How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis is a beautiful onsen w a staff whose whole purpose is to make your stay as wonderful as possible. They succeeded in every way. It is a beautifully designed hotel with great attention to detail. Would happily return.
The dining rooms are a little stark and the food offerings could be slightly more interesting. But, these are very minor comments, not complaints.

Verified reviewBeautiful property. Wonderful staff. All very helpful and friendly. The public baths were wonderful. Outside baths were 2 different scenarios, one was gorgeous with five separate river rock soaking areas overlooking the river and forest, the other was 1 wooden tub in a small pavilion. Women have the beautiful spot afternoon/evening and swap with the men in the morning. Our room was very large and comfortable with a balcony and private soaking tub. The buffet style dinner and breakfast were delicious. Huge variety of freshly prepared foods. All you could eat and drink, beer, wine, various alcohol, sake, in the restaurant. The reception area had a piano, wood burning central fireplace to sit around. There were small tables with various board games, a library, snacks, beer and wine. Comfortable seating overlooking the hillside that was lit up at night. Very romantic spot to go for a special night.
Most staff spoke only Japanese, but they did a great job of communicating and with the help of translation apps, we were able to communicate. I was a little upset that I could not take my glass of sake down to the reception area to enjoy by the fire. They only allow the better quality alcohol, sake and wine during dinner hours in the restaurant.

Verified reviewGreat facilities; spacious, spotless and comfortable room which included an private hot tub that we ended up using more than the outside onsen (even though that was nice too); it was super relaxing for my tired limbs, thoroughly recommended. Best part was the wonderful buffet dinner and breakfast - so much variety on offer, and all of it was delicious. We stayed one night, but wish we had stayed a second.
If you don't have a car it can be tricky and expensive to get to; best option is to call the hotel (or fill out a Google Doc on their website) for a free shuttle bus pickup from Sakunami Station and then take a train there from Sendai. Once we figured that out though everything went pretty smoothly. The staff speak very limited English, though between the one or two check-in staff who can speak it and Google Translate this isn't a big issue in practice.

Verified reviewGreat staff service, room was big and have a drying heating rack for clothes, sofa to lounge in. Our room was facing the mountain with 2 hammocks to laze in and enjoy the great view snowing. Hotel shuttle bus reservation required to pick us up from Sakunami train station. Also, many Onsen baths within the hotel premises, both outdoors and indoors. Luxurious dinner and breakfast buffet inclusive with very fresh unlimited Sendai A5 Wagyu beef, beef tongue, sashimi, stewed beef, etc., etc., desserts, alcohol, wines, sakes, hot chocolate, lots of hot and cold drinks. Staff also able to converse in English.
Everything was GREAT! Food menu not available in English, a minor disadvantage.

Verified reviewThe Hotel has excellent food. It is called a buffet but it is not a normal buffet. All dishes (breakfast and dinner) are cooked as you go to pick them up. There are many choices and you can repeat any dish as often as you wish. Selection and variety is very good. All drinks are free (whiskeys, sakes, beers) and as much as you wish. The rooms with private hot tub are great. Hot spring water runs into the tub 24/7 and is big enough for 2 to be comfortable. Also a nice view from the room and bath.
Not so easy to access. Taxi is too expensive. Bus is slow (70 minutes approx) and uncomfortable and relatively expensive - about $25 for 2. The best is a train from Sapporo station. About 40 minutes and about $5/person. Train runs 2-3 times per hour. Buy ticket at Sapporo station to Sakanumi station. Call hotel to tell them what train you will be on and they will meet you at Sakanumi with their shuttle bus. All stations are announced in Japanese and English and there is a digital sign above each door on the train which also shows the next station so it is easy.

Verified reviewVery clean, rooms were very spacious and new. The surroundings were spectacular. Food was very good.
The lobby closed at 10pm and there was no common place to spend time with friends after that. The staff didn’t speak English almost at all, but we were okay with Google Translate.

Verified reviewA beautiful hot spring spa hotel nestled in the mountains outside of Sendai. A Lovely staff, amazing food, and a well appointed hotel. The main Onsen was lovely, and the the food and beverages were of the highest quality.
The hotel was under renovation and one of the outdoor onsens were not available which was disappointing.
