It was a shame we were the only guests as it was very quiet (but this happened nearly everywhere we went in SL!) it rained a lot when we were here so we had some nice relaxing sits on the veranda watching the lake.

We had a nice stay, the room was comfortable, the house was lovely, our hosts were very hospitable and helpful, we chose to eat at the house and had the crab curry and had a lot of fun watching the cooking with Malar and Ranjan. We only had one night in Batticaloa but enjoyed exploring the market, the temples, the fort and this was a great base to do it.

Not worth $45 USD per night

We could not find a justifiable reason for the high cost of this place. $45 USD is not worth it. The cost for the dinner is also 3000 rs per person, and this is 3x the cost of any other meal we have had here in Sri Lanka. The meal was huge, but we also had a similar sized meal in another city that barely cost 1000 rs. total. This property is not owned by the family that works here, it is owned by a bigger corporation. We stayed here because it was off season and we ran into some issues with that traveling up the east coast in low season, so we needed to be sure we could get basic necessities like food and water. I cannot reiterate how incredibly great the family who works here was. However the cost is not worth it, and the money likely goes towards the corporation that manages this property. Another hidden cost you will be incured with is a 600rs service charge at the end of your stay. While I don't mind to tip out the staff, I don't like to be forced to do it, with no real knowledge of how the money is divided up and given to the workers. I would have to give this place a pass if I came back to Batticaloa, based on my own values of how I like to travel. Make your own call. Overall there are no complaints about the accommodation and services themselves. There is no AC, but we found we didn't need it over night.

The facilities were clean and safe, the hot water worked well, and although there were some mosquitos and gnats at night, our bed had a huge mosquito net and we slept comfortably and well both nights. It is within walking distance to local restaurants, and about 5-10 min walking from the main bus stand. The view is very nice across the water, and it is a nice calm environment despite it being right next to a road. They seemingly have unlimited amounts of food! We were treated extremely well by the housekeeping/grounds keeping staff/family. They are incredibly kind and friendly. They cooked us an incredible meal one night, all fresh, and allowed my partner who is a chef, to step into the kitchen and learn Sri Lankan cooking one on one. We were treated to fresh lime juice and coconut juice, as well as many cups of tea and coffee (served in a French press). The room is clean, though the lighting is a bit dark, it goes along with how the house is an old colonial/Dutch style home so it wasn't a big deal. Wifi worked well. Towels were thick and crisp.

A new coat of whitewash on the walls would improve the appearance (and first impression!) considerably.

Nice old colonial building with lots of character. Close to the centre of town. Exceptionally friendly and helpful hosts with tasty home cooking.

A Gem of a guest house in Batticaloa.

If you want a modern well equipped hotel this is not for you, the wifi is a bit slow, theres only ceiling fans and no AC. But to be honest it did not matter as the whole experience was the best.

The hosts are absolute excellent. Nothing was any trouble. they waited on us hand and foot. The building is quite old but has so much charm and history, the owners are fantastic and made us tea and coffee whenever we arrived. We had breakfast each day and an evening me on one. It was a fantastic traditional cooked Shell and Sea fish. Rice and vegetables were bought fresh each day. Proper coffee and tea. It was an absolute joy to be there. Location was good, shops, market, restaurants and stores all nearby. House is steeped in history and would absolutely stay there again. ,Owners were a delight.

Very unclean place- walls and floors were dirty. There was a rat in the bathroom. The water from the shower was just dripping so we could not have a shower! Rooms were very dark with no windows. We paid around Rs 19000 per day for a family room only because the other rooms were with shared bathrooms ! We expected a higher standard accommodation for the price we paid. Extremely disappointed! Made us very angry!

Breakfast was very good and the workers were very friendly

    The shower was not powerful.

The property was run by a charming couple who could not be more helpful. The view was breathtaking. The cooking was excellent as they obliged us with other meals to order. The service was first class. It was the best value accommodation of my entire trip to Sri Lanka.

nothing, I am not a fan of big luxury hotels etc, which I feel are environmentally not sustainable.

probably the only place in Batticaloa with a traditional open house and veranda with the classic view of Batticaloa lagoon with net fishing catamarans and fort a home stay rather than a nobody in a mega hotel complex and unnecessary frivolities freshly cooked food , all typical of eastern province and locally sourced or from the owner's organic estate and farm. dawn, day or evening ,sitting in the planters chair on the veranda is great.
