Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

ItalyThe communication with the owner and the staff was quite difficult. One hour before the check out we went back to the room and there were guys doing works in the bathroom, disassembling the sink with still all of stuff around..not very professional, especially because we were going to leave soon and nobody told us about it.
The place in very nice and calm in a very central position in the village of Lamu. The room was big, cozy and clean. Great value for money!

GreeceNothing in particular.
Great old house in the middle of old town and only steps from the see front. Spacious ,clean and breezy upper floor rooms. Great breakfast, rich in fruit and tasty juice. Charming Samsa and Tina were there for all our needs. Owner Baji,a warm hearted guy with a nice sense of humour , has always an answer to all your questions. We had two blissful dwow rides arranged by him at a price that did not break our wallet. Overall ,an excellent quality and price relation.

PolandVery beautiful guesthouse in the center of Lamu town. We loved the view from the rooftop and the spacious, shady, naturally wind-cooled lobby with sofas and art. The sounds of nearby mosques added to the atmosphere. The bed and bathroom were comfortable and clean. Bed with mosquito net. The breakfast was modest (fruit, eggs, toast, peanut butter, juice, tea, coffee), but tasty and sufficient. The staff was nice and helpful. The only thing missing was air conditioning, but there was a fan above the bed. The owner helped us get to it from Manda airport at a good price. He arranged a boat and a guide to take us to the guesthouse. We are grateful for your enjoyable stay.

ItalyThe owner asked me to pay in local currency despite on my booking.com receipt the price was in USD. I argued that this should have agreed in advance (exchanging currency on the island is more expensive than in Nairobi). They accepted my point. Some shutters should be repaired to provide extra security as the windows have no bars.
The room is beautiful and the lady managing the property was extremely kind and helpful. she deserves 10 points. Breakfast is provided. The position is really central, close to Lamu's main square.

KenyaWhile there isn't complimentary drinking water readily available in the rooms, there is a shop right opposite the entrance to Jamala where you are able to get water, other types of soft drinks, snacks and other basic necessities.
Jamala Guesthouse, nestled in the heart of Lamu Old Town, was an absolute delight for us first-time visitors to Lamu. It provided a unique opportunity to deeply immerse ourselves in the local culture and connect with the welcoming people. The early morning calls to prayer from the surrounding mosques, for instance, became an integral part of the immersive experience. It is located just a short walk from the boat jetty which is super convenient! The host, Baji, was not only highly responsive but also incredibly helpful. Right from the moment we made our booking, he was readily available to provide us with all the information we needed. Baji even arranged a boat pick-up for us and an enriching Old Town Tour with Abu, who was an absolute delight to be around. The rooms at Jamala were both spacious and well-equipped with all the essentials, making it excellent value for money. The breakfast was also nice and balanced, with the option of tea/coffee, bread, eggs and fruit. There is also a kitchen available complete with a fridge that is available for guests to use. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay at Jamala again! Thank you to the team for making our inaugural visit to Lamu very memorable!😊😊

United KingdomNothing too serious. The water was hot enough the first night I was there but after that the water was cold as there is solar power and the weather turned cool and overcast. If you are here for several days as I was, you may have to ask for the room to be cleaned and things like toilet paper to be replenished but they are always happy to oblige. The sign over the door of the guesthouse no longer exists and there is nothing outside to indicate that it is even a guesthouse so the place may be a bit difficult to find for someone who has not been picked up from the jetty by someone from the guesthouse and trying to find the place on their own.
Jamala Guesthouse is spacious and comfortable and in a very convenient location, in a little alley close to the waterfront. Baji's communication was excellent and the staff were lovely. Nothing was too much trouble. There was a nice breakfast in the morning with delicious fresh juice.

Germanywell ... Lamu is a 95% Muslim town = friendly(!) people and you feel very safe(!), but several Mosques loud-speaker systems compete ... so waking up at 5 can't be avoided. Why can't prayer be 'just' led by a religious man with his natural voice ? Does it really have to be amplified ~120 dB(A) for up to half an hour, every dawn, to praise and worship ? Well, other (all ?) hotels and guesthoses in Lamu and throughout the coast of Kenys have a similar situation ...
nice, clean room, excellent shower (cold AND warm water, as you choose), superfriendly(!) staff, very good breakfast, relaxed terrace with a perfect breeze (ok - this depends onto the weather), very close to the restaurants, old town and the main boat landing place ('harbour') = 15 Mins. to the airport (walk+boat)

Czech RepublicThe only thing I didn't like in the Guesthouse is that the windows in the back rooms do not allow any air circulation (not facing the sea) and because the ventilator is just above the mosquito net, it is blocking the circulation of air. It feels like in a sauna then. As there were literally no mosquitos, without the net would have been better, I think.
Jamala Guesthouse is very easy to get to. It's behind the fort so from the promenade in Lamu you take the first street left after the fort (when you go from Shela) and just go up the narrow street, watch a sign above the door to your left. The rooms are very nice and bed comfortable, shower is amazing. The breakfast was plenty with lots of fruits, egg and fresh juice. The staff is nice but of little help, if you need anything arranged you need to catch the manager. Payment is only possible in Ksh in cash. I found the green bank on the promenade having the best exchange rate (some shops exchange as well for considerably worse rate). You need an ID to get the money changed in the bank (open from 8am till 4pm weekdays). The public boat to the airport cost 200 Ksh and leaves from the left pier when facing the sea (10am). Public boat to Shela is also for 200Ksh (best before 4pm or when full) and mototaxi to Shela is for 100Ksh.

KenyaThe breakfast lacked variety, I’d prefer more swahili breakfast variety. But the chef were just good at their task. Highly recommend.
The staff and owner were amazing. I was warmly welcomed and assisted in tracing my way to the accomodation site. The cleanliness was top notch, regular room service cleaning, good breakfast and ease in traversing Lamu town. It was also a secure place.
