How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewIt was exceptional. Truly wonderful. The villa, the family and the value for money were amazing. The villa is new, only opened in March, and it is really comfortable. So well presented, spotlessly clean and equipped to a really high standard. So many lovely touches. I’ve never stayed in a place that provides seven different adaptors in case guests have forgotten their electrics. The bathroom has three different shower heads! The breakfasts are lovely and huge portions. It’s in a very quiet location but five minutes walk to restaurants. It’s dark at night but if that’s a concern tuk tuks only cost 500 rps. But what really stands out is the family. They are absolutely lovely. Kind and caring.

Verified reviewExcellent accommodation and very kind and helpful owners. The house was squeaky clean, with hot water and very good AC. As other reviewers also noted, the location is very convenient: tucked away from the noise of the main road but close enough to reach all the amenities in 5 mins on foot. On top, each day we had sumptuous breakfast on the terrace - would definitely recommend picking it for your stay in Sigiriya.

Verified reviewWe, a family of 4, have enjoyed our stay in this very comfortable and picturesque little villa very much! Sigiriya is a lovely place to stay for a couple of days and doing so practically in the backyard of our two very helpful hosts (and their cute little 1 year old son) has turned out to have been an excellent choice. Not only were they very responsive to all our questions and requests, also the fact that the male host was a parttime tuktuk driver was very helpful (especially on our first night on which we found walking the 500 meters to the lake in the dark still a bit challenging...). Breakfast was very nice and varied on each morning. Enjoying this on the porch was a very good way to start the day!
The lack of elephants in the backyard... 🙃

Verified reviewWe enjoyed our stay in the Dreamscape Villa. I pick some highlights here: - The room is new, very clean, and spacious. - The location is very calm, with walking peacocks and small lizards as a bonus. - The hosting family is very caring and willing to help.
No complains. Just few things to consider. We anticipated them from the location and photos before we arrived: - Calm location comes in hand with narrow and partially bumpy road which is dark in the night. - The AC worked perfectly, but as one bed was in a partially separated area of the room and there was no fan in that part, the temperature at the two beds differed.

Verified reviewThis is a quiet, spacious, and very dean cottage, right next to the family's fields. It feels incredibly nature here - we even saw wild peacooks walking around very close by! The entire family was so kind and welcoming. we arrived a bit late, but when we asked if dinner was possible, the host didnt hesitate and prepared a delicious and abundant local food for us. The host's dad is also a very skilled woodcarver. Thanks to the whole host family for the wonderful hospitality and care!

Verified reviewWe loved that the room was private, large, extremely clean, and also brand new. The location offered quiet peace within a 10 minute walk to restaurants. The family that owns the villa is incredibly kind and go above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay. Never before have I experienced such hospitality. The breakfasts that they serve are enormous and offer a wide array of delicious Sri Lanka food. We were planning to stay for only 1 night, but ended up staying for 3 because it was the perfect retreat space.
