How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.

Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Verified reviewThe location is good. Staff is friendly.
The fan isn’t enough to cool down in the extremely hot room. Also there were a lot of mosquitos. The two persons bed was provided with a dirty mosquito net, but the bunk bed didn’t have any mosquito net. Also from the ceiling there were things falling down on the bed. Also an old toothbrush was found under the bed. And the bottom of the bed was bad, because it was hanging through the wooden bottom.

Verified reviewIf you are looking for luxury, Koh Rong Sanloem probably isn’t for you, but if you want a truly authentic experience with truly beautiful people it’s the best place. I loved my stay here. I went fishing with some mates separate to the hostel and they let me cook the fish on their bbq and we had a big feast all together. Totally what travelling is all about
The dorm walls are made of bamboo at the moment which wasn’t a problem for us but I can see why some people would get arsey about it. But they’re starting renovations to turn them into proper concrete walls so shouldn’t be an issue next year

Verified reviewThere were no walls - so everything from the front desk and common area could be heard & smelled from the bed. You could smell anytime was smoking a cigarette while trying to sleep. The door didn’t close so there was always a cat in the room (I’m allergic). You could hear and smell whenever they put out food for the dogs. It rained one night and water leaked all over my bag. I tried to ask if I could check out earlier and find somewhere else but they said it wasn’t possible. No wi-fi available
Hi, Thanks for staying with us. All of our dorms have doors that close. Every time I check a guest in, I always remind them to close the door or the cat will get in. I also close the doors every time I walk past them as unfortunately some people do not remember to latch the lock on the door. We trained our cat from a young age to stop her from going into the rooms, however, there are many guests that have taught her to sneak into the room for cuddles which has undone all of our hard work. With regard to the rain on your backpack, I think you are referring to the torrential storm that struck the whole island, causing a 15 hour blackout not just a light sprinkle. You did not mention this to us at all throughout your stay and if you had maybe we could have fixed the issue instead of us now having to wait for another storm to find out where the leak is. Your stay was a non-refundable stay, which is why you did not receive a refund. You also did not explain why you wanted a refund, just that you were leaving early and as it was the day of, we were unable to fill your bed.

Verified reviewGreat location in Mpai bay, closest accommodation to the beach in the area. All restaurants and the port are very close walking distance too. Owners are very friendly and knowledgeable about the island. Pool table and common area are great, they sell some drinks there but no food. Bed in private room was big and comfy, has a mosquito net.
The hostel has a serious the lack of noise proofing. Unfortunately our room backed onto the toilets… you can hear everything on the rooms either side of you and in the corridor. We actually had a conversation with our friends through the wall at normal volume. Bathrooms could do with some more regular cleaning. No air con in room but has a fan.

Verified reviewNice staff and friendly vibe in the hostel! Beds had mosquito nets and were comfortable.
The dorm we stayed had bamboo walls and was in the same area as the bar playing loud music until late at night. I get that it is a party hostel but it should be more clear when booking that you are pretty much sleeping in a bar. Really need proper walls or move the bar further away. Bathrooms also need a bit of a touch up.
Hi Axel, Thanks for taking the time to leave this review. We are currently in the process of building a beach bar and moving the party onto our lovely private seafront so hopefully within a few days this should no longer be an issue. Thanks again for booking with us and we hope you can enjoy the rest of your travels

Verified reviewComfortable beds and moscito nets, good location
Not social because almost everyone staying there is a volunteer and they mostly just hang out as a group, no chill area to hang out in, hostel is still new and not quite finished building, the volunteers are also not very helpful if you have questions. I personally think 8€ a night is too much for what you’re getting
Hi Mia, Thanks for taking the time to leave this review. We currently host up to 45 guests and have been fully booked since we opened, we also only have 4 volunteers who are all very sociable. We pride ourself on having a large space to chill out which is usually full with people, we also have a darts board and pool table which is always in use by guests. If you are unable to find people to hang out with in this environment, perhaps you need to alter the way you approach socialising. With regards to the pricing, we are one of the cheapest hostels on the island. We provide individual fans & plugs, mosquito nets and privacy curtains for each bed. This is not the case for the few cheaper places you may find. Thanks again for staying with us

Verified reviewThe place itself was perfect, the rooms had mosquitos nets and reallygood fans (doesn’t even need AC as we were quite cold with the fans). The staff made it even better tho, so welcoming from the start and always happy to recommend places to go and say what was going on at the hostel without pressuring you to join in (watching the six nations, bonfire)

