Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

FranceIt's a bit old but we didn't mind too much as it was clean. I'd say it was quite expensive especially this being low season (early July, the village was absolutely dead, there were no restaurants open until minimum 30 min by car). I suppose the onsen explains the price but the whole building is quite old and the room wasn't particularly spacious for 4, and we also didn't have breakfast included, so the price was a bit off.
The onsen is great, the location is convenient too, to explore the Lake.

SingaporeThe hotel is old. But everything was still functioning. So it is alright.
Easy access to the Onsen. Futons for beds, young children can easily move around.

SingaporeBreakfast was given buffet style, but lack variety.
Rustic and traditional, but clean and comfortable. The futon mattress was just right and the blanket is very comfortable. The room given was very spacious, perfect for unwinding after a long hike.

AustraliaIt was rather dated and had a bit of a musty odour in the room. The pillow was very flat. There were very few dining options in the vicinity, as it seemed to be off season, between winter and summer so not much open.
Good location near the lake and convenient to drive to Oirase Gorge. Friendly staff. Good size room.

JapanI would love to see a few more options for breakfast. We stayed for three nights and the breakfast menu was always the same.
Some may find the location difficult to get to, especially during winter, but it’s worth the trek if you’re looking to be surrounded by nature with friendly staff, delicious dinners and a wonderful onsen.

AustraliaThe hotel offers onsens and good bathing facilities and products within the onsen showers and change rooms. It's a small town this hotel is located in, but I felt this hotel added to the experience. I'm not sure why a lot of people comment that it's run down, I think aside from the carpet, everything is looking pretty good, and the rooms were fine. There might be a few things here and there, but for the most part, nothing was impacted. I also noticed a few people comment that there isn't a lot of English speaking staff, which, while true, it doesn't make for a problem. It's a small rural town. Learn a few Japanese words or use google translate on your phone if you can. I had no issues at all.

SingaporeOverall experience was good; nothing to complain.
The Reception staff were friendly and helpful. The location of the ryokan was in extremely close proximity to Lake Towada which was our main target. And it was also very near the Lake Towada bus terminal which had bus services to Hirayu Onsen and Oirase. The ryokan, though bit old, was clean and well kept. Dinner on the first night was a big delicious spread of Japanese dishes, including crab claws! But self-service breakfast was a bit disappointing, not so much in variety of the food, but the venue and the way it was served, like eating in a canteen! A simple 3-course set breakfast would have been more welcomed.

AustraliaBreakfast choices weren't fantastic, especially compared to other places in Japan.
Older style Japanese hotel which has past it's heyday. But very clean. Our room was huge. The dinner was fantastic, and the onsen baths lovely. The staff were very helpful in telling us about buses to Oirase Stream, as we wanted to walk the stream. The hotel is very close to the lake and shrine.

NetherlandsThere's a noodle bar in the hotel where we ate. And although the food was tasty, no one cleaned the tables or seated us. In order to eat there, and there was no other open restaurant nearby, we had to remove all the leftover food and wipe a table ourselves.
The location was great. There's no city center as such at Lake Towadaso, but at least with this hotel there's a supermarket close by (walking distance) and you're at the Oirase Gorge within ten minutes (by car). The room itself, we had a Japanese style one, was fine. The onsen was really nice. It has an indoor and outdoor area and wasn't busy at the two times I went.
