the location is perfect, you are right at the top of the high street and can walk to everything. The lady who runs it speaks perfect English and is so sweet. She loves hosting and is really helpful. The breakfast was huge and really tasty. The rooms are dated but you are paying such a cheap price that you would expect that. You are paying for the location

A lovely guesthouse, simple and without frills, but comfortable and very welcoming. Sudha was especially helpful and warm! It's located by a tea estate, and is up in a steep hill, and though there's noise from the town bars, it's not disturbing. Breakfast was a joy: filling and tasty. A warm recommendation, especially if being near the station is required.

Amazing host family, we stayed for 5 nights and loved every part of it. One night we took the cooking class which we can highly recommend and we enjoyed cuddling with the cats. We got served the best breakfast we had in our whole trip and were so close to town. Definitely would come back!

We knew the rooms / bathrooms would be a little dated based on the photos and can’t fault them given the price.

Our two families adored our stay at Tunnel Gap for 4 nights. Sudha was so welcoming and spoke excellent English. She cooked us an incredible breakfast, gave us a cooking class, showed us around her garden and tea plantation, and made great recommendations for our trip. The kids loved playing with the 2 dogs, 5 cats and 2 kittens. The location was ideal - a 5 minute walk from the train and main street but quiet enough at night. No aircon but fans were comfortable for Ella’s cooler nights. Excellent value for money and a genuine home.

We loved staying here! The owner was so kind, welcoming us and making us feel like we were at home. She spoke flawless English too which was a bonus. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. We absolutely loved the animals here! They were all so friendly and the kittens are so cute. Can’t recommend this place enough and we would absolutely stay again if we come back :)

The room was humid. It is ok, but as we spent 2 days (almost) under the rain, our clothes couldn’t dry.

We stayed 2 nights. It was very nice for many reasons : 1) Located in the very center of Ella. So everything is easy : train station, restaurant, bar, gift shops … 2) The host was SO nice to us : kind, caring, gives good tips … 3) the breakfast was very good The room was pretty basic, but just what we expected for the price we have payed for.

Mosquito net was a bit fiddly to get round the bed. There's no air con but there is an electric fan unit but it's very noisy, having said that it's a bit cooler in the evenings in Ella compared to other areas we've been to so we were quite comfortable without it.

As many people have said before me, lovely friendly host, did us a complementary pot of tea and some toast, jam and fruit one afternoon, also advised places to go. So close to the train station and city centre, great, peaceful location. I would come back here.

Our stay at this guesthouse was simply amazing! From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed and perfectly taken care of. The host is an absolute gem—so kind, attentive, and always ready to help with anything we needed. The location couldn’t be better! Just a short walk from the train station, which made arriving and departing incredibly easy. No long walks with heavy luggage—just a few steps, and you’re there! And the breakfast… wow! Hands down the best we had during our entire trip in Sri Lanka. Everything was fresh, delicious, and made with so much love. It was the perfect way to start the day! The rooms were spotless, the beds super comfortable, and the entire atmosphere of the guesthouse was cozy and welcoming. We felt at home from the very first moment. The location was perfect for us. Ella has a lot of tourists and this homestay is away from the noise and crowds of the town but is just a couple of mins walk to get to the Main Street. It’s also walking distance to the train station. There is a comfortable outdoor seating area, good wifi and a comfortable bed, with a cozy duvet.. We didn’t have time for breakfast but were offered complimentary tea in the morning. Our host went above and beyond for us when my husband forgot some medication at the guesthouse. She arranged for a driver to bring the medication to us the next day, 2 hours drive away. This saved us a lot of inconvenience.
