How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

It’s actually not that much about the hostel but i ended up (female) in a room with 3 men..which was a bit akward. Also one man was snoring whole nights and those nights were sleepless for me :/

Verified reviewAmazing staff and clean rooms. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. The staff were very helpful, friendly and kind. Great location, close to the main street, shops and beach. A great place to stay and meet other solo travellers. The toilets and showers are cleaned regularly and have always been very clean. The best thing about this place by far is the staff. They are all amazing and eager to help you with any issues or give you advice. The manager is one of the nicest people and is always there to help you out or make you feel welcome. He gave me a lot of recommendations for things to do and see while here and was always eager to help me out. He couldn't have been better!

WiFi was bad, air conditioning kept turning on/off, there was some power outages a few times, and the bathroom has no floor mat so it’s gets very wet and never really dries

The room was dirty, full of dust and mould. The sheets were stained, the air conditioning unit was mouldy. There was no option to open the curtains as the window faced the courtyard, giving you no privacy. The room was also way smaller than the description suggests. I arrived very late at night and had no option but to stay the night. The next morning, I immediately spoke to the manager and said I am moving out. He made me pay for two nights and told I am not allowed to leave a negative review. When I raised an issue with Booking.com, the manager refused to cooperate with them and issue the refund for an extra night I didn’t stay. The worst experience I’ve had in all of Sri Lanka.

Our private rooms are equipped with fully functional air conditioning, and the details listed including room size and layout, accurately match what we offer. Regarding your concerns about privacy, the window design and placement are exactly as shown in our listing. While some guests prefer natural light, we also understand privacy matters, and we’re always happy to help with any requests if brought to our attention during the stay. As for the payment, we followed our standard 48-hour cancellation policy. Since your booking was non-refundable within that window, we charged only for the first two nights and refunded the remaining three, even though we did not find the issues raised to reflect the room’s actual condition. We want to emphasize that guests are always free to share honest reviews. We never request or restrict feedback of any kind. We appreciate your comments nonetheless and hope your future travels in Sri Lanka are enjoyable.

Verified reviewStayed in the 4 bed female dorm for 4 nights and had a great time. The hostel is steps away from the beach and walking distance to some really great restaurants. The room I stayed in had its own bathroom and AC which was major compared to the hangover in Ella. The beds were comfortable and the room was cleaned each day I was there. The family dinner was great the 2 times it happened but the pregame before the “pub crawl” could have been better. It was very boring (card games/jenga) and did not really hype up or get everyone in the mood or the night. The parties in the area are a hit or miss depending on the type of music you enjoy. Other than that, the workers are very kind and provided me with information on how to get back to negombo.

I had an incredibly disappointing experience at Hangover Hostel in Mirissa, and I honestly can't recommend it. The place had a lot of potential, but it completely fell short in almost every way. First off, the cleanliness was appalling. The bathrooms were dirty, and there was an unpleasant smell throughout the common areas. The sheets felt unwashed, and I even found a few stains on them. The room was basic, but not in a charming, minimalist way—instead, it just felt rundown and neglected. I had more than 30 mosquito bites every night, no mosquito net. The dorm is so small you can barely walk on the Flor. Very small window. The staff was another huge letdown. Not only were they unhelpful, but they also seemed disinterested in providing any sort of service. There was a general lack of hospitality, and whenever I asked for recommendations or assistance, they either ignored me or gave half-hearted answers. It's as if they were more focused on their own issues than guest satisfaction. The noise level was unbearable. The hostel is supposedly a "party" hostel, but the noise went on until early in the morning, and it made it impossible to sleep. If you're looking for rest, this is definitely not the place for you. On top of all that, the location, while close to the beach, didn't make up for the lack of basic comforts and hospitality. With so many other places in Mirissa to choose from, I can't imagine why anyone would willingly stay here. Overall, I left feeling frustrated and exhausted. For the price, I expected much better. I would definitely not return, and I strongly suggest looking elsewhere. There are definitely better options In the area to choose from.

We appreciate your feedback very much, but it’s weird that you spent three nights with us with these difficulties that you are pointing out and we wish you had spoken and allowed us to address the same during your stay. We take cleanliness very seriously, so our staff is well trained to maintain cleanliness properly on the premises. We even rated 8.7 on booking.com for cleanliness. We have published the actual pictures of the facilities and amenities on every booking platform and it’s your decision to choose us over the other options. We even rated over 8.5 on booking.com for comfort and facilities. There were another 5 guests accommodated in the same dorm and we haven’t got any complaints about mosquitoes. We are very sad that it was you had to experienced this. Once again, if you had inform about this to our staff during your 3-night stay we would have taken the necessary actions to address the same. Our staff is one of our main strengths and you can see our staff rated 9.1 on booking.com and they never intend to disappoint any of our valuable guests. We have noticed that you even participated for the events organized by the hostel such as surfing and all the participants got free beer and then you even enjoyed the family dinner on the same day. It’s sad to hear that you didn’t have a good time with us after participating for all those events. Further, you even slept in the wrong bed at 4 am in the morning and then woke up everyone else in the dorm at 6 am to look for your phone. Two girls were accommodating in the same dorm wanted to check-out early due to the inconvenience caused by you and we had to refund them in full. While we really appreciate your feedback given, we would be really happy if you respect the house rules follow the same so no one gets inconvenienced. Our best wishes to you.