Verified reviewLet me start by saying that I had a great stay at the Lovesick and in M'Pay Bay. The hostel is located just at the edge of the little town, two minutes from a beautiful beach and 2 minutes from the main road. Everything in this place is close together and I feel it is a perfect place to decelerate and leave the hustle of the cities behind. The owners were very friendly, as was the staff and I felt at home from day 1. My room was spacious with a beautiful sea view. It had a mosquito net and a fan (everything I need to sleep) and the beds were decent. Overall, it was a good stay for the price I paid.
I give this place a 6 despite my good experience for several reasons. First, this is a very rudimentary hostel. If I compare this with other hostels that I graded higher it falls behind. There's no coffee in the morning, no food, the showers are run down (although they were improving while I stayed there), the garden is not clean, etc. It is a young hostel and needs some development. Secondly, throughout my stay, I experience a lack of service mindset. On multiple occasions, no drinking water was available at the bar (but there was always plenty of beer). The personnel did not know much about the services and things to do on the island or where to find WiFi. I felt left to my own devices to make my stay on the island memorable. This lack of service mindest was reflected in many little things too, e.g. one day a cat brought a mouse back and the mouse blood was just left on the terrasse floor or after my stay for 8 days nobody asked me how I liked my stay. Lastly, the noise. While it is not stated on booking, com, other websites say it is a party hostel. The owner specifies this in some responses to reviews on booking. I have no issue with the concept of a party hostel or a good party here and there. Nevertheless, in Lovesick this means that at any time on any given day, anyone can play music from the speakers as lound as they please for as long as they please. The walls in this hostel are rather thin so it is no surprise that people often complained and could not sleep. Again, I think party hostels are fine and if you know when and for how long the party will last you can deal with it. I would strongly advise the owners to create a bar policy (bar until 11, afterward it is quiet and once a week there's a bigger party until early morning).
Hi Victor, Thanks for taking the time to leave this review although we must add that we are a little disappointed to read it as we felt as though we had become good friends during your stay, especially as you came to dinner with us several times while you were here. As you are aware, we have only been open around 2 months and although we have tried our hardest to ensure we have amenities necessary for people to have a good nights sleep we have decided that the added extras of food and coffee should come at a later date when we are more confident with running the business. We were, however, more than happy to direct you to our favourite coffee spots (and bars with Wifi) but you said you didn’t care it was all the same to you and you’d find them yourself. We feel as though we have a pretty extensive knowledge of our little village and we are more than happy to provide recommendations to cater anyone’s tastes. We also informed you that although we do not have a router, we are more than happy to provide you with a hotspot any time you needed. With regards to the mouse incident, unfortunately when you have a cat and you live near a jungle, you are likely to receive little gifts from them, but as soon as we were alerted to this, we cleaned the whole crime scene up straight away. As for asking how your stay with us was, this is something we try to do with all of our guests as we really love having feedback on what we can improve and when Hans (the owner) asked you how your stay was when you left you said it was great and you’d be back next year. This is another reason why we are shocked to read your review. Every morning we asked how you were and on many occasions asked how your stay was and you always said you were happy. We are currently in the process of moving the bar to the beach out the front so this should eliminate the noise created from us and we already have written in every room/dorm to respect your guests and keep the noise down, unfortunately not everyone sticks to this. Once again, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback

Verified reviewIt’s really great value for money. While the cheapest accommodation on the island, you have everything you need. The staff are volunteers, so very easy to connect with everyone as they are likeminded travellers. Everyone speaks perfect English. So spending time with the people at the hostel in the evenings is also really enjoyable if you like to socialize. The beach is super close - closer than any other hostel. And it’s still also close to all the restaurants, the pier etc. The owners are a super nice English couple who have taken on such a cool endeavor to fix up an abandoned place and enrich the island with another sweet home for backpackers and volunteers.
I was personally happy with everything, but I could understand some reviews here that were complaining about certain things. This hostel might not be for you, if you are looking for privacy or luxury. But in my opinion, you figure that out based on the booking ad already. Come with the right expectations and you will love your stay for sure!

Verified reviewOn arrival and through our stay staff/ volunteers were helpful. We were checked in within minutes and shown to our bunk. Location of the hostel was super convenient when heading to the beach (2 min walk) and for food. Owners provided recommendations and helped us when we needed travel advice from the island.
Where to start….when we were shown to our room (6 bed bunk dorm) it was quickly made obvious that not all the beds were the same and some mainly on the top bunk were missing mosquito nets. We were informed that the remaining nets are a work in progress but during our 4 night no change or progress was made. As a top bunk sleeper during our stay with no mosquito net, my body ended up looking rather disgusting from being bitten. My boyfriend who was on the bottom bunk with a mosquito net was also bitten all over during the night which makes us think mosquitos couldn’t be the only biting bugs in our beds…. The bunk beds also had no bar to stop you from falling off the bed (not that anyone did) but I was slightly concerned for my safety. Each bed was however provided with a fan on the bed that only had 2 working setting out of 4 and still it was incredibly hot during the night. Moving on to the facilities. We were told by the owners that the hostel is still really new but in my opinion there should be some cleanliness standards even when you are new. The showers and toilets were together in 3 blocks and the floor would be looking incredibly sandy everyday. Not certain how the volunteers split their cleaning duties but someone was not pulling their weight. This meant that by the end of the day when you wanted to have a shower, you’d have to step into a rather grimy looking space, clear the sand from the floor where you’re standing and then have your shower. One thing we should have realised from the pictures on booking.com but it wasn’t that obvious to myself was that there would be nightly entertainment almost every single night and by nightly entertainment I mean music until 1am in the morning. As the crowed staying in this hostel was on the younger side, with music came singing. Don’t get me wrong, myself and my boyfriend like a sing song and to hang out with others but when we want to sleep we would like to sleep.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review, we greatly appreciate the feedback. Our 6 bunk dorm is now fully fitted with mosquito nets on both the top and bottom bunks. As you mentioned, we have only been opened 6 weeks and it took that long for the nets to arrive as we had to order 30 of them. If you had mentioned at the time that you required a mosquito net (as some of our guests have done) we would have made it a priority to get one put up for you straight away. As mentioned our toilets do occasionally fill will sand, and although our best efforts are taken to clean them at least 4 times a day, during peak showering times they are likely to get sandy as we are located on our own private beach and people bring sand in with them. Both of us have slept in the bunk beds ourselves multiple time during renovations and we have never had any worries about falling out but I am sorry to hear that this was something that caused you some issues. Just to further reiterate your point, as you mentioned we do have multiple photos on booking.com featuring our nightlife, and we hope that this encourages the kind of guests who appreciate this, as we are the only late night hostel in M’pai Bay.
