How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat location to be able to enjoy the sea turtles in their natural habitat.
The reef is very close, therefore the sea can be quite noisy at times as can the passing trains on the nearby railway line.

Verified reviewFantastic location, beach right on your doorstep, quaint thatched cabins very well spaced out in the grounds. While expensive compared to other modern accommodation, the huts while basic are very comfortable, but you are definitely paying for the privilege of space overlooking the ocean. They could easily fit in more huts but have chosen not to. Beds were very comfortable. Large verandah area out the front of huts. Staff were genuinely extremely friendly and ensured huts and grounds were cleaned regularly. The sand beach area unfortunately is limited, as over the past few years a lot of the sand has been washed away, however the main draw is the turtles which inhabit the area which you can swim with.
Nothing to do with the accommodation, there needs to be someone supervising the turtles due to inappropriate actions (e.g. people holding onto them, trying to ride them). At the risk of causing ructions internationally, it's Russian tourists doing this from what I had witnessed. Only other downside was the trains passing nearby which were very noisy, mainly noticeable late evening/early morning.

Verified reviewIncredible place right on the beach. Beautiful grass area for relaxing adj to the beach too! The host was incredibly hospitable, always responded promptly and helped us with our individual needs. The apartment is beautiful and well-maintained. At this point in the trip, we’ve enjoyed one nice meal also. We would certainly recommend a stay
My only minor criticism is it is next to a fairly busy road so there’s not much opportunity to have a walk in the evening apart from along the beach. The advantage however, is there are always Tuk Tuk available outside to take you to the nearby areas..
Yes, the main road is not for walking. But there are very beautiful and quiet walks just turn the next road away from the main road and it leads you the school the temple and other small village roads.

Verified reviewRoom was big, clean, comfortable Location next to turtle beach is great, early in the morning not too many tourists Parking spot if you come with a car Very friendly staff, all processes easy
Have to pay in cash Immediately off the main road Turtle beach has become super touristy, many tourists touching turtles (which you shouldn’t do) - but this is not directly related to the property

Verified reviewLocation just next to Turtle Beach and only 10 minutes to city center by tuk tuk. Delicious food and very friendly stuff!
Didn’t expect very noisy street, railway tracks and building works just next to our apartment. We heard everything and was difficult to take a rest.

Unfortunately the giant turtles caused much excitement and we feel unnecessary attention.

Could do with a fridge and coffee facilities. Small sky lights/windows in the bathroom could do with fly screens on them as lots of mosquitos at night

Verified reviewWe really enjoyed our stay at this hotel, especially the beautiful garden with coconut palm trees and the fantastic location right by a beach where we could see turtles. The food in the restaurant was delicious, and our cabana was very comfortable, equipped with everything we needed. Breakfasts served on the terrace of the house were absolutely magical, adding a special touch to our mornings.
This was our most expensive stay during our trip to Sri Lanka. While it was convenient to be right by the turtle beach, we are still wondering if this justifies the significant price difference compared to our other accommodations.
Dear Magdalena Our prices depend on the season and you came in the most demanded new year season. Normally our prices are much lower. Sorry for that. Deepika

Verified reviewA family-run hotel offering both bungalows and a residence. We had the chance to experience both and can highly recommend them. Unlike the bustling city center, the hotel is located in a quieter area, making it perfect for those seeking relaxation and tranquility. The hotel has its own restaurant where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Additionally, they offer Ayurvedic massages, which we wholeheartedly recommend—the best massages we’ve ever had! It’s just a few minutes by tuk-tuk to the center of Unawatuna. The beach is easily accessible, and the hotel has its own garden where guests can relax and sunbathe peacefully. Thanks to natural wave breakers, the sea is calm and ideal for children. We were completely satisfied with our stay and can recommend this hotel 100%. A big thank you to Deepika, the family and staff for making our Sri Lanka trip so special! The hosts are exceptionally helpful, welcoming, and caring, always ready to assist in any way they can. We will come back for sure :-)

Deepika was so accommodating and even gave us a late check out. It felt like being in a family. They would serve us our breakfast on our veranda so we can sit in peace looking at the ocean. Dreamy.

Verified reviewThe key feature of this hotel is the warm and friendly staff. In my experience, it's not often that staff friendliness can be described as sincere in a hotel, but this is case in point. The hotel is not luxurious but we were impressed by the top apartment - spacious with a great view from the large balcony. Mosquitos were a problem, so come prepared with repellent. Beach access was a bit limited during our visit due to a high tide and rough sea, but the turtles nevertheless came to the next beach along when prompted by locals with food for them.
The hotel lacks a pool and spa facilities. Payment must be made in cash.

We stated in the Ukussa apartment and loved it! It is very convenient that the beach is near, you can hear ocean sounds which is very calming. Food in the restaurant good quality. Swimming with the turtles was the best experience!!!! Highly recommend staying at this place.

Verified reviewSleeping to the sound of the waves. Early morning ocean swim. The feel of privacy with my loved one.
There was an issue with Ants and I think the Bungalow would benefit to have a net attached to the windows to avoid mosquitos. Also if the shower tiles were not stained it would be perfect

Booking’s photos are better than the real situation. Our cabana had windows without glass, no soundproofing, only wooden, thin walls, many holes everywhere, making it accessible to all animals, outdated bathroom. Noisy due to passing trains, strong winds and the ocean. But the icing on the cake was the rat we noticed inside our cabana running around the perimeter of the ceiling! After that, we left the place immediately, spending only one night.
We offer authentic wooden beach cabanas with palm leaf roofs for a natural ventilation, exactly as shown in the pictures. With the sea breeze and the ceiling fan the climate is controlled in a natural way. In the tropics it’s a matter of fact that wildlife is much more abundant and visible and the palm trees are home to squirrels and mice. We strongly advise our guests not to have and food in the cabana because these animals are very clever. We also have our cats around (but they go for the squirrels as well 😢) We are very sorry for your bad experience and keep doing our best to separate our wildlife from our guests. Please enjoy the rest of your holiday.
