How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewGreat location, 30 second walk to the beach. Rooms are fairly clean and comfortable. Staff are nice and it’s a very social hostel, lots of activities to do and free dinner every night is a plus. Perfect for a solo traveller.
The air con is only turned on from 7pm-9am so it can get very hot in the rooms during the day and there’s nowhere to cool off. The activities with the hostel are quite expensive, you can definitely get them cheaper somewhere else.

Most importantly, the hospitality of staff , they also keeps the place suuuper clean, which is a very big asset for me personally! I look for no other place when I am back to the city and will undoubtedly recommend to others.

Verified reviewThe only saving grace is the good vibe created by fellow travelers, the parties were fun and the people we met were great.
The AC was broken when we arrived — it took 2 out of our 3 nights to “fix” it, and even then the room was hotter than outside. The staff didn’t take the issue seriously and made jokes when we tried to explain the problem — maybe because they were visibly high at the time. Or even worse, didn’t find any issue here. The shower broke on the first day and wasn’t fixed for 24 hours. They told us we’d get a proper discount for all the inconvenience, but at checkout the discount was barely 25% (which turned out to just be their low-season rate). Worse, they tried to charge us for late checkout after they themselves told us to leave our bags in the room while we went diving. Reception wasn’t even open before 10am. We had to push hard just to get a 35% discount. Overall, the facilities strongly need a refurbishment, the staff are unprofessional and mostly interested in drinking with guests and flirting with tourists. But compared to hostels in similar countries (e.g. Masaya in Colombia), it’s three times the price for a third of the value. Would strongly not recommend. This place is a boulevard for the competition. Anyone opening a half-decent hostel nearby would crush it.

We are incredibly apologetic that the AC and shower issue was not sorted as seen fit in your time scale. As we politely explained you, we had tried to fix the AC however you had locked the door and didn’t grant us access to the room during your stay. We can assure you that our facilities are of good standard and it was more of a misfortune that you happened to break the tap. In regards to your experience with our staff, I can assure you they were not high as you suggest. We have a designated member of staff responsible for guest experience who you may have seen drinking with guests. Our staff are closely monitored and well trained so we will investigate this matter. Additionally, we did discount you 50% off of your room rate, just not off your drinks tab. Verified reviewThe staff is great and plenty of activities are organised. You are sure to socialise and meet some cool people. The dorms are reasonably clean. The location is absolutely perfect.
There is no option to rent bicycles or motorbikes. Also, the staff took away the AC remote control for whatever reason (energy saving?) which was inconvenient anytime one wants to change the temperature or simply put the AC on.

Verified reviewRooms are big, with A/C and fan, bathroom is also big. It has lockers inside the room. Staff is nice, friendly and helpful. I stayed in low season so it was very quiet.
There’s no possibility of having breakfast there.

The place is dirty and it's super noisy. You have A/C but they don't allow you to have the remote control in the room. They regulate the temperature and leave. Indeed, the A/C is only open from 7pm to 9am. The rest of the day the room is super warm. Don't expect too much.

Verified reviewGood place to meet people. Comfortable common area were you can order breakfast, family dinner and drinks. Family dinner was very good! Spacious private room with AC. They offer trips and activities. Staff very friendly.
Over all, there were some things that could be better maintained. Coffee machine was broken throughout our stay. While they promised to fix it, I don't really believe it was their priority. Same applied to the free bicycles. The activities are promoted heavily and the price/quality is not particularly great. But not particularly bad either, as this is the case in all of Trincomalee.
