How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewA Beautiful boutique hotel tucked away in the heart of a village but within easy reach of all the main sites. All the rooms were spacious with lovely furniture, comfortable beds and bed linen and well appointed. The communal areas and pool were so relaxing. The owner and staff were very attentive, friendly & professional, providing a wealth of information about the local area and helping to organise cost effective tours. The food (breakfast and evening meal) was delicious and inexpensive.

Verified reviewStaff were fantastic and friendly. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and clean, and the shower had hot water. Restaurant on site had tasty food and the whole premises had a calming vibe.
Location was not within easy walking distance to a town or shops so we were unable to head out for lunch/dinner (which was fine as Hotel Heladiv had great food options at their restaurant).

Verified reviewA perfect place to explore the temples of Anuradhapura and Mihintale. We asked for a private guide and the hotel set us up with one of the best guides, a very friendly and experienced man. We arrived at noon, refreshed ourselves in the pool and great rooms (good beds!) and at 4pm the guide took us to Mihintale. We had a great dinner at the hotel and also the breakfast was a 100%. At 9:30am our guide took us with his tuktuk to the temples and showed us around this magnificent place. We finished the day with a refreshing dive in the pool. A great stay and highway recommended!

We feel scammed by the hotel manager. He arranged a driver-guide because we wanted to visit the Unesco site. The manager recommend this guy who tried to scam us. He proposed to buy the tickets with our money and brought us to temples that are not on the Unesco site. This is a standard trick, he keeps the 4x 10.000 rs in his pocket. After the first temple I got suspicious and directed him to go to the Unesco temples. Suddenly this temper changed, he drove agressively and stayed in the tuk tuk instead of guiding us, as was the deal. Afterwards I heard this hotel is notorious about working with crooks. A hotel that tries to scam its own guests is an absolute no-go for me!

A bad reputation would ruin our business, and in Sri Lanka — where tourism is our lifeline — hotels like ours operate under strict regulations. We take that seriously. What happened in your case was due to a shortage of available guides at the time of your visit. To ensure you could still enjoy your trip, we quickly arranged an external guide. Once a guide is assigned and leaves on a tour, we do not control where they go, as they work directly with the guests and follow the requests given to them. We understand this specific guide’s behavior may have felt off and perhaps a bit tempered, and for that, we sincerely apologize. As for the comment about our hotel being “notorious for working with crooks,” we have to respectfully disagree. If that were true, we wouldn’t still be in business — tourism is built on trust, and we depend entirely on guest satisfaction to survive. We are sorry that this isolated incident overshadowed what could have been an excellent stay. Your feedback will help us be even more selective with external guides in the future.

Verified reviewWe just stayed 3 nights at the hotel Heladiv in Anuradhapura. We had a great time. Wonderful rooms, nice relaxing area's and open restaurant and a very nice pool. The staff realy goes out of their way to help you and make your stay more comfortable. 5 star experience. Excellent value for money! It's a bit out of the way, but that's not a problem. Breakfast is very nice, but everybody morning the same. They could give a bit more variation. But I do highly recommend this place! They arranged a very nice and informative tuktuk tour to the ancient city of Anuradhapura. If your looking for a friendly and good guide, ask for Sanjana. Great value.
