How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewOn our trip to Kyoto I wanted to book a traditional accommodation as a contrast to modern hotels. Yado (Village) Karimachi was in a great location close to shops, restaurants and transport and provided an individual unit as opposed to just a bedroom. We booked 2 units; one for my husband and I which had 2 room spaces on both floors, plus 2 bathrooms, one with an outside bath tub. And one for my 2 teenagers that was laid out the same, but the staff set up one futon upstairs for my son, and one downstairs for my daughter so they both had their own space and bathroom, which worked well for us. The staff were extremely nice and accommodating, and nothing was too much trouble. The showers were excellent with good water pressure!
The stairs in the units are extremely steep and tricky to navigate. This wasn't a problem for us but means the accommodation isn't accessible for people with limited mobility. We were worried about marking the tatami mats in the rooms as they were so pristine!

Verified reviewStaying at this ryokan was truly one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. Everything was exceptionally clean and thoughtfully prepared. I felt as if I had stepped into a different era, surrounded by the beauty of traditional Japanese culture—it was such a special and unforgettable experience. The staff and managers were incredibly polite and helpful, always going above and beyond to make us feel welcome. If I didn’t have such a packed travel schedule, I would have gladly stayed longer—this place alone is worth coming to Japan for. The futons were surprisingly comfortable, and the outdoor bath was such a thoughtful and relaxing touch. We were genuinely very pleased with our stay. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality! 本当にありがとうございました。

Verified reviewIt felt like we were taken back in time and we got to experience traditional Japanese housing. A concept that combines nature with interior as much as possible, making you feel grounded, which is unique in today’s world. The staff was incredibly nice and assisted us with everything, including having an English speaking person assist us.
There is nothing bad to say about this place.

Verified reviewAn authentic Japanese ryokan experience with exceptional hospitality. There is a bus stop on the doorstep of the hotel which was very useful for commuting in the summer heat.
The rooms are designed on two levels with a steep and narrow staircase. We left our suitcases downstairs as it would have been impossible to get them upstairs. The alley leading to the hotel is seems a bit dodgey but once you enter the hotel the atmosphere is serene.

Verified reviewExceeded our expectations. Loved the outdoor onsen and shower. The most helpful and understanding staff ever, will do everything they can to ensure you have a comfortable stay! The ryokan is located just 2 mins walk to Kyoto town and quick walk to Gion district too. We saw lots of geishas walking around and even at restaurants around this ryokan. Lovely izakaya just around the corner with the friendliest man cooking the best food!

Verified reviewOne of my favorite places to stay ever! This cozy little ryokan is tucked away on what feels like a private street, but close enough that we could easily walk to get food, snacks, and shopping. The customer service is above and beyond- the best I have ever experienced in all of my travels. It felt like every member of the staff we interacted with genuinely cared about our comfort during our stay. Our room was spacious, super clean, and so comfortable, with an awesome private outdoor shower and bathtub. We even got laundry service and a delicious breakfast delivered to our room one morning and everything was wonderful. My husband forgot his credit card in the room and the staff called right away to let me know and even had it shipped to our next location. I was sad to leave and would absolutely stay here again if I am ever back in Kyoto. Highly recommend! Thank you so much!
Nothing! Everything was wonderful!
