How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewOur stay at The Beach Gate Villa was truly unforgettable. Sarath is the kindest host we met on our journey, and he made us feel like part of his own family. The breakfasts were simply the best of our entire trip, and the rooms were the cleanest and most well-equipped we had in Sri Lanka. We especially appreciated the large, comfortable beds, as not all double beds on the island are spacious enough for two. The villa itself has a beautiful terrace and garden, where we enjoyed watching birds and squirrels, and the peaceful location is just a few minutes’ walk from a quiet, empty beach. There are also plenty of activities nearby, such as a river safari in Bentota, an Indian restaurant, and a Buddhist shrine. We loved it so much that we extended our stay to four nights and were genuinely sad to leave.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review and kind words. We are truly delighted to hear that you felt at home with us and enjoyed your stay at The Beach Gate Villa. It was a great pleasure to host you, and we are happy that you appreciated our breakfasts, rooms, and the peaceful surroundings. Sarath and our team always try to make every guest feel like family, so your feedback means a lot to us. We are so glad you extended your stay and made such nice memories here. You will always be welcome back, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future. With warm regards, The Beach Gate Villa Team

Verified reviewReally nice family. Beautiful nature with colorful birds and squirrels. One of the best breakfasts in Sri Lanka.
Didn’t provide any soap or shower gel. Maybe should have asked but felt bad because we also requested towels which were not in the room…
Thank you

Verified reviewLovely hosts who prepare fresh breakfast every morning. The room is clean and cozy, equipped with AC, fan and mosquito net. You can relax on the terrace at any time of the day and watch nature. The beach is not far away and there are plenty of restaurants and shops. We would gladly stay again anytime, highly recommended.

Verified reviewSarath, Pearly and their daughter Sachini, not forgetting Sanju the 16 year old dashund are the most charming hosts. We travelled as two couples and were made to feel at home immediately. The guest rooms are on the upper floor, which we had to ourselves with a separate external staircase to access it. We also had use of the fridge in the kitchen at the rear which our delicious breakfasts were prepared in.each day. This is served on the spacious balcony surrounded by tropical trees which attract many species of beautiful birds, chipmonks and fruit bats, ,which is just about the best way we can think of to start the day. Both rooms had private bathrooms, one being ensuite and the other just outside the room, but not a problem at all. The beds were large and comfortable and there was plenty of space for storing our belongings. This was important to us because we'd been travelling around and this was our last base for 10 nights. It was great to finally be able to unpack everything and get organised. In addition to the access door each room also has double doors which open out onto the balcony too. The bathrooms are very clean with powerful separate shower cubicles. Location wise the Villa is positioned only a few hundred yards off the main Galle Road down a narrow side road, but it feels as though you're nowhere near to it as we couldn't hear any traffic noise at all. Continue down the lane past the villa, over the little bridge and meander down the various lanes you can take and within 10 minutes you'll find yourself at the beautiful Moragalla beach. This was our seventh trip to Sri Lanka and we've been fortunate enough to stay in some great places over the years but Beach Gate Villa is definitely in our favourites list. As far as value for money goes it has to be top. We will definitely be back on our next trip. Thank you guys for a wonderful stay x
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 see you soon

Verified reviewSpacious room with cozy bed, equipped with fan and AC, also mosquito net. No Wifi provided as stated, my sim card internet is working fine so it’s not bothering. The host is friendly and nice. The nearby beach is lovely with comparatively less tourists, but there’s not much shops or restaurants around the guesthouse.
I only stayed for one night so it’s acceptable
