How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Bentota itself, I'm not sure you would want to remain for longer than a night or two.

There was no hot water

The bathroom mixer taps do need to be set in the middle position to provide hot water, and we understand this can be confusing at times. They need to be more attentive to cleanness, there was a dead cockroach in my room and the kettle was old and had stains inside. After asking the staff to turn on the water boiler, there was no hot water for shower.

Upon investigating, we found that what appeared to be a cockroach was actually a large moth, which can sometimes enter when the balcony doors are left open, as they are attracted to the light. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. Regarding the hot water, our solar system operates automatically, and after checking, we discovered the shower mixer tap had been turned towards the cold-water side. We will remind our team to carefully check this in the future to ensure our guests do not face similar issues. Our fridge did Not work and we had Problems with the AC in one Room (we booked two rooms). The Railway is only a few meters from. The hotel, so you can hear the train

Verified reviewThe rooms are nice and spacious with AC. The property has a good restaurant and is a 5-minute walk to the beach. The WIFI is decent, managed to make a couple work video calls with no issue; The breakfast is decent. and the property accepts card payments.

Verified reviewI loved staying at Esprit. It's a great location, very close to the beach; you can even hear the sea when it is quiet at night. The balcony, which is a good size, has a lovely view of the trees, which is great for bird and squirrel watching if you're a nature lover like me. The restaurant downstairs serves great food and cocktails and all the staff are very helpful, especially the manager Suresh and his senior member of staff Asala, who both went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible.
I have no complaints.

Verified reviewThe accommodation was great, with a good sized room and balcony to sit out on. The staff members were very friendly and always ready with a smile. The breakfast was reasonable with egg, toast and fruit and an extra different dish each morning. Enough to keep you going. We also liked the location as it was a quick and easy walk to the beach. We enjoyed our three nights here.
WiFi was hit and miss but we had data so didn't have to rely on it.

Verified reviewWe had a wonderful stay at Esprit Bentota! The rooms were the best we stayed in during our time in Sri Lanka—spacious, modern, and very comfortable. Everything felt quite new, with excellent air conditioning and a well-maintained bathroom. The hotel’s location is also great, just about 200 meters from the beach. What truly made our experience special was the amazing staff. They were incredibly helpful, assisting us with everything we needed and making us feel welcome throughout our stay.

Verified reviewFruit is served for breakfast, and it's wonderful. Toast with jam. You can choose from scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs, fried eggs. The portion consists of one small egg, and this is the first time I've seen such a large dish during my travels. The location of the hotel is good. Everything is within walking distance.
The hotel has its own seafood restaurant. The food is tasteless, the portions are small relative to other restaurants, the prices are too high, the traffic is low and due to this there is no confidence in the freshness of the products. When choosing to book, it was one of the key factors that turned out to be wrong on the spot. The receptionists do not solve any issue, but call the general manager, taxi manager, etc. To resolve the issue, you need to wait for something all the time.
Thanks a lot for your feedback and not sure what has happened with the breakfast and other orders and we are currently investigating the shared feedback internally, our breakfast is usually lot more tgan that as we also have Sri lanksnn food items accompanying the said breakfast now, also with our seafood we take pride in serving the fresh locally caught seafood by fisherman in the local neighborhood to maintain the freshness ratherthan bulk buying farm prdoced seafood that are served in other restaurants also we use high quality ingredients to make our food, it is good to try our food during the stay as it is hard to provide feedback by just looking at the menu
