How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified review12 ou of 10. Extremely nice and thoughtful staff. Very poetic and sophisticated in all the details. A really great experience. The kaiseki dinner was very delicate. Worth a Michelin star ^^ A lot of nice spaces to chill, and a beautiful tatami room.

Thank you very much for choosing to stay at our ryokan. We are truly delighted to hear that you enjoyed the experience of staying in a traditional Japanese-style inn. Unlike the city, our remote mountain village offers little besides nature and few changes—but precisely because of that, the timeless essence of Japan still lingers here. We are also deeply grateful for your kind recommendation in your comment.

Verified reviewWe had a truly relaxing stay at this beautiful ryokan in Takayama. Our spacious room with private onsen on the 3rd floor overlooked a peaceful river — a lovely view to wake up to. The amenity kit was well-prepared and thoughtful. The onsen water was crystal clear, with a gentle warmth and cleansing feel that left us feeling completely rejuvenated. The peaceful atmosphere, paired with two massage chairs in the lounge area, made it perfect for winding down. The staff were genuinely friendly and went the extra mile to accommodate our dietary needs. A special highlight was the owner personally greeting us and even taking a photo together — a really heartwarming gesture that made us feel at home. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to enjoy the slower pace and calm beauty of the Japanese countryside.
Not that easy to find the parking space. May need to put a bigger signage in english.
Thank you very much for choosing to stay at our inn in Hida Furukawa, a sister town of Takayama. While hotel-style accommodations have become mainstream even in Japan, our establishment continues to welcome guests in the traditional ryokan style, offering hospitality rooted in old customs. We are truly grateful that you enjoyed the atmosphere and culture of Japan’s countryside. Our inn is nestled within the winding alleyways of an old townscape, and since the parking area is located behind the lodging building, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. To preserve the historical scenery, installing large signage is difficult, but we will explore possible improvements to make access easier. Should the opportunity arise again, we hope you will return and feel as though you are coming home to your house in Japan.

Thank you very much for choosing our inn as one of your accommodations during your trip to Japan with your three friends. Though we are a humble country inn nestled in an old-fashioned townscape with little in the way of modern attractions, we are truly delighted that you were able to enjoy a simple and authentic Japanese experience, different from that of Tokyo or Kyoto. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you back the next time you visit Japan.

It brings us great joy that you could savor a slower pace of life, so different from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Verified reviewAbsolutely incredible place to stay, every detail is perfect. The location, the view, the staff, the food. The sukiyaki with the upgraded wagyu was the best meal I've ever had in my life. The staff are so kind and took such good care of us, sharing lots of Japanese culture with us as well. We had a room with a hot tub and view of the temple, and it was just perfect. Such a beautiful town to stay in as well. We will definitely be back.
That we couldn't stay longer 😭
Thank you very much for the opportunity to welcome you. We are deeply honored and sincerely grateful for your most generous compliments—it truly brings joy to us as innkeepers. We are delighted to hear that you fully enjoyed your stay in our quiet countryside town. As your visit was for two nights, we served kaiseki cuisine on the first evening and a sukiyaki-style kaiseki on the second. The local Hida beef is recognized alongside Kobe beef and Matsusaka beef as one of the top-ranked varieties of wagyu. If you ever have the chance to travel to Japan at a more leisurely pace, we hope you will stay with us again and take all the time you desire to unwind.

Thank you very much for staying at our ryokan. We are truly honored to receive such high praise, which serves as great encouragement and motivation for all our staff. For guests who may find the traditional Japanese futon slightly firm, we offer options such as layering futons or providing additional mattresses. Should you visit us again, we would be delighted to accommodate these requests.

Verified reviewUpon our arrival, everyone was hospitable and friendly. The service was seamless. The room that we stayed in is called the Seika Room. The view was very peaceful and beautiful. We could hear the water flowing from the Araki river from our room when we opened the windows. The suite we booked was very spacious. The bathroom with the private bathtub and continuous hot water from the natural springs was the highlight of our relaxing visit. The dinner and breakfast were simply lovely!! Using local ingredients from the area. Cannot wait to be back.
n/a, the staff was very hospitable and accommodating.
Thank you very much for staying at our ryokan. We are delighted to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your time in the "Seika no Ma" suite. The "Seika no Ma" is the only suite in our ryokan featuring an exclusive foot bath area as well as a private open-air bath. The suite overlooks the soothing babble of the Araki River, beautifully harmonizing with the ryokan's garden and the grand temple on the opposite bank. During the blooming season (typically mid-April), guests can enjoy the magnificent cherry blossoms right in front of the room, all to themselves. Please do not hesitate to contact us again when you plan your next trip to Japan. We look forward to welcoming you back with heartfelt hospitality.

Verified reviewEverything! The level of care and details starts as soon as you arrive at the door and never stops until you leave. We had the most attentive staff throughout our 2 nights stay. The same person checked us in, showed us around the beautiful amazing hotel and its facilities and served us the most delicate dinner on both nights. The rooms were the most spacious we ever experienced in Japan (like as big as our entire flat in Canada) and clearly highlighted the hundred years old history of the building with great subtle renovations making it the most comfortable stay possible (e.g. double glazing windows, brand new bathroom and toilets, etc.). Even the owner came and chatted with us on our first dinner. I could go on and on about everything that was right about this ryokan, just go and experience it for yourself.
Absolutely nothing.
Thank you very much for staying at our ryokan for two nights. We are deeply honored by your highest compliments, which bring us immense joy and encouragement for the future. While many Japanese-style inns today operate without a resident owner (Okami), at our ryokan, three generations of Okami continue to welcome our guests. We are committed to preserving the traditional Japanese heritage, including the building itself, while continually improving it and innovating our hospitality to ensure a comfortable experience for everyone. We hope you will consider visiting us again in the future.

Verified reviewIt’s a beautiful, traditional Japanese inn with the most beautiful views of the Honkoji temple, in a quaint village. The inn has been beautifully preserved, it has a great gift shop and plenty of communal spaces.
Thank you very much for choosing to stay at our ryokan. We are deeply honoured by your generous compliments. It brings us great joy to know you enjoyed the view of the large temple on the opposite riverbank, appreciating the Japanese concept of 'borrowed scenery.' While preserving the historic building passed down through generations, we have also taken thoughtful steps to ensure a comfortable experience in our shared spaces. Someday, I hope to stay at a 'manor house' in your country to learn and gain inspiration.
