How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe had a lovely stay here! The whole family is absolutely welcoming and the room is very comfortable. We stayed for five nights and really wish we could have stayed more. The village is beautiful and quiet. The house is very spacious and a ten-minute walk to the lake. We cooked dinner with our hosts twice, it was great to learn about the recipes of the delicious curries :) We also organized a yoga class in their living room and they were super chill about it. Thank you so much :)
Thank you so much

Verified reviewWe stayed here for two nights. The location is good, in the middle of Sigiriya village and the place is quite quiet and peaceful. We had a local breakfast and dinner at the homestay which tasted delicious. The owner is very nice and warm, although it was a little difficult to communicate sometimes due to the language. Overall we are very happy with our short stay here.
Thank you so much

Verified review1. Very affordable homestay, in a safe and calm area, yet still close to many restaurants (10min) and Lion Rock (30min walk). 2. It’s a real homestay, so you get to meet the entire family at some point which was nice, as I got to see up and close how people live together in Sri Lanka. 3. Upon arriving, I got a welcome drink and was offered a welcome dinner. Breakfast was included, so I could choose when it was served. Breakfast contained eggs, pancakes, coffee/tea and pieces of fruit. 4. In addition, I had a moment where it was unsafe for me to walk around in town, so they came and picked me up, free of charge. As a female solo traveler, this one really counts! They truly care about their guests. 5. The transportation they offer, is also fairly priced, so to me they were really being fair & honest, as that’s not something you find everyday in Sri Lanka. They also offered me a donations-based cooking class as they wanted to show their culture.
I thought long and hard about if I were to write the below because I find it to be minor, easy-to-fix improvements, but I do feel compelled to share my story. What I believe can be improved: 1. The bathroom sink and toilet were leaking, so the bathroom was often a tiny pool. That didn’t really bother me so much, but just so you know. 2. It’s a real homestay and the eldest daughter and son-in-law have a restaurant, meaning the family can be up late. Family gatherings at 1:30am were happening. 3. Due to the family situation, the son-in-law was sleeping in the living room. All fine by me, but he didn’t wake up when his alarm went off. I woke him up 3 times in as many hours, to turn off his alarm. If you’re a light sleeper like me, this can be a bit upsetting, especially as he also didn’t get up when the first alarm went off (6am). 4. After I had left, the youngest daughter asked me if I could buy her an iPhone… That was a real bummer to an otherwise pleasant stay. I’m not even sure if her mom, who is the main host for 16 years (!), is aware… These kind of shenanigans have the potential to really hurt their homestay. All in all, the stay was truly more than affordable, so I’d go back as they were really sweet, caring & accommodating. As I said, easily fixable with a conversation, so don’t let my experience discourage you.

Verified reviewOverall, the stay was fine, and the staff was very helpful. The room could have been cleaned more thoroughly. We had an issue with the power supply, which kept cutting out, making it difficult to get ready for our journey early in the morning without electricity or the ability to charge our phones. The food was excellent.

Verified reviewWe were greeted with ice cream and a soda concoction, similar to a Coke Float, which was delightful. Then we were served with a welcome lunch which was the best salad we’ve ever had and delicious, warm coconut roti with water. The room was small but comfortable enough. It’s close enough to Sigirya rock and bus stop. We did the free cooking class which was essentially a demo of the host cooking and explaining what she was doing in limited English and us watching and writing down the recipe and ingredients which were unlikely to use… still, dinner was very nice and HUGE! However, the salt content these people use is astonishing but we’ve come to learn that’s Sri Lankan cuisine. The next morning we were asked for breakfast at 8am, prepared for a morning of exploring a different part of Sri Lanka and unfortunately woke up at 1pm to the host knocking on the door and seeing my naked body as she opened the door wondering why we hadn’t gone to breakfast five hours ago. She was very sweet and gave us breakfast straight away. When leaving, we got offered a private taxi for a decent price although the sale was a bit hard as the host’s husband warned us of drug trafficking and scamming tourists… she then tried to overcharge us but we’ve had that in every home stay and Booking.com Is in dollars and they use their own conversion rate. Needless to say, was all resolved in the end and would definitely recommend!

Verified reviewIf you’re looking for an authentic stay in the jungle, this is absolutely perfect. We loved the location as only a short walk to Lions Rock and there was loads of restaurants nearby. The hosts were also so friendly and a pleasure to stay with. They were super accommodating and made us delicious lunches and dinners, some of the best Sri Lankan food we’ve had so far. We even did an at home cooking class with the family which was a great experience.
Quite a few mosquitos around the area but that can’t be helped. Just wear your bug spray! 😊

Verified reviewLovely Family. Nice welcome lunch & breakfasts. Good location. Good value for money.
WiFi not great but doesn’t seem to be much in Sri Lanka, told cooking class was free but has to pay for dinner after without being told the price beforehand

Verified reviewHost was lovely, warm and welcoming. We stayed in both rooms with our group and were both comfortable, clean bathrooms. Food was delicious and she does a free cooking class as well. Slight language barrier but wasn’t an issue. Short walk into town with plenty of restaurants nearby. She runs a minimart on site & will do washing as well. Would highly recommend.
Nothing, we loved our stayed.

Verified reviewLoved our stay at Village Feel! The host family is absolutely lovely, very helpful, kind and friendly. We ate some of the most delicious meals of our whole stay in Sri Lanka here. They also helped us organise well priced transport to Polonnaruwa and a safari to Minneriya. They also offer free cooking classes! We felt very at home here and one day hope to come back. Highly recommend staying here for an amazing stay in Sigiriya.

Verified reviewThe property is very nice and well located near Sigirya Rock. Next to the house, there is a quiet street with a few restaurants. The first night we had dinner in the house, prepared by the owner of the pension: it was typical Sri Lankan food, generous portion and very tasty. The room was big, with air conditioning and clean. The bathroom was also very big. Be aware you’re in the nature, so there might be some insects in the room, but nothing to worry about.
Around 7 pm the toilet seemed to have a pressure issue and water wasn’t coming out. But an hour later it was perfectly coming out again Aside from that, all was very good.
Thank you so much

Verified reviewEverything was clean and the family that owns this property was so lovely! They welcomed us with free juices and cookies. The traditional Sri Lankan breakfast was one of the best I‘ve ever had in Sri Lanka!! They also invited us to a free cooking class, just amazing! We also met their son, who owns a city tour & taxi services and he helped us out a lot!! He arranged transport, Safari and Train Tickets for us and everything for a good price! Would definitely come back again, thank you so much!! 🫶🏼
In the afternoon we could hear a bit of the music from the place next door, but it wasn’t too loud and they stopped playing when we went to bed
Thank you so much 😊

We decided to eat dinner there on the first night and they gave us a full cooking demo of everything they were making - incredible! and the food was the best Sri Lankan food we have had in Sri Lanka! AC in the rooms worked well also! breakfast was great too!

Verified reviewWe had a great stay here. The beds were extremely comfortable and there was air conditioning. Although there were some language barriers, which made it a bit harder and slightly more awkward to communicate, the host family was very kind and helpful. She did our laundry and we could help cooking for free. The food was really good, we especially liked the jackfruit curry. Location is convenient, 20/30 min walk to the Lion rock, way less if you go by tuck tuck. There are many restaurants, and workshops (wood, metals) nearby. Great stay, thanks a lot!
Thank you so much
