How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).

In my opinion the price isn't justified, although it is lovely. The restaurant was closed the first night so we ate at the bar for lunch and dinner the first day, which is fairly basic. The resort is just not quite 'there' but definitely worth a visit.

Verified reviewThe breakfast in the hotel is good, with a variety of dishes. In particular, the hotel offers a selection of different fruits.
The safety of hotel guests is poor. On August 11, 2025, we were relaxing on beach chairs in front of our Beachfront Villa, no. 211. Many tourists were swimming that day, the waves were moderate and heading toward the shore, and a yellow flag was raised on the beach. At around 1 p.m., we pulled a drowned girl out of the water who had been vacationing at the hotel with her family. Half an hour earlier, my wife and I saw this girl on the beach jogging with her husband. Her husband and one of her family friends, who were on the beach, quickly ran to her body and immediately began to administer first aid. The hotel staff misled everyone by saying that a doctor would arrive soon. After about half an hour, the doctor still hadn't arrived, and the hotel staff were now saying something completely different: that the doctor would have to be brought in from Sihanoukville and that it would be quicker to take the injured woman by boat than to wait for the doctor at the Royal Sands hotel beach. The girl's body was placed on a stretcher and carried away from the beach. She was in very bad condition. A lot of time had been lost, and I don't think she could have survived. As this case shows, The Royal Sands Koh Rong is completely unable to provide assistance to a drowned person for the following reasons: (i) no lifeguard on the beach, (ii) no doctor, (iii) no defibrillator to restart the heart, (iv) confusion among hotel staff and contradictory information provided by staff, (v) the hotel's remoteness from Sihanoukville (the boat trip takes about an hour). All this means that in the event of drowning, the drowning victim will not be rescued in time.

Don’t go to pagoda beach area, come directly here and book months before or you will find nothing. Fantastic breakfast overlooking the sea at the Ocean Restaurant Ciao Royal Sands you will remain in our hearts!
The fruit selection is exceptional, although they should offer more options for vegetarians and not include predominantly meat dishes. Otherwise, everything was perfect.

Sandflies!! Please give more info on what they look like, where to avoid etc. I still got bitten badly even with repellant on. The resort clinic Doctor was very helpful with all my bites though!

Additionally, repellents are available at various key locations around the resort and on the beach, where we also place clear signage about their presence. Our Villa Hosts highlight this during your check-in, especially noting that beyond our designated boundaries, the presence of sandflies increases. We also carry out an extensive sandfly control program on a weekly basis to minimize their impact, particularly in our beach areas. For future reference, sandflies are tiny, almost invisible insects that tend to be more active during early morning and late afternoon. While we do our utmost to reduce their presence, we still recommend applying repellent regularly, especially on exposed areas. Verified reviewFrom the moment we were checked in at the port lounge we were greeted with friendliness and efficiency. The captain of the boat for the hotel transfer was safe and confident. On arrival to the island we were greeted by waving staff members and this unwavering kindness persisted through the stay. The villa was stunning, clean and personalised as we were staying for our honeymoon. The staff were flexible to requests and accommodated our wishes at every point. The sand was immaculate and the turquoise sea was stunning. We did the extra activities with Sinoun and he was knowledgable, caring and really made the extra effort with special touches. The food was delicious both western and Khmer. The staff throughout our stay were professional, kind, genuine and always caring for us. The hotel is perfect for guests who want quiet private time or guests who want a bit more to do. The best hotel we’ve stayed at in Cambodia and we will return!

Verified reviewThe location is very beautiful. The villas very spacious and convenient with sea view. The staff is super friendly and helpful. One of the highlights is the Ocean restaurant with delicious breakfast and a good mix of Western and Asian food.
We paid 520$ a night and therefore expensive but the price for the transfer and other activities are too expensive. The resort could have a bit more fun, more spice.

Verified reviewThis is an amazing resort. The food is excellent. The staff is very helpful and friendly, but not intrusive in any way. The room is very comfortable, large and luxurious, with daily fruit, snacks, and water. The private infinity pool with the villa is large enough for swimming and has warm water. We have had private pools previously in resorts but never one so large. We have been to many beaches in the world, but this is the best of the best. The white sand, warm clear water, and gentle waves make it the perfect beach for swimming. The villas are very close to the water for ultimate views. The beach is not at all crowded and has daily lounge chairs/umbrellas provided. Perfection!

Prices of everything would have been appropriate in Central London. Absolutely ridiculous pricing for Cambodia. Other areas and resorts on Koh Rong are not priced as such. Many small flaws and broken items in the room, not what I’d expect of a resort of this price point. Corporate greed is evident in the pricing, and will prevent me from ever returning to this property.

Verified reviewThe beach was breathtaking and the staff put a lot of effort into keeping things clean. It can’t be overstated that the staff were incredible; friendly, polite and very welcoming! The pool was lovely and rooms super clean and well equipped. They gave us insect repellent (probably in response to the sand fly complaints) but we didn’t really notice an excess of bugs/insects. Cocktail happy hour a nice touch and having the option of a low key dinner by the pool vs a more high end dinner at the restaurant. Menu was varied enough with some ‘western options’ and more local dishes.
I can think of very few improvements. The transfer options (speed boat) organised via the hotel are quite expensive in my opinion. But you do get access to a lounge at the port which is a very nice touch!

