How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

This was the worst and most disgraceful hotel experience of my life. What is advertised as a “resort” is pure deception – we were placed in crumbling, filthy rooms outside the hotel grounds, across a public road infested with stray dogs. The conditions were beyond unacceptable: cockroaches, ant nests, geckos, and gecko droppings on the bedsheets every single day. The sheets were ripped and filthy, the furniture broken, and there was thick dirt and dust under the beds. It was impossible to feel safe or clean in such an environment. The swimming pool was dangerous – three children cut their feet on broken tiles. Out of the two rooms we paid for, one was so horrific we could not use it, leaving it empty. We are a family of four with two children, and all of us ended up sleeping together in one room because the kids were terrified by the state of the other. I contacted the manager directly, offering a fair solution: pay only for one night and refund the rest, or at least return 50% so we could move elsewhere. He never replied. Even Booking.com tried to contact the hotel to reach an agreement, but the hotel refused. This place is not just bad – it is a scam, a health hazard, and a humiliation for anyone booking in good faith. Avoid this disgraceful property at all costs.
You booked Garden Side rooms but insisted on Restaurant Side rooms, which were already fully booked. When we showed you the Garden Side rooms at check-in, you did not complain and agreed to stay. Only after going to Arugambay town did you return, saying mainly that our rooms were “too expensive” compared to cheaper places you had seen. After the first night, you requested to change one room, and we accommodated this immediately. Beyond that, you never raised a single complaint during the rest of your three-night stay, nor at check-out. If all these extreme issues you now describe were true, why did you not bring them up while you were here? Other guests before, during, and after your stay never had any such complaints. Your review is clearly exaggerated to damage our reputation because we did not refund you after you decided you could find “cheaper rooms.” Future guests can read the many genuine reviews alongside our replies and see the truth.

Verified reviewWe stayed at Paper Moon Kudils for 10 nights and really enjoyed our time here. The accommodation is simple and comfortable — the bungalows are a bit dated but perfectly fine for sleeping, especially since we spent most of our time outdoors soaking in the stunning natural surroundings. The location has beautiful views of the beach and has a swimming pool. It’s a great spot to relax, swim, and explore the area. Getting around was super easy with tuk tuks always on hand to take us into Arugam Bay within minutes. What really stood out was the staff — incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help. They went out of their way to accommodate any request and made our stay feel relaxed and easy. If you're looking for a laid back beach stay with great service and a beautiful setting this is a great choice.

Verified reviewI booked a triple room at Paper Moon Kudils Hotel and was extremely disappointed with the quality and service. The room had only one small bottle of water for three people, which is unacceptable. The air conditioner didn’t work properly, making it very uncomfortable. The bathroom only had a small bar of soap – no shampoo, no other essentials. The bed was broken, and there were dirty clothes left in the room, which shows a serious lack of cleanliness. I even saw a cockroach, which was disgusting and unacceptable in any hotel. The breakfast was very poor – just two slices of bread and an omelet, with no juice, tea, or coffee. Overall, the experience was terrible. The hotel does not offer the basic standards expected for the price. I would not recommend staying here unless major improvements are made

You had a full breakfast including curries, not just “two slices of bread and an omelet” as you now claim. At check-in, you complained about the room location, but as shown at the time of booking, only two rooms were available – one in the Restaurant Side and one in the Garden Side – and all other rooms were already booked. You received the available room exactly as booked. On check-out, you accused our staff of stealing your shoes and verbally abused them. Despite this, our team spent more than one and a half hours searching everywhere for your shoes, only for you to later find them in your locked car. We reminded you that many nationalities stay here, leaving their belongings openly, and in all our years, we have never had such an accusation. Other guests stayed before and after your visit without any such complaints – their reviews speak for themselves.

