We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

FranceAccess is not very easy due to a rough road, but with a van or tuk-tuk it was not a problem.
Beautiful setting right in front of the ocean waves. Superb pool and amazing, well-maintained outdoor areas. Very comfortable room and one of the best bathrooms we had in Sri Lankan guesthouses. Although there is no air conditioning, the ceiling fans were more than enough for a good night’s sleep. Nice beaches nearby, and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was simple but tasty. We had an excellent stay.

United Kingdom.
Villa Lucky Star is situated in an unbelievable position between two lovely beaches and its atmosphere is one of calmness and beauty. Breakfast was superb with eggs, toast, tea or coffee and a huge plate of fresh fruit. They also do superb dinners to order with one of the best salads I have ever had. The swimming pool and its surroundings were also very beautiful. One final thing, the staff, especially the manageress Lisa, were more than helpful and to be highly commended.

South AfricaThe only issue is that it's far from the actual town of Tangalle but it's still close to Silent and Goyambokka beaches
Lovely rooms, comfy beds and a great place to just relax and enjoy the view. Breakfasts were great and we chose to eat dinner and the food was delicious.

BelgiumThe location of this hotel is simply breathtaking. Waking up with the sound of the waves and watching the sun going up is a perfect way to start your day. Cars and Tuk tuks are able to reach this hotel, but the last part of the road is not so comfortable as the road is not paved. The room was spacious. It is not the most modern one, but everything was very clean. 2 best beaches are in walking distance, just as restaurants and bars. The staff was very friendly and we fell very welcome. It was a little paradise.

United KingdomBeautiful location with amazing views, we had the place to ourselves and the staff were very helpful with whatever we needed. It was quiet at night and we booked the suite on the roof top which was great for late night drinks and cards under the stars. Excellent choice of beaches within walking distance and the evening meals were simple yet delicious. We couldn’t have asked for more.

SwitzerlandThe staff was super friendly and the stunning ocean view was usually only available in 5 star exclusive hotels. The location of the hotel is close to two beautiful beaches. Due to the monsoon influence, it was not suitable to swim in the sea. Enjoying the view in the hammock at the hotel was my favorite time of the stay. The room was spacious and comfortable, the breakfast was great, we enjoyed our stay very much.

United Arab EmiratesI wish there was an option for spicy food.
The place was stunningly beautiful. It is perched atop a bluff overlooking the ocean. The rooms balcony gave us privacy with a perfect view of the sunrise. The bed was comfortable and even though it is hot out we felt the fan gave us plenty of breeze to sleep comfortably. Lisa, the manager and her entire staff were kind and accommodating. The saltwater pool was so relaxing with the perfect temperature of water. The hammocks and lounge chairs were comfortable. The food was delicious, although not as spicy as most Sri Lankan food. Even the morning coffee was plentiful and delicious. There are two beaches within walking distance. One is very close and the other a bit farther. Even with rough waves we were able to swim at one. And all of this with the sounds of the ocean breaking on the rocks.

NetherlandsDespite the romantic setting of the villa, there were some personal downsides. The breakfast offered is included but very basic and not diverse, different from what we experienced in the rest of Sri Lanka. Other breakfast options are, however, offered at additional cost (a.o.pancakes, extra egg, fruit juice). This felt a little cheap. Another example that put us off is that a simple bottle of water cost twice as much as in a local shop. This did not felt very welcomming. It would have been more friendly and sustainable if a water dispencer was in place. Dinner offered was only non-spicy "sri lankan" or simple "western" food. Great if you don't like spicy food, otherwise eat out in one of the nearby local restaurants. If you book a room in this Villa, expect European hospitality.
When you want to stay around Tangalle to visit the beautiful Goyambokka beach (8 min walk) and Silent beach (15 min walk) this Villa is situated in the best location! It can get really hot and humid in Tangalle, but since the Villa Lucky Star is situated on top of a rock the wind is always blowing and this makes staying here very comfortable. No problems with flies and mosquitos as a bonus. The rooms of the villa are classic and of good size. The room was cleaned daily. The bed was super comfy with a good working ceiling fan and light musquito net. It is great falling asleep and waking up with the sound of breaking waves. The saltwater pool was big and had a nice temperature. The pool was in great condition and cleaned every day. Next to the pool is a little grass area with some hammocks and sun beds overlooking the Indian Ocean.

