Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Spain-
Great choice for Takayama. Stayed there for one night and was very good. The hotel is nice, room has good size and is comfortable. They offer a private onsen for 2000 yen per person: totally worth it. Personel is nice and supportive. I totally recommend the hotel

United KingdomThe downstair bathroom and bedroom is connected, prefer to have solid wall or at least some blinds to separate the space.
Living room is absolutely amazing, bright, and spacious. The apartment is extremely well located near the shops, cafes, and restaurants. It's the highlight of our trip.

IrelandWe’d to arrange luggage transfer the night before we needed to because we were doing a tour the following morning and hotel staff wouldn’t be there to do the forms and accept the bags until later in the morning
Loved the tea lounge. The staff were lovely and when having tea they brought us some Japanese snacks. I loved the hard boiled sweets in the jar on the coffee table ! Location was superb. We emailed a week beforehand and they made restaurant reservations for us. Highly recommend

AustraliaThe only downside was that if you’re driving then your car is parked near the hotel which is about 1km away.
We stayed in the villa. It was perfectly located on the Miyagawa river. Very spacious and perfectly kitted out.

AustraliaRoom on 2nd floor accessible by narrow stairway only, although staff were very kind to help us carry our luggages up. A bit of a walk from the main shopping areas and train station, ok when the weather is good but less pleasant in the rain.
Cosy place, large rooms, helpful staff. Interesting experience sleeping on low mattress placed on a raised wooden platform. Fun to try the private bath.

SingaporeWould have been nice if there was free parking. The hotel staff did help us secure a paid parking spot near the hotel.
The main sitting area is spacious and comfortable. Onsen is lovely but you need to book it in advanced. The staff were helpful and friendly. Comfortable and quiet rooms.

Hong KongWe were happy to have stayed here during the Spring Festival. Our room was a Japanese style room with tatami flooring. The guest room was decent in size and comfortable. The oriental style dual roller shade in the room was a nice feature. The staff were attentive and friendly. It would be more than perfect if slippers could be provided in the vestibule and toilet area of the room.

United KingdomAs with several other hotels we stayed in, we found the duvets a bit hot to sleep under
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Machiya Hotel and would certainly recommend it. Location was great, an easy walk from the train station and a similar walk to the morning markets and the historic quarter. Takayama is pretty quiet after about 8:30 at night, so you need to have your restaurant arrangements sorted out. The hotel itself produced an excellent breakfast with three set choices which they asked us to choose the night before. There is also free flow tea and coffee in the dining room. Robust gin and tonics were produced for us one evening after a long walk on the Higashi Walking course, which hit the spot. We felt we had chosen well.

CanadaWe had to move rooms because people were stomping and running around so incredibly loud upstairs. The staff were very kind about it and asked us if we wanted to move, but we were woken up before 6am because of the noise. You also had to pay extra for onsen which wasn’t our experience at any other hotel, but it was nice that my husband and I could go together.
Great location that was close to the festival that was happening while we stayed here! The rooms were large and updated.

AustraliaWe didn’t know the home was a ten minute walk from the main reception/hotel and so instead of reserving the parking they had next to reception, we went to park nearby the Machiya home. Luckily there are a lot of parking lots close by but I think if the hotel chooses to have buildings far from reception, they should have designated parking spots for guests that are included in the stay and right where the homes are. Wasn’t a huge inconvenience for us and still really enjoyed the entire stay.
We stayed in the Hanare Machiya home. It was so spacious and comfortable. Since there was only two of us, we chose to sleep in the tatami room where the floor was heated and the beds were very comfortable to sleep on. I loved the large dining table and the balcony on the river. The large furo bath is so relaxing. Location was great, surrounded by so many shops and cafes.