We would like to clarify the facts of your booking and stay. When you first made the booking, you mentioned you were living here and wanted a “Sri Lankan” local rate. We clearly explained that we do not discriminate and our rates are the same for all guests. When the system attempted to charge your credit card, it was declined, and we sent you a message, but we received no response. Booking.com informed us we could cancel your booking due to the invalid card, but as a courtesy, we called you. We were fully booked and had many walk-in guests we had to turn away. You told us you would check in at 3:30 PM, and at that time again requested a “Sri Lankan” rate, which we declined for the same reason. If you didn’t like the property, you could have chosen not to stay, as you had not paid until check-in. Instead, you stayed but continued to complain during your stay about the rate and that we were “rude” about payment. If you had entered the correct credit card details from the start, there would have been no need to contact you. Please write the truth about your experience rather than finding fault with the property, especially when the main issue was that you were not getting the special rate you wanted. Other guests before your stay have had no such complaints, as can be seen in their reviews.

They need to do some thorough clean up. Inside the cabins as well as outside the grounds. This was the most expensive stay we have had so far during our Sri Lanka road trip. But the service was the lowest quality.

However, we’re surprised by your comments regarding cleanliness and service, especially since you extended your stay with us, which would not make sense if you truly found the place unclean or the service poor. You paid US$68 per night for a room-only booking, yet we provided free breakfast, tea, coffee, and bottled water for both of you throughout your stay, at no extra cost. We did this with genuine hospitality and without being asked. Even more importantly, you never mentioned any dissatisfaction during your stay or when you checked out. If you had, we would have immediately addressed your concerns. Other guests stayed at the same time and shared glowing reviews. Our two young children had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful grounds and spent countless hours swimming in the pool, which we also thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was inviting, and it felt like a home away from home. The staff at Paper Moon were truly wonderful—warm, friendly, and attentive to our needs. Every morning, we were greeted with smiles and treated to a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast that set the tone for a great day ahead. While this isn’t a luxury escape, the facilities were clean and tidy, with excellent air conditioning that was a lifesaver on hot days. We appreciated the lovely open social areas, allowing us to spend quality time together as a family without disturbing other guests. Overall, we loved our stay at Paper Moon and would definitely come back again! Highly recommended for families looking for a relaxing getaway.

Verified reviewWe spent two weeks at Paper Moon and would like to share the following: LOCATION & ACCOMODATION Located directly next to Whisky Point Beach, this beautiful resort offers a very comfortable accomodation for travelers, who don’t want to stay in the center of Arugam Bay with all its bars, restaurants and busy tourist areas. Yes, there are not as many restaurant options in the area as in Arugam Bay and you may have to take a TukTuk to town if you wish to have that. The rooms are reasonably sized, comfortable, airconditioned and offer a very large bathroom. The surrounding area is peaceful and quiet. WIFI is fast and works in most areas. The pool area lies next to the beach, with enough shady spots under the palm trees to relax on one of the sunbeds. The closest surf spot is Pottuvil point, about a 15 minute walk on the beach. STAFF & SERVICE The whole staff of the resort is kind, very attentive, always friedly and available at any time. The resort team make sure that you feel well and cared for 24 hours a day. We never received a “no“ to any of our requests. Whether you need your laundry done, any extras for your room or a TukTuk-ride to Arugam Bay - Raja and his team will take care of it. HYGIENE & CLEANING The rooms were clean and well prepared upon arrival. Towels and bedsheets are changed every 5 days or upon request. Room cleaning also takes place every 5 days or upon request. Yes, you will find the occational bug or gecko in your room - you are staying in a very natural area of Sri Lanka (you may even see elephants in the area). Yes, you will encounter some crows or stray dogs in the restaurant & pool area - it is simply part of living in such an area. If you‘re looking for a luxurious 5-Star experience with daily room service and without having to lift a finger - you may want to book somewhere else. FOOD The restaurant offers good local food as well as some „western“ options.

The restaurant served delicious food at very reasonable prices. The pool area was amazing and just steps away from the beach! 🏝️ But what truly made our stay unforgettable was the staff. Everyone was incredibly kind and went above and beyond to meet our needs, especially Mr. Raja, who took care of us like a father. We’ll definitely be coming back! ❤️