It’s still a little remote. Which can be a plus as well. But be prepared for serious 4WD tracks to get around the island.

- Inattentive staff. We requested to be in a location far from children and babies. Yet, they were right on top of us - We both had horrific bites, lasting days. Don’t know if it was sandflies because it happened in the room, at night, not on the beach - The food is outrageously overpriced and pretty bad quality - We were there five days. All five days pretty much the same breakfast options with stale croissants and other pastries. I don’t even know how it is possible to have all that stuff so stale and tasteless! - The beach is ridiculously dirty. They try to clean the little part that belongs to the hotel, but overall it is a pretty depressing scene with tons of garbage as soon as you step on the other side of the hotel fence. It is truly sad to see such a spectacular place so poorly managed. The management and owner should be ashamed of themselves So no. Don’t waste your time: there are much better places on the island, with better food, service and half the price!
Dear Marina, Thank you for your recent stay with us during your visit to Koh Rong. While certain aspects of your stay were positive including the spectacular setting of our beach. Upon arrival, our team did delivery your request and when you came to the resort was running high Occupancy, and may team made sure you were not having any children around your villa. Being the summer holidays for certain regions and being a school holiday as well, we do not advertise that the resort is an Adults only, meaning our business is open to all level of tourist both families and couples or single travelers come to stay at our resort. The point you mentioned about the bites, well like all parts of South East Asia, for sure there will be mosquitos, sandflies and other insects being near nature. Furthermore, in our villas we provide in-villa amenities, which we place in all villas insect repellent complimentary, which was next to your bedside called OFF, with a little note explaining to our guests the reason why we have this available for your comfort. Every week we have the Pest Control team that spray the beach to treat for sandflies and rack the beach with our specially designed sand racking machine to reduce this completely. Also, we spray around the villas with the same method, plus we spray the villas underneath for any other insects. We take a strong lead as management and invest a lot to provide more comfort to all of our guests. You had mentioned about the food, we purchase all of our goods at the same place where all the other 5 Star resorts purchase their foods, and we only buy high quality produced and products, to ensure the food quality is at the highest level, plus we transport all of our goods with our logistic teams from the mainland with is 25KM in distance and we do not want to want to provide low quality food to reduce the price, because we are a 5 Star luxury resort. Regarding our Breakfast, so we are the only resort on this island that has a bakery and Pastry Chef that produce all fresh breads, fresh pastries, live station for eggs and noodles and a total of 60 items available during the breakfast, which all of our foods are controlled by our Executive Chef, ensuring the food is very tasty and we don’t serve stale food or leftovers. Also, we change some items on the buffet but we keep the most popular items that guests enjoy to eat until now. The Beach being dirty, well how you describe our beach being specular is how we try to maintain our beach which is not little, just for the readers to know on our initiatives. Our beach is 550 meters long, which is not little at all, and we organize to with all my teams to pick up the plastic that is not from us but by nearby regions which pushes to our beach and we make all the efforts to clean this up which recently we collect 3 tons of trash after our boundary line of 300 meters, and we are organizing another clean-up we want to keep our beach clean. Also, you say it’s poorly managed but if you check the map, we have the longest beach on the island with is 7KM long, and we have addressed this matter to the Municipality as we cannot clean the entire stretch as we don’t have enough means of tackling the entire island. On a daily basis my teams clean our beach 3 to 4 times per day, depending on the situation or the direct the currents are coming. We have also created special bags for any guests who wish to help us collect any trash, as this was a request coming from a guest living in France, and we made all the bags from recyclable materials available with special claws to pick up any type of trash, in order not use their hands, in order to help us keep our beaches clean. Please note, we do not have any Oil Pollution, as you have put in your heading, and we have never collected oil or crude oil coming from ships, as we don’t have any oil tankers passing by our region, so this is not a fact at all! I’m not sure how we should be ashamed when we are the ones making all the efforts to keep our beach front clean and try to clean all the other trash coming from other parts of Asia. Your last comment is really not truthful and the readers should check our Facebook page and see all the efforts we have made, plus you can read all the great reviews from all previous guest on booking.com and TripAdvisor. It is unfortunate that we were unaware of your dissatisfaction in various areas which, regretfully, did not allow us the opportunity to make appropriate changes or recommendations in order to ensure your complete satisfaction. We strive to deliver memorable experiences for our guests and we constantly adapt to meet the individual desires of our guests; however, when our guests communicate their overall satisfaction, both verbally and through body language, while masking their inner displeasure, then we are left with no indication for us to take action on and to rectify with immediate urgency. Also, we wanted to mentioned, that at no point did you speak to our teams regarding any of these matters, nor did you say anything to our Villa Host Manager, who was ready to serve and listen to any issues you wanted to raise with us.
