Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomA beautiful hotel and experience staying in the Japanese style room. The staff are so lovely and helpful and everything is so spotlessly clean. We loved the onsen experience - the large ones in particular is very beautiful - and they switch every day so men and women will get a chance to experience both even if staying for a night. The tatami beds were very comfortable. Would highly recommend - we walked to Gion and the temples and it's in a great location.

This inn exceeded my expectations. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. Very welcoming. The inn is also extremely clean and provided a Japanese style room and onsen. Overall, would definitely recommend this place to anyone staying in Kyoto. The location is also a plus point as it is walkable distance to Kyoto Station.

My favorite stay in Japan. I spent my last night on Kyoto there to try a traditional stay. Room was great. I chose a Japanese-style room and the futon was super comfy and traditional chair and desk were such a nice touch. The manager, forgive me for forgetting your name, was amazing. She made sure everything was top notch and knowing that I don’t prefer public onsen, she provided me the key to a private one insisting I try it and it was amazing. The location is great and there is a bike rental shop right next to it which was really cool. I also booked the dinner and it was DELICIOUS! I could barely finish all the courses. They also provided with with a really cute Yakuta. Highly recommended. Great place, people, hospitality, cleanliness and location. You can take the bus, which is like a 10 minute walk, to Gion.

AustraliaThe staff made our stay feel so warm and welcoming that we didn’t want to leave. The room was cozy, and the onsen was fantastic. We especially loved the little treats they’d leave for us to sample. We couldn’t have picked a better place, thank you for making our stay one we’ll never forget :)

United StatesNothing we can think of. Everything was so thoughtful and designed for guest happiness and comfort.
The staff was the most hospitable, friendly, wonderful. Those who didn’t speak English carried translators so we were able to converse with them all. The place was immaculate, had awesome public baths, and was in a great location. The food was beautifully set, generous and delicious.

United StatesThere are literally no complaints whatsoever.
The staff was so welcoming and accommodating. The meals they offered were amazingly delicious and authentic. I wanted to find a couple specific things in the Kyoto area and they were able to help me find them (an onsen and some hamachi kama)! I will absolutely be returning the next time I visit Kyoto.

BrazilThe people from the Ryokan were so nice with us. And the dinner + breakfast were delicious! It was totally worth it and there was a lot of food! I recommend if you are going to eat the dinner, to not eat anything some hours before. Because the dinner is well served!

United StatesMy family of six had a wonderful experience staying at Yamadaya Ryokan. Fantastic staff, food, hospitality, and location. The rooms were clean with a wonderful traditional Ryokan feel right across the street from the temple in Kyoto. They had three baths available: one private available for reservation and two that rotate daily for each gender. We cannot recommend staying here enough.

United KingdomI stayed at Yamadaya Ryokan in late March 2025 during my trip to Kyoto, and it was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my journey. The location was excellent, making it easy to explore the city while still offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcome and provided an authentic ryokan experience. My room was simply magnificent, with beautiful traditional elements like tatami flooring and a comfortable futon, creating a perfect balance of comfort and tradition. One of the standout moments of my stay was the kaiseki dinner. The attention to detail and passion of the staff were evident in every dish, making it a truly unforgettable dining experience. The onsen with a garden view was absolutely breathtaking. I had heard about the Japanese onsen culture before, but experiencing it firsthand was something else. After soaking in the warm waters, I felt completely refreshed and rejuvenated. I highly recommend Yamadaya Ryokan to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese ryokan experience. If you're visiting Kyoto and want to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese hospitality, this is the place to be!

SpainThis is a particular point and probably it is not the fault of the ryokan itself. Just out our window there was something like a generator or an engine that makes noise the whole night, making difficult to properly sleep.
Friendly staff. The old woman was so warm with us. Nice traditional japanese room. The onsen is so cute, though it is different for men and women (they change every day the bath gender to enjoy both).
