Just remember it's real Japanese countryside and not a sightseeing destination. They do have lovely rice paddies but also some busy roads and the overhead power lines will ruin your photos :) It was not a problem for us at all and absolutely in line with what we had expected, but I feel it's important to mention it.

It is a nice apartment in a garage loft. The space is spotlessly clean and neatly arranged in a "modern Japanese" style featuring tatami mats, futon beds, shoji doors etc. The host, Asami, is incredibly polite and accommodating. She quickly responded to my messages, picked us up from the train station and never bat an eyelid in response to our "on-the-way" chaotic planning. Asami's husband runs a small buddhist temple. It's very serene and open for the guests. You can also opt in for a guided tour, which we did and liked very much. The bicycles that they provided us (for free!) were very useful for exploring the surroundings. We visited Mount Shizugatake and the Nishino Tunnel. The former has splendid views; the lift was closed but it was a very pleasant walk. Regarding the tunnel: it's good to know there are actually two tunnels, the original and the modern one. This made it very easy to split into two groups (... the Adventurers and the Cowards ...). One great surprise was the Cherry Tree Alley leading to a shrine not far from the Shizugatake lower lift station. We thought we had arrived in Japan too late for the cherry blossoms, but here they had this late blooming variety that allowed us take lovely Sakura photos at the end of April!

It was great from the pick at the train station to the ringing of the bell and the temple experience!🤩

Our stay here was amazing. The owner was so warm and welcoming, and she gave us a real taste of Japanese culture by showing us around the charming town of Kinomoto, known for its soy sauce and sake. She speaks English, so it’s easy to learn about the town’s history and traditions. It is also a stone-throw away to the main city of Nagahama with a short train ride. The home was super comfortable and perfect for my family of four—it was such a special experience.

The toilet being downstairs was a little inconvenient for my older friend. Some protein at breakfast would have been really welcome.

A lovely place run by lovely people. I liked the spacious room for the two of us, the veranda, the beautiful temple which we were introduced to. The morning chanting and bell ringing was a really profound start to the day, and all offered in the most low key way. Really loved this Amida temple. 🌞 ☔ It was great to be told about the super sento 10 minutes walk away. 💦 Thanks so much for your generosity with lifts and other help. 🌻
