How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewRustic little place up in the tea plantations, away from the noise of the town, but still only 10 mins' walk to the shops and restaurants via the shortcut. Lovely outside seating area with beautiful views across the hills. Breakfast is nice and substantial. Very friendly cat and dog.
The single room with private bathroom does not exist. It is a shared bathroom, which is simple but clean. I was annoyed about this at first, but the place kind of grows on you!

Verified reviewWhat an amazing place to stay. Away from all the chaos, so peaceful with great views. The host was so welcoming, helped me get a bus ticket and dropped me as well. Rooms were cozy and bathrooms clean. Lassie the dog and Charlie the cat made sure I was entertained during my stay. Also got to meet and share great conversations with amazing fellow travellers. I would come back definitely sometime. Value for money!

Verified reviewNice hostel in a remote serene quiet area, 20 min walk to town (at night it can be treacherous). Atmosphere is very nice, getting in contact with others is easy. Fell in love with the dog and the cat. Prices very good. You can rent Thutis's scooter.
Be aware of many flies, though Thuti does everything to get them away. Breakfast is simple, but is included.

Verified reviewHome Hostel is unbeatably located, funky and rustic, and totally charming. With lovely chill spots, lush surroundings, and a stunning view of the monastery on the hill, this was my favourite stay in Sri Lanka. Gihan is a wonderful host, and I really enjoyed my stay here.

Verified reviewThe other amazing guests I met there is the only reason for a 2 star
I didn’t want to get into details for my rating, but after I received rude and abusive messages from the owner I decided to share my experience in more details! The owner doesn’t have a very stable personality. He might be very nice to you if he likes you but if for any reason (in my case he didn’t like where my parents come from !!) he doesn’t like you, he can get extremely rude , unfriendly and make your stay very uncomfortable or even give you some racist comments His poor English makes it very difficult to communicate with him, and I guess he gets some misunderstandings in some situations. Although I arrived as the first guest in that day I got the worst smallest room, which didn’t have even a door, I had to go through a window, inside the room had zero Wi-Fi connection, but even my local SIM card was not having any network , I was okay with the room but at the end, when he charged me the same price that he charged others who had three beds in their big rooms I was shocked. The bed was very uncomfortable. There was no sheets!! I used my sleeping bag. The owner was not helpful with any question and he was never present. I had to ask him over seven times to come and get the money because I wanted to leave . In the evening I needed something. I called him so many times and he didn’t answer , although he was in the room ! he could even hear two of us struggling to turn on the hot water but he didn’t come to help , then afterwards he came and said ‘oh we have hot water, I could hear you trying to turn it on !! ‘ as all hostels I’ve been in Sri Lanka were really nice , hospitable and made great experience, I think you should stay away from this Hostel to avoid any weird circumstances

Verified reviewGood room, a hot shower, a quiet area, not far away from the town, a good and big breakfast, a cute doggy and kitty, a nice common area, very cozy.
Mixed feelings about the owner. He seemed like a nice guy, but I didn't feel welcome there. I arrived at 5 p.m. and without even saying hello or introducing himself, he just showed me my room. After I had some questions to ask about what you see in Ella and how to get to the next town, his answers were like - yeah, people go to Ella Rock... yes, you can go to Little Adam's Peak... but my favorite was when I asked him where can I get a bus to Haputale, his answer was - in Ella town. Absolutely useless. Then he complained that I had asked too many questions. Later on, he explained that he had just woke up, fyi it was 5 p.m. The end was also unpleasant, I realized they provided towels to other guests but not me, the same as a ride to the train station. Apparently, for him, my backpack wasn't heavy enough to give me a ride, but heavy enough for a Tuk-Tuk. I left with a bad aftertaste.

Verified reviewThis has a hostel feeling but as it says, private rooms only, which is nice, so you get both. The kitchen is open and tea/coffee is available. I kindly got dropped at the train station by car which was a big help with bulky luggage ! The location is stunning. Short-cut to the town centre through tea plantations. Nice pets and perfect climate & air.
One needs to know their way there at night but all good
