How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe host and staff were very friendly and efficient. The location was exceptional. The food was great. The host drove our luggage to the bus stop.
The early check out time but then that is standard for Japan. No complaints with the service. The common bathroom but then again that is not unusual for Ryokans either. No significant complaints.

Verified reviewThe owners of the ryokan were really friendly, generous and incredibly accommodating. The breakfasts and dinners were fabulous. It's in a quiet neighborhood high up in the mountains above Nagano, with great views of the mountains from walks around the neighborhood. It's practically next door to a wonderful shrine with walks in the woods. We had a large room with an adjoining room in this lovely old ryokan.
The room, or perhaps the pillows, were a bit musty, and I had a reaction which made it hard to breathe the first night I was there. I didn't realize when we booked the place just how far it was from Nagano. There is a bus from town if you don't have a car, but it's a long, expensive cab ride. I would still recommend this place to anyone.

Verified reviewBeautiful Ryokan in a beautiful part of Tokagushi. I requested strict vegetarian meal and I got delicious food both mornings and evenings. Suprisingly I slept rather well on the futon.
For westerners it can be tough to stay in the room without sitting on a comfy chair. The staff speaks little English although using basic Japanese I managed to communicate without any real problem.

Verified reviewVery traditional old Japanese house, lovely flower arrangements everywhere, owner let me graciously check-in early, homestyle cooking, good portion sizes
Wake-up call. If they want people to have breakfast during a specific time frame they should let them pick a fixed time slot beforehand and not just say 'breakfast is from seven'.

Verified reviewThis is such a special place. A 150 year old Ryokan perfectly located next to the Middle Shrine. Run by a lovely family who do everything to make you feel welcome. Dinner and breakfast were exquisite! And they catered for one of our party who does not eat seafood. Staying at this Yokokura Ryokan is one of the highlights of our trip.
Nothing, I wouldn't change a thing.

Verified reviewAn experience to stay in a 150 years old Japanese house.
The shared bathroom could be cleaner and needs upgrading.

Verified reviewInexpensive. Nice hot bath. Close to the Mirror Lake and the temples of Togakushi.
It would be better if the Booking.com site offered the chance to book an evening meal and breakfast. The hotel staff do not always ask. Outside the hotel, food is only available up to 17:00, but this place is good and is open to 18:00 : https://maps.app.goo.gl/yECtS2xakZWffsxk8.

Very small bathroom, but that's probably typical for this kind of house.

Verified reviewBreakfast was fantastic! If you want to visit the Togakushi shrines this location is perfect. If I make a winter trip I'm sure I'll stay here again!
Doors were a little low for me and there didn't seem to be laundry facilities but all of that is ok!

Verified reviewThe room was large and had a good heater. The ryokan was right next to the shrine and surrounded by beautiful trees.
The communication could be much improved from the staff. The reception staff kept trying to speak to us in really bad broken English, even though we always spoke to him in Japanese. We also received no communication in advance of our stay. We had no idea that our food options would be so limited at that everywhere would be closed early. When we arrived, the staff recommended us a restaurant, but it was actually closed. We also struggled to find breakfast the next day and had to eat cake from a cafe that opened one hour before checkout! If the ryokan had communicated that most businesses would be closed, we definitely would have booked dinner and breakfast with them. Also, given the price, it was very disappointing to not be given any bath towels, only tenugui. The ryokan claims to have a 24 hour reception, but when I went down to ask for a bath towel at 8pm, it was closed. The ryokan seems to not care too much about quality either because the sheets and duvet cover were both made from cheap synthetic material. We have stayed at places half the price that still manage to provide cotton sheets and bath towels.
