Shared bathroom was unexpected but didn’t prove to be a problem.

Sampath and his wife were truly amazing hosts, catering for our every need. Location was fantastic, bed was very comfortable. It’s a little primitive but that’s why I chose it - met my expectation as a hidden jungle retreat! The food served was excellent. I really enjoyed our stay.

You are away from shops etc, so if you have no transport, you rely on the single which comes and goes or the owner will take you for a fee. I am not sure whether the fee asked is a fair price as we did not need it. The safari deal is very very expensive for what you get. Other tourists in the park had paid much less and had a cooler with a variety of drinks as well as guide and driver. Our group had a driver who couldn’t understand English, so didn’t give us any information. I would suggest doing some research beforehand and booking not with the owner. When he was given negative feedback, he did not offer any refund, kept saying it was an external contract. I have found out since that you can get discounts on groups of more than 1 person, and that was not told to our group of 5. We paid 30k LKR each. The food on the tour was cooked by the owners wife, they had made an effort, unfortunately, my vegetarian meal had a meat sausage in, so I couldn’t eat lunch. There was some discrepancy over the booking. It did a bit of discussion which was frustrating, in the end, I paid for the nights I was there. The owners are welcoming, but I feel that you have to make sure you are not paying extra and I felt I did not trust him in the end. Which is a shame.

The hosts are very welcoming and the food is really good. It is very quiet and peaceful. No internet signal, so be aware of that if you can’t live without the phone. I was happy to have no signal. Beds are comfy, the fan is strong. It is very rustic, the walls are made of mud, no roof over the rooms, covered by a large roof to stop the weather coming in.

I had no phone service and very poor wifi. This is totally fine! As it is beautiful you don’t need to be on a phone. But for me I was solo travelling for the first time and this was my first night in Sri Lanka and I was the only guest that night (which was nice!) but was a bit nervous as if anything happened I had no way of contacting anyone from home. ( I don’t think I would have found this a problem at all if I was travelling with someone). However I am sure I would have been taken care of if this did as staff were very kind and hospitable.

The staff are very kind and food was AMAZING!! The staff went out of their way for me and were very kind. The accommodation is also very hidden so if you like nature it’s great! On the first day I arrived they also took me for a walk to the neighbouring house/farmer were we picked some fresh vegetables to have with an amazing dinner. Food is DELICIOUS!!!

Loved that it was hidden in the jungle! Basic accommodation but loved the location, tranquility and sounds of surrounding nature. Food was lovely. Sampath and his wife, Ajanta, were the perfect hosts and so helpful. He organised our safari, helped us with a visit to the doctor, took us fishing at the nearby lake and his son came to do a karaoke one night. All very enjoyable and loved Wilpattu NP. An unforgettable experience. My kids loved the frogs!