CanadaWhat a fantastic stay we had! Our room was spacious and cleaned quickly and efficiently each morning. The breakfast outside in the cabana with the wind blowing was superb! Our room had an outdoor daybed, hammock, bathtub, shower, toilet, table etc and we used it all each day. We also asked if we could rent a scooter and they had it brought to the villa for a very fair price. The grounds and pool all were just wonderful. The location is perfect nestled between two fantastic beaches that are just a few minutes walk away. Lisa who manages the villa is extremely personable and helpful and the other staff were very pleasant as well. I had a fever one night and Lisa brought me tea and checked my wellbeing a few times. All around great stay! I’d highly recommend Lucky Star!

NetherlandsWhen we arrived with our driver( who was the nicest guy you could meet) he was told by the hotel staff he couldn't use the toilet, and much to our horror had to pee in the back yard. When we informed him of our hotel choice enroute, he already knew of the place as he had dropped guests there before and had not had a warm feeling. Lisa also referred to him in a derogatory way. We were embarassed as he was so kind and had been with us for 2.5 weeks. It was a pity. Lastly, this hotel needs air conditioning. It was absolutely boiling at night in the room. There is a fan over the bed, but the mosqito net is too thick, so no air comes through. At the very least, the mosquito nets need to be changed. The current ones also don't reach the ground. It was beginning of April, so maybe other times of the year are a bit cooler, but it was almost impossible to sleep. We also spoke to another couple at breakfast and they also couldn't sleep. I understand it is very expensive, but then the windows should be altered, so they can open properly and then a breeze comes in. This hotel could be absolutely amazing if some money was invested in it.
Great hotel on the coast, set inbetween 2 lovely beaches. The first night we stayed for dinner and that was fantastic. I had the Sri Lankan curry option and my partner the roast chicken, both were delicious. So much so that we wanted to eat there the following night, but at breakfast the waiter told us there was no cook that day and there was only one dinner option which was chicken fried rice, so we were disappointed, but decided to decline and eat somewhere else. However, on arriving back that night we could see people eating and after asking the manager Lisa, the cook was working, so we could have eaten there after all. This was a bit annoying as my partner was not that well after having an accident a few days earlier. Additionally, the waiting staff were pushing us the first night to have dinner at 6.30pm, which is very early. They obviously wanted to finish early. We ended up agreeing on 7pm, but really we wanted to eat around 7.30/8pm. The food is very good though. There is a very nice saltwater pool and the garden is lovely. The view is amazing and the verandah of our room was perfect. There was a sofa, kettle and candles and you can hear the waves all day and night long. It is a very beautiful, relaxing place, but needs a bit of investment.

United StatesWe loved staying at Villa Lucky Star, and if (when!) we get back to Tangalle we will happily stay there again. The only improvement I can think of would be having a screen in one of the 2 large windows in the room we had. You could then leave the window open at night to let in even more of that lovely sea-breeze.
After a month traveling in north & central Sri Lanka we headed to the beach. Villa Lucky Star was the perfect guesthouse for us. It is not a fancy place; there is nothing fussy, coldly upscale, or overdone about it. It is just the perfect place for an easy-going beach holiday. Our room (#8) was on the 2nd floor. It was simple, clean, & pleasant, with a large comfortable bed, a cooling cement floor, a long rack for hanging clothing, a table & 2 chairs, 2 bedside tables, a ceiling fan, and best of all, a balcony with the most tranquil, beautiful view over lush gardens, swaying palm trees, a rocky outcrop, gorgeous sea, and a pretty pool. Honestly, it was a movie-perfect view. On the balcony were chairs, table & a cushioned bench. The bed had a net but we didn’t use it as the breeze kept the mosquitoes away. We kept the balcony door open & screen door locked at night. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves & waking to the distant call of peacocks: Nothing could have been more perfect. The shower had plenty of hot water & the shower lip & curtain kept the rest of the bathroom from getting wet. The salt-water pool was refreshing & great to laze about in the late afternoon. VLS is located between 2 beaches: Goyambokka Beach is an easy walk & is a wide, lovely beach with a few simple restaurants for cold drinks. Silent Beach is also beautiful but longer to walk to. Eat on the patio or in a covered pavilion looking out over the sea. Excellent food. Breakfast included a pot of tea or coffee, yogurt w/honey & cereal sprinkles, juice, eggs, toast, & a pretty fruit platter. We highly recommend the Prawns in Coconut (comes with 5 or 6 small dishes) for dinner. Refrigerator & honor system for cold drinks at night. The manager, Lisa, & her team (especially Tisolet) were absolutely The Best: thoughtful, kind, & helpful. Villa Lucky Star is for people who want a lovely, calm, relaxing place to stay.
