Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SloveniaIf people have trouble walking up steep streets and stairs, this may not be the best location. It didn't bother us. The house is within walking distance of the center, but as I said, it's in a very steep area. However, you can also take a taxi. We found it nicer up here than in the super touristy center of Ella. It's also very quiet and peaceful here (and the trains don't pass by the house often, so they do not really disturb).
We had everything we needed here and felt very comfortable. The view of the mountains from the terrace in front of the apartment (you can see Little Adams Peak) is wonderful, and you are practically sitting in the owner's garden with avocado trees and lots of fruit. The room is very large and well equipped. Everything worked perfectly. The delicious breakfast, which was served to us on the terrace in the morning, left nothing to be desired. If you want to go hiking in Ella, you can start right behind the house (where the railroad tracks run). The owner is happy to give tips on excursions and hikes in the area.

United StatesIt's possible to reach by van, but since the road is narrow, easier to get there on foot or by tuktuk
Breakfast was excellent, the view is amazing (can see where the name comes from), location less than 10m walk to shops & restaurants but still quiet and peaceful. There are very nice hikes in the area (such as Ella Rock and Pekoe Trails 15 and 16).

ItalyDue to the panoramic view, the property is not on the main street but on an uphill side road. In any case, the town center is within walking distance (or can be reached by tuk-tuk if preferred)
Spacious and clean room. It has a terrace with a beautiful panoramic view of the waterfall and a small table where you can have breakfast. Choice between Sri Lankan and Western breakfast—both are good. Friendly and helpful staff.

NetherlandsOur only note is that there wasn’t an AC. But we didn’t mind at all as there is a big fan pointed at the bed and it isn’t that hot in Ella.
So far, this was our best stay in Sri Lanka! The room is very nice, with a very very big bed, a nice bathroom and even a working refrigerator. The owners were also really sweet and helped us with laundry (for only 500 roepies) and provided us each morning with an amazing breakfast with fresh fruit, juice and toast with fried eggs and avocado (I think from their own garden, as we saw several avocado trees). And of course the amazing view of the ella rock and little adam’s peak you can see while in bed. The location is also great, as it is only a 15 minute walk by road or a 10 minute walk over the train tracks. Overall, this was an amazing experience and we would definitely recommend to stay here if you visit Ella!

New ZealandThe view is as advertised, absolutely stunning! Big clean and comfortable room, the owner was very kind and helpful and even assisted us in renting a scooter, the breakfast was also fantastic. Don't let the location put you off it is only a very short walk to the town center and restaurants along the railway tracks.

Greece**Sergeant Hotel, Unawatuna – A Tropical Whisper in the Heart of Sri Lanka** Nestled among the lush foliage of tropical Unawatuna, where greenery gently brushes against quiet architecture, lies a serene retreat of refined taste – the **Sergeant Hotel**. The first impression is a canvas of dappled sunlight and shade. The pool reflects the sky like a still mirror, framed by smooth stone and tropical leaves, inviting you to surrender to the art of stillness. The daybeds whisper of lazy afternoons: deep breaths, slow thoughts, a good book, a soft breeze. Inside, the design is a beautiful marriage of colonial charm and modern comfort. Earthy tones, organic textures, and a sense of calm permeate the space. The bedroom is a sanctuary in itself – the four-poster bed with its flowing mosquito net feels like a scene from a romantic novella. Everything is meticulously curated, from handmade rugs to warm ambient lighting and a cleanliness that honors the traveler. Outdoors, the sitting area with wooden armchairs and a modest table offers the perfect setting for a quiet morning coffee or a starlit drink, all to the backdrop of rustling palms and distant birdsong. The staff? Unfailingly discreet, genuinely kind, and effortlessly warm – the kind of hospitality that doesn’t need to be taught, because it comes from the heart. The **Sergeant Hotel** is more than a place to stay. It is an experience. A pause in your journey where you can rest, dream, and truly be. **Rating: 10/10** *Ideal for couples, nature lovers, and soulful travelers seeking authenticity and peace.**

United KingdomHonestly we loved everything, even the tuk tuk drive up the winding hill to get to the home stay!
We arrived in the dark and had to leave at 7am but oh my god, the view when we woke up! An extraordinary place with views to die for. The room was so clean and spacious. The host even brought us egg sandwiches at 7am to eat on the next stage of our travels. I honestly cannot fault this place, just wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you!

United KingdomThere is no floor divide in the bathroom so the entire floor gets wet when you shower.
Friendly hosts who even walked us down the railway at night in to the town centre (as this is a shortcut meaning it takes less than 10mins) We then realised it's very safe and we could use our own phone's torches to return by ourself. Gorgeous views of Little Adam's Peak. Mosquito net in the room. Delicious and filling breakfast - options of Western or Sri Lankan.

BelgiumThe view from the terrace! It cannot get better than this! Squirrels running over your terrace, a lot of vibrant colorful birds can be seen. Very idyllic. Good bed and pillows. Close to the centre (10min) walking on the train tracks. We visited Adam's little peak on foot (reached top in 1h20), arch bridge in 40min and waterfall in 20min.

AustraliaWe had one of the upper rooms and had spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains complete with a magnificent waterfall. Fabulous Sri Lankan breakfast on our balcony each day with so much wildlife joining us! Monkey's used our balcony frequently to launch into fruit laden trees. So many species of birds were within arms reach! Fire fly's at night favoured these trees. A little out of town but with plenty of good restaurants nearby or a shortcut stroll along the rail line to the main town and all it has to offer. Nice to have a hot shower!

AustraliaThe accomodation can be a little tricky for tuk tuks and cars to get to. However this wasn’t an issue for us as after we arrived, we walked to and from the accomodation using the trail behind our room.
We loved the room and the hosts were so friendly. Breakfast was delicious. There is a walking trail on a train track out the back of the room which is lovely to walk on. It’s a short walk to the main road with lots of bars and restaurants. The view was so beautiful. Overall would highly recommend!!
