How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Terrible Experience – Avoid at All Costs Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ After a grueling 15-hour drive from Jinja, Uganda, we arrived at AA Lodge Masai Mara around 9 PM, expecting at least a warm welcome. What followed was one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve ever endured. When we arrived, we mentioned that Booking.com listed the rate as $186 USD, and we politely asked if they wanted us to book through the site or pay directly (knowing that direct payments save them agency fees). To our shock, the receptionist insisted on charging us $250 USD. After a heated 20-minute argument explaining their listed price, they grudgingly lowered it to $200 USD—but only if paid in cash. This demand for cash was highly suspicious, especially as a large sign behind him clearly stated “No Cash Payments.” Whether the staff was trying to scam their own employer or the boss was bypassing taxes, it was deeply unsettling. When I pointed out that they supposedly accept card payments (as advertised), they denied it. Exhausted and desperate for food after our long journey, I reluctantly handed over the $200 using our card as they ended up accepting it. Adding insult to injury, tour guides—who bring business to hotels—are typically accommodated for free across Uganda and Kenya. Yet, they charged our guide for food, even threatening to deny him a meal if he didn’t pay. This practice is outrageous and incredibly disrespectful to the very people who help sustain their business. Other issues we faced: • No milk for tea at dinner – They claimed they ran out but magically had some by breakfast. • Bar closed at 9:30 PM, leaving us unable to buy water for the night. • Electricity cuts – Power went out at 10 PM, and when it came back at 6 AM, the lights in our room (which we hadn’t turned off, not knowing about the outage) lit up the entire space, waking us up abruptly. There was another power outage during lunch. • Dirty swimming pool – The pool was yellow, filled with insects, and completely unusable.
Hello Matthew, Thank you for your choice for our lodge. Apologies for such experience. You checked in to the lodge as a walk in guest. Walk in guest the rate is different from Booking dot com. You agreed with the price and paid. After paying you again logged in to booking dot com and made another booking. This means you had 2 bookings with us. About tour guides, in Kenya unlike Uganda, we charge tour guides USD 10. About electricity, we have backup generator that runs when there is no power.

Verified reviewThe location is good. Very close to Sekenani gate of Masai Mara NR.
Overall it does not give people a clean feeling in terms of facility and food. Staffs were not quick to respond to requests. The hotel has a lot of potential: great location and great facility. What it needs is the willingness to put in effort to provide a better service.
Hello Wen, Thank you for the feedback, apologies for the inconveniences caused. We have taken into considerations of your feedback and we have worked on the issues raised. Thank you once again

Verified reviewLovely relaxing bush setting with wild birds to wake you up in the mornings. Location to Masai Mara reserve park is excellent...only 5 mins drive away.
Cleanliness is lacking. What used to be shiny furnishings in the bathroom, wash room, relaxing chairs outside bar and restaurant are all dirty and grimy. See pictures taken from the lodge. Could do with more bleach and detergent cleaning please.
Dear Julith, thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to make extra changes to improve you next stay with us.

Verified reviewThe place is located next to mara national park. So lits of animals running around and there's alot to see. The staff were really nice and smiling.
We the food did not suit our children. And at the time we were there they had a school trip so the lines at dinning room were really long and loud. I think they should have devide the hours for the school students and for the guests. The swimming pool is not for children or wedterns as the water were not clear and fool with bugs and mosquitos. So dont count on it. The shower had no stream of water.. and no hot water at all.
Hello Inbar, Thank you for the feedback. Sorry for your experience that you stayed with us during a school trip at our lodge. We have noted about the swimming pool and have worked on it. Next time you visit us, you will enjoy your stay.
