How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewA pretty and spacious location, convenient to everything in the Kuju/Aso area. The reserved hot spring was very pleasant. The rooms were very quiet and spacious with all amenities, including good wifi. Hosts are friendly and the food was good and filling. The stay really revolves around taking the meals. Cool in summer.
The house is aging a bit, as are the furnishings, although that gives it a type of retro charm. Managers were a bit too aggressive about time -- moving all dinner courses very quickly and hovering a lot, often interrrupting our private conversations. Check out is set at 10:00 but they told us to be out at 9:45 to be sure, and at 9:41, the manager was outside my room calling me to vacate. Interpreted my request for no seafood as me not wanting to eat sashimi - consequently shrimp and squid were included in one of the dishes.

Verified reviewFriendly and informative host. The hotel is located in Kuju mountains far away from shops and restaurants, a car is must. Location is great for visiting the surrounding nature attractions. Breakfast was excellent as was the private onsen. Room was very big for japanese hotel.
A bit dated rooms, slow wifi. It was cloudy / rain on both nights so no stargazing.

Verified reviewThe husband and wife team running this property is amazing. Their breakfast was prepared and served with pride, and attention to detail. I love the little touches in their tea room. A piano, shelves of books and interesting paraphernalia all contribute to a wonderful homey British countryside vibe. The vast space outside the property includes a hammock and an observatory. The owner is happy to bring you to explore the stars at 8pm there. Our teens had great fun there. We are an entourage of 7 including an elderly who ocassionally uses the wheelchair. We didnt find it hard to get around the property. We love the space of the bedrooms and the privacy of this whole compound. Also love the private onsen where you had to walk just 2 min out(still within the compounds) and you have the whole place to yourself for 50 minutes i think? It was basic but comforting. Just the thing to unwind to after a long day driving around. Booking required. Please note the dinner has to be booked 2 days in advance. We forgot about it and regretted since the breakfast was so yummy.

Verified reviewI echo other reviews. The Host couple was very hospitable and obviously take great pride in this place and providing excellent service and meals. The room was very large and comfortable. Setting was very peaceful and we enjoyed the onsens after dinner. Unfortunately it was cloudy so we didn’t get to use the telescope. Make sure you are accurate with your arrival time and punctual for dinner. The dinner is many courses so needs to be prepared well in advance. They take great care in preparation and serving the dinner so being punctual is the courteous thing to do. Allow extra time as google maps seemed to provide very optimistic drive times in the area.

Verified reviewThe hosts, The food, The comfortable bed The cleanliness
The dust under the bed. Most of the restaurants around the area close at 5pm, so better book their dinner or drive about 20 mins to a nearby town to look for food.

Verified reviewThe observatory star viewing at night and the meals. The owner/caretaker are extremely friendly and welcoming. The location is a quick drive amidst many other lodging options. What stood out were the hospitality, the meals and the unique observatory viewing. It is a real gem amidst other standard hotels around the area. There was even a hot plate meal and his macaroni and cheese creation which was extremely delightful.
The carpark to the room was a short walk away. Recommend that you check in first (without luggage) then make your way to collect them. The place has 2 sides. I stayed at the side with the single level which was a short walk away and nearer to the onsen.

Verified reviewIt's in a very quiet location surrounded by trees. The four couse dinner was very tasty with great presentations. After dinner, the host was kind enough to show us the stars from his observatory. It was a lifetime experience to see Jupiter and Saturn from the telescope. Breakfast was very nice as well. The hosts prepared for us earlier than usual by our request. We are very much appreciated!

Verified reviewThe accommodation is run by a very kind and caring couple. They are very interested and care about their guests. During the evening we had an amazing 4 course dinner and in the morning an amazing breakfast. Also, we could make use of the private onsen during the evening and watched Jupiter and the moon in the observatory which was both very special. When there was snow during breakfast, the owner took care of us by checking the road conditions and help us deciding the route. Thank you very much for the truly wonderful and perfect stay. We enjoyed it very much.
