How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat location, slightly tucked away from main strip of Ella which we found too busy. A 10 minute walk to nine arch bridge and start of Little Adam’s peak. Very comfortable beds, we were so happy it was a duvet rather than a sheet.

Verified reviewGreat clean accomodation so close to everything but without the noise. Breakfast was plentiful and staff attentive. We were upgraded which was appreciated and the owner kindly drove us to the short distance to the railway for an early train.

Verified reviewWe had such a great time in Ella thanks to Freedom Guest Inn and their hospitality and kindness. The location was perfect for us and the cost was exceptional given the popularity of Ella. The hosts were lovely and helpful at every opportunity. We were even given a ride to the train station for the early train to Kandy. So grateful to have stayed there. Thanks.

Verified reviewThe overall appearance and how central it was to Ella town. The whole place and the room was immaculately clean, the bed was comfy and it had a hot shower. Due to the climate in Ella the fan was just enough however any hotter than it was in April it may not be cool enough. The location was excellent, you could walk easily (and it was beautiful walk) to the nine arch bridge, you can do this by turning right at the end of the road the inn sits on, going out to the main road. You will walk down the B113 till you get to a craggy/rocky footpath on your left (I will leave a screenshot in images) that has a white house on the left within 10/20 metres of that path, follow orange arrows painted on the trees (and orange circles on your way back). This adds to the experience of visiting the bridge. We went for 6am as it starts to get busy from 7am, first train comes at 6.30 (modern train) and sometimes depending on what day one of the old trains come at around 7.30. We also went to Little Adams peak (also walkable from the Inn approximately 40 mins) and Ravana Falls which is a little more of a trek, a good hour or a 10 min drive. Restaurants as a must go has to be the clay pot, best Sri Lankan curry of your life! again you can walk there in 20 mins, take the left before the famous arch in the town( the only arch) and walk up and right to go over the track, should be right in front of you up some wooden stairs( I have nicknamed the stairway to heaven). Good coffee shops are Rocky Ella and The Barn at Starbeans. All in all loved our stay in Ella, thanks to a comfy and clean bed to come back to that had lovely soft sheets.
The hot water in the shower last 10 mins a go, so if taking them after each other, spread them out a little longer, however this would not stop me staying here again.

Verified reviewGreat location close to town, hosts provided free breakfast. We were upgraded to a nicer room at no extra charge as the hosts had other guests arriving wanting our room.
Damp smell in the room. Our first room downstairs was very dark and fan only no air-conditioning.

Verified reviewOur stay at this homestay was exactly what we needed. The room was spacious and clean, with a private bathroom and fan. The breakfast was fantastic, each morning they brought out something different and always asked if we wanted more. The staff were friendly and super helpful. The location was perfect. Close to the main stretch, but far enough away to get some peace. Close to nearby attractions like Little Adam's peak and the 9 arch bridge.

Room by office was very noisy with owner talking and doing his business. Also shared wall with family residence so noisy in the morning.

Verified reviewGreat location in Ella, walking distance to city centre but not too noisy at night. Also excellent location to walk to Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak! Plenty of parking space for our rental tuktuk. Nearby to a laundry where we had some clothes washed. Breakfast was delicious and staff were accommodating.
Our room on the ground floor was quite dark given we kept the blinds closed as the window was right where staff and other guests were walking / eating breakfast. There was only one outlet in the room (and one in the bathroom) which made charging our devices a challenge. But these are very minor things! I would still very much recommend this place to other travellers.
