Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIf you are not very flexible and not used to sitting on the floor.... Hard to have a sit down to relax after a day of sight seeing. All the positives make up for this though. It's fine for a couple of nights stay and a reminder to get back to those yoga or tai chi classes☺️
Very peaceful in a serene part of Kyoto amongst the locals and close to various shrines and temples. Very clean and spacious in the town house. Felt like a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. We enjoyed the game of Go on the table too. Very aesthetic with a gorgeous wooden smell throughout. Lots of natural materials and fun to dress up in the traditional dressing gowns. Cute delivery and packing of beautifully presented breakfast boxes.

LuxembourgRyokan Tori in Kyoto was a phenomenal stay! The staff were incredibly helpful, offering warm hospitality and expert advice on where to go and what to see in Kyoto, making our trip truly memorable. The traditional tatami room was spotless, and the private Japanese-style bath was pure relaxation. The breakfast was a delicious showcase of fresh, local flavors. Perfectly located yet serene, Highly recommend Ryokan Tori! I’m already excited to return.

ItalyEverything is ok!
We found a warm and intimate atmosphere, where every detail is thoughtfully arranged with care and respect for tradition. A gentle sense of serenity embraces you, inviting you to enjoy every moment in this beautifully simple setting. The private tea ceremony is conducted with great skill, and breakfast is lovingly prepared. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

United KingdomThere were no aspects that we didn't like.
Our hosts were polite and friendly and spoke good English; which is important to us, as sadly our Japanese is limited to a few stock phrases. They advised on places to eat, alternative aspects to popular resorts, which proved invaluable and recommended some places to visit we had not considered. We were treated to private time in an onsen on each day of our 2 day stay and to a traditional tea ceremony. The breakfast was traditional and delicious (and in our case vegetarian which the hosts understood fully). Altogether a wonderful, peaceful and tranquil few days that recharged our batteries despite a busy schedule of visits and activities. Thoroughly recommended.

United StatesOur stay at Ryokan Tori was unforgettable and one of the true highlights of our time in Kyoto. We stayed in the annex, which was beautifully designed and incredibly comfortable for our group of 4. Every detail felt thoughtful and serene. The hosts were so kind and went out of their way to accommodate us, making us feel genuinely welcome and at home. One of the most special parts of our stay was the tea ceremony — intimate, authentic, and something that we’ll never forget. Ryokan Tori exceeded all our expectations, and we feel so lucky to have experienced it. We hope to be back one day!

United KingdomHonestly, one of the best stays on our entire trip in Japan. The people that run it were so lovely and kind. They offered a fantastic tea ceremony which was beautiful, and gave a bit of context and background to the history of the tea ceremony. The building ia beautiful and the futons were incredibly comfortable, my wife and I are still talking about the comfortable duvets too! We will definitely be going back!

United KingdomWe loved staying here and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto. It felt like a really special, traditional Japanese experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and you could tell they really wanted you to enjoy your time. The private Onsen was so relaxing, I could have fallen asleep! Followed by our Tea Ceremony which was amazing. It was so interesting and performed so meticulously. We liked that you could ask questions afterwards - it felt very traditional. The staff were also really helpful in forwarding our luggage to our next destination. We stayed for one night which was perfect.

NetherlandsOur stay ay the Ryokan was absolutely magical. We loved all the elements, so steeped in tradition. When you come, make sure you have plenty of time to enjoy the tea ceremony and the hot bath. (In fact, the tea ceremony here was MUCH better than the one we had booked in the old city center.) Could not recommend it more!

United StatesThe location is a little far from Gion (~30 min by public transit), but that also makes it easier to get to the northern areas of Kyoto (Kinkaku-ji, etc.)
We had a great experience at Ryokan Tori! The family was extremely welcoming and able to handle all of our requests (changes to breakfast timing, luggage delivery, etc.). Daily housekeeping was an unexpected plus, and the traditional breakfast served everyday was great. You really feel as though you're being hosted by a family - it's a lovely, authentic stay in Kyoto.

AustraliaWhile not an issue for us, this property is a little outside of Central Kyoto, so be prepared for an uber or taxi into the centre of town. However, it’s close to a lot of attractions in the northwest of Kyoto and we would recommend hiring a bike (offered by the Ryokan for a good rate) and exploring this area.
This Ryokan was an incredible experience - when we arrived we were treated to an incredible tea ceremony and hot bath in the private beautiful onsen style bath. The rooms were very comfortable and bigger than we expected. The owner sets out your futons while you are out for dinner, and prepares a delicious breakfast for you that differs each day. The owner was so warm and welcoming and we would definitely come back!
