How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewCozy, relaxing and comforting place with great hospitality. The architect is artistry, loved the private mood of the room, inroom spa was great with full of natural hinoki scent. Food was also great, Japanese kaiseki dinner was like michelin star dinner and morning breakfast was so delicious as well. Location is also good to visit Honmura region, you can look around Art House Projects and New Museum by walk. Strongly recommended! 꼭 다시 오고싶은 곳입니다 너무 좋아요

Verified reviewEvery single thing. It has been one of my best experiences at a hotel/ryokan, the facilities themselves are incredible, everything feels really well taken care of, the staff was incredible, all of them always kind and attentive to our needs.

Verified reviewA very special place - traditional but luxurious Japanese style rooms, excellent dining, and great staff. Also was located in the cool part of the island. Wasn’t cheap but was worth it.

Verified reviewThe good and stuff
The first thing that stands out is the room: The bed is placed right at the entrance door, on floor level, hard and smelling strongly of sweaty feet—just like the wardrobes next to it. You lie there, staring directly at your luggage, which you can’t even cover up. When I’m on vacation, I want to see something beautiful, not my suitcases! Then, when you get up, you first have to get yourself off the floor and then go down some steps just to reach the toilet. That really makes you think twice about having another drink just to avoid the whole process. The “living room” is down the steps and features the most uncomfortable couch in the world, right next to a half-bathroom. Sit on stone and stare on a sink…Whoever designed this clearly had no idea what they were doing. The chairs on the terrace are so uncomfortable that if you were a smoker, you’d probably quit right away. You can hear the neighbors talking through the walls, and air conditioning units are humming from everywhere—even if you’ve turned everything off. It’s just thoughtless design nonsense without a single comfortable seating option in the entire hotel! The only things that deserve praise are the fantastic food and the very friendly and attentive staff.

Verified reviewEverything was exceptional. The attention to detail in the room, service from staff, preparation, presentation and serving of food. Even though it was winter we sat outside next to the firepit after dinner and it was very comfortable. The beds were very comfortable, the private onsen with view out to the woodland beyond was perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The room was spacious and perfectly equipped with everything you might need. Ryokan Roka has managed to combine current cuisine with the type of service that hasn’t been seen in many fine dining restaurants around the world in years. Congratulations.
Nothing.

Verified reviewhealthy, nutritious and a delightful selection of Japanese pickles, vegetables and fish. Beautifully presented and delicious.
As a solo guest paying the same price as a couple, I found the number of bathroom room towels, amenities, and supplies meagre and that they were not replenished daily compared to other hotels I stayed in during my travels in Japan. While having breakfast, I was asked to complete a questionnaire about how I would like the room cleaned, which confused both me and the staff.

Verified reviewEverything about our stay was exceptional! Every moment was a delight, and the staff went above and beyond with their kindness and attentiveness, ensuring that everything ran seamlessly. I truly appreciated how they paid attention to even the smallest details, from personalized service to the thoughtful variation in the menu throughout our stay. Each dish was absolutely divine. The perfect balance of modern comfort and traditional Japanese culture made for an unforgettable experience. I'd love to return and highly recommend to anyone seeking an authentic experience of both worlds!

Verified reviewThe staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was spacious and great with well-equipped amenities.
However, the ryokan dinner was a disappointment. We found a hair on one of the dishes. The staff did apologize and changed it for a new one. Other than that, everything is fine.

Verified reviewEverything about our stay was absolutely lovely. The room was so nice and we enjoyed the 45 degrees Celsius hot rub in our room as well! All of the food was delicious and made with such care. We will definitely stay again. Thank you to the staff for their warm welcome!
We aren’t as used to the Japanese beds so didn’t sleep so well, but it may have been just our experience!

Verified reviewRyokan Roka is located on what they call the "Art Island" Everything was Fabulous. Amazing. Perfect. Gorgeous. The staff was so helpful and willing to solve any problems or questions. We were provided with drivers and vans to help us get to the museums and galleries. Our room was the largest we had in our 6-week trip to Japan. Unusual and amazing - what a treat! The food was beyond fantastic... it was Mouthwatering delicious. We had all come to view art, and it was wonderful to also be surrounded by art throughout the hotel So, so happy we stayed here.
