Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaUnfortunately, you might need a car to travel freely. The bus schedule is not frequent.
It's an awesome house which was built with amazing Sugi wood. The host was really friendly and charming! I wish I could stay longer.

FranceNothing! Just know that walls are thin and there is some dust around but nothing bothering!
A cool stay on Kagoshima Island! Barbara was so nice to us, always smiling and helpful! It is beautiful traditional japanese house set in a quiet place next to a beach, there is no shops in the area though, so prepare accordingly. It is a lively place where everyone feels welcomed. Really recommend ! Thanks for having us!

CanadaSome cafes or restaurants near Isso and Shitoko areas are closed on Tuesday. We didn't know it, so we got some soba noodles at the Kanenaka-syoten (10 min walking distance) and cooked them at the hotel. Barbara-san gave us some green onions and handmade saba(machael)-miso. If you don't have the energy to go out for dinner, it might be a good idea to cook dinner at the hotel.
This is an interesting and fantastic property to stay in a Japanese traditional-style old house. Barbara-san was so kind, funny, and friendly, so my daughter wanted to be with her all the time and had a great time with her. My daughter wanted to see sea turtles, so Barbara-san took all the travellers to the port and threw fish heads into the ocean, but we couldn't see them because of the high waves. However, it was one of the great memories.

United StatesThe friendly staff, the friendly host, and the friendly guests made it much more enjoyable than any other places I’ve stayed in Japan. The house is an amazing very traditional Japanese home. I will be returning here next time I come back to Yakushima. It was a very memorable experience.

TaiwanI had a wonderful stay at this beautifully preserved 96-year-old Japanese-style house in Yakushima. The traditional atmosphere is incredibly charming, and you can truly feel the history and care that’s gone into maintaining the home. Everything was exceptionally clean and well-kept, making it both authentic and comfortable. Kimika was an amazing host—thoughtful, welcoming, and full of great energy. The decor in the house is very nice, and the view from the house is stunning as well. In the common room, Kimika also thoughtfully provided delicious local coffee and tea from Yakushima, which added an extra touch of warmth and hospitality. The kitchen also has everything you need. The house is very close to Isso beach, which is a great place to see the sunset. This is the perfect place to unwind and connect with the beauty of Yakushima, and also connect with the locals. I highly recommend staying here if you’re looking for a unique and memorable experience on this magical island.

United KingdomNothing negative to report, the shared bathrooms are clean and well set up, there are insects in the house but not a problem for us. It's true there are no restaurants nearby but again, so easy to get to Miyanoura.
The 100 year old cedar house is beautiful and smells amazing. Baba and Miho create a really welcoming atmosphere and spend time getting to know the guests and recommending restaurants and stuff to see on the island. Baba gave us a Japanese calligraphy lesson (she's an artist that specialises in calligraphy) and Miho is a dancer who performed at a local festival that she invited us to, unfortunately we got lost and ended up arriving late so we missed her performance. The whole experience was amazing, can't recommend this place enough. Despite comments on the location being far from hikes, we found it to be great, proximity to Isso beach is a huge bonus, peaceful area and so easy to get to Miyanoura and the Shiratani hike, although we had a car, which we highly recommend as we spent a day driving the circumference of the island and stopping a lots of cool spots.

JapanThe staff was so friendly (We loved meeting baba and appreciated her calligraphy so much!). The location was very convenient, and there was snorkeling gear available to borrow. There was a beach 2 min drive away that Baba told us to go to for snorkeling and we saw a turtle, octopus, and so much! The futon was very comfortable and shared kitchen was very clean and convenient. Baba also invited us over for a wine party which we were sad to miss it. Overall this stay was a highlight of our Yakushima trip. Thank you so much baba for a memorable space!

IrelandAgain, as others have said, the buses are very infrequent so it's tricky for those who haven't rented a car. Next time I come, I will bring an international driver's licence so I can rent.
Barbara was so kind and friendly and helpful. Her house is so beautiful and in a lovely location, a short walk to the beach and a bus stop. As others have said, it's a sort of communal living guesthouse which feels like you're living with housemates. I met some lovely people while staying there and we cooked and ate together. I would recommend this place to anyone coming to Yakushima, particularly those with a car.

PolandThe ceiling rafters are a bit low, so you have to be careful if you're tall. The toilets have a very low ceiling, and the middle toilet is downright claustrophobic, but the other ones are okay. And the host isn't joking when she warns you about the spiders- you will meet them, including big ones, especially downstairs in the laundry and bathroom, and you need to be okay with them. But those issues do nothing to change the fact that the place is amazing.
The location was amazing. Isso is a beautiful village with an amazing beach with a coral reef a 15 minutes walk away from the house, great for snorkeling. The house was beautiful and had a great atmosphere, exactly as you can see in the pictures, and the host was incredibly welcoming and helpful. The rooms were spacious, the AC worked great, and the sleeping was very comfortable. The sink in the room was a nice touch. There were many maps and guides to help plan trips around Yakushima, the common spaces (kitchen, living room, and the bathrooms) were nice and pleasant, and the host worked hard to make them welcoming. We had some nice chats and common meals with other guests. Overall, the place is amazing, and I will recommend it, and Yakushima in general, to everyone I know.

FranceI wasn't expecting such a nice place, this traditional inn is amazing and very respectful of its original construction. It's a great place to meet people in a welcoming setting, and the host is one of the kindest and liveliest I've ever met. Yakushima was my best destination in Kyushu, the hiking routes are breathtaking, so if you plan to come, don't consider a period too short if you want to enjoy the various activities. I highly recommend Yakusugirou Shichifuku !

Barbara was the best and most friendly host, she went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. She creates a space where everyone feels welcome and encourages conversation between guests. The house itself is beautiful, with large comfortable rooms, a communal living room and kitchen. The views are beautiful and it’s right next to one of the best snorkelling beaches on the island! Barbara was also kind enough to lend us some snorkels. I wish we could have stayed longer and I hope to come back again!

PortugalThe accommodation and staff were great! As a disclaimer: It is a very old gorgeous traditional house that is shared with all other guests, so it is not quiet and there are plenty of bugs around :) About the location (May 2025): the bus comes a few times a day and costs about 530JP¥ for a 15min ride to Miyanoura; there are no restaurants or supermarkets around.
The house is super cozy and we slept really well; it's close to the beach and bus stop; the area is super quiet. The host proactive shared clear information in English.

SwedenWe had an amazing stay in this guesthouse. Barbara & Lee are the best hosts ever. Very kind, fun and welcoming. The other guests that we shared the house with were also great. And the house is beautiful! If you consider booking, keep in mind that you really do share the space with the other guests. Sound travels very easily in this house and people might be up chatting til 11pm. However if you are looking for a social experience and don't mind some noise at times, it's well worth it! The people we stayed with were respectful and kind and I hope all future guests will be as well. I recommend renting a car for this stay (A car is also great for Yakushima over all)

IsraelIt's not about not liking, just a matter of setting expectations. It's a hostel, bathrooms and shower are shared, but very clean. The walls between the rooms are exceptionally thin, so don't expect privacy
Baba is an exceptional host, fluent in English and fun to talk with and help with everything you need. The place has a unique vibe, encouraging interaction between guests and a nice place to hang
