variety of restaurants nearby very easily. This was my 2nd experience staying in illi brand residence and the property was as awesome as the other property in Shimokitazawa.
If we had a grill in the kitchen, it couldn't be better.

No TV. Also - not the fault of the owners - but we endured a party from the room above for several hours one night.
