Excellent location, super convenient to explore Kyoto. Staff were very attentive and helpful. The room was elegantly decorated with a calm Kyoto touch. The vegetarian breakfast arranged by the hotel was a delightful surprise – authentic, healthy, and perfectly in style with the city.

On our trip to Kyoto I wanted to book a traditional accommodation as a contrast to modern hotels. Yado (Village) Karimachi was in a great location close to shops, restaurants and transport and provided an individual unit as opposed to just a bedroom. We booked 2 units; one for my husband and I which had 2 room spaces on both floors, plus 2 bathrooms, one with an outside bath tub. And one for my 2 teenagers that was laid out the same, but the staff set up one futon upstairs for my son, and one downstairs for my daughter so they both had their own space and bathroom, which worked well for us. The staff were extremely nice and accommodating, and nothing was too much trouble. The showers were excellent with good water pressure!

The stairs in the units are extremely steep and tricky to navigate. This wasn't a problem for us but means the accommodation isn't accessible for people with limited mobility. We were worried about marking the tatami mats in the rooms as they were so pristine!

Staying at this ryokan was truly one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. Everything was exceptionally clean and thoughtfully prepared. I felt as if I had stepped into a different era, surrounded by the beauty of traditional Japanese culture—it was such a special and unforgettable experience. The staff and managers were incredibly polite and helpful, always going above and beyond to make us feel welcome. If I didn’t have such a packed travel schedule, I would have gladly stayed longer—this place alone is worth coming to Japan for. The futons were surprisingly comfortable, and the outdoor bath was such a thoughtful and relaxing touch. We were genuinely very pleased with our stay. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality! 本当にありがとうございました。

Everything about this property was 'excellent'. I would not hesitate to recommend it. If you are looking for an authentic Japanese accommodation, with all the amenities, that is clean, spacious and excellent service and attendance to your needs, then request a room and enjoy the true and welcoming experience of a historic Kyoto ryokan.

It felt like we were taken back in time and we got to experience traditional Japanese housing. A concept that combines nature with interior as much as possible, making you feel grounded, which is unique in today’s world. The staff was incredibly nice and assisted us with everything, including having an English speaking person assist us.

There is nothing bad to say about this place.

An authentic Japanese ryokan experience with exceptional hospitality. There is a bus stop on the doorstep of the hotel which was very useful for commuting in the summer heat.

The rooms are designed on two levels with a steep and narrow staircase. We left our suitcases downstairs as it would have been impossible to get them upstairs. The alley leading to the hotel is seems a bit dodgey but once you enter the hotel the atmosphere is serene.

Exceeded our expectations. Loved the outdoor onsen and shower. The most helpful and understanding staff ever, will do everything they can to ensure you have a comfortable stay! The ryokan is located just 2 mins walk to Kyoto town and quick walk to Gion district too. We saw lots of geishas walking around and even at restaurants around this ryokan. Lovely izakaya just around the corner with the friendliest man cooking the best food!

This hotel is one of the most peaceful places to stay right in the middle of the busy city. The service is amazing, and everything meets a really good Japanese standard.

One of my favorite places to stay ever! This cozy little ryokan is tucked away on what feels like a private street, but close enough that we could easily walk to get food, snacks, and shopping. The customer service is above and beyond- the best I have ever experienced in all of my travels. It felt like every member of the staff we interacted with genuinely cared about our comfort during our stay. Our room was spacious, super clean, and so comfortable, with an awesome private outdoor shower and bathtub. We even got laundry service and a delicious breakfast delivered to our room one morning and everything was wonderful. My husband forgot his credit card in the room and the staff called right away to let me know and even had it shipped to our next location. I was sad to leave and would absolutely stay here again if I am ever back in Kyoto. Highly recommend! Thank you so much!

    Nothing! Everything was wonderful!
