Quirky but charming hotel on the sea wall in the old town. Personal preference is to stay in The Capitainerie rather than L’église. Evening meal was delicious . Friendly staff

The decoration is absolutely original and dramatic and makes you feel immersed in a WWII Hollywood production - both the Church and Capitainnerie buildings are a touristic attraction in themselves. The food is correct but not outstanding and the choice is not very wide - the F&B as a whole does not match the sophistication of the decor.

For a longer stay the breakfast could be a bit more deversified.

The old style in an original ancient house, situated inside the old town, directly on the town wall was beautiful and special. The hotel is small with only a handful of rooms. So it's never overcrowded. And the staff was kind and friendly. The breakfast tasty and enough.

in the church building there is no reception nor breakfast (you have to walk 100m to the main building). You have dust everywhere even inside the rooms and the heating system was not working.

the experience to sleep in a transformed old church is really interesting. Staff very helpful and friendly.

The bed was a little hard for me, but that was all.

I was concerned at first that the hotel was located within the Portuguese Centre, but this made it even more charming. The staff were lovely, the breakfast and dinner were excellent - I would recommend the fish! Our room was simple but adequate and we enjoyed our stay.

There is no Air Conditioning, therefore it is not possible to stay there in summer. I cancelled the booking at arrival because it was +35c outside and +37c in the room. The stuff has confirmed that there is no any cancellation fee and that they sent a message to Booking.com. However, the message was not sent, and the Booking.com still charged for the stay. It is too hot to stay there in summer. Yet, in winter it must be beautiful.

Th idea of the hotel is great. But there is no Air Conditioning, therefore it is not possible to stay there in summer.

Location is terrible, gives into a parking lot in the medina, lots of weird people around at night. Very smelly.

The church is lovely. Rooms are large. Restaurant is nice. Parking lot in front.

Because of the good reviews and the price of 200€ per night for a Deluxe Suite, we had high expectations. My boyfriend and I have both travelled a lot and stayed in many types of accommodations, but we’ve never experienced this before. The price/quality ratio is shocking. I cannot believe they dare to ask 200€ per night for this stay. I will explain why. The Unesco listed Portuguese Citadel is completely derelict and anywhere you look you see garbage. The Cisternes are closed for renovation. The Church building (L’Iglesia) is not in use, only the Capitainerie. We were allowed to look inside and everything in this beautiful building is under a layer of dust, leaves on the floor and the lights were off. Since the Capitainerie is in use, the main areas were clean and looked nicely decorated. Upstairs the massage table was shoved in a corner with a layer of dust on the cushions and the same counted for the cushions on the rooftop terrace. They weren’t cleaned for a long time. When we entered our room, we were welcomed with a musty smell, due to the combination of fifties vintage furniture, high humidity and the fact that there was no aircon! Besides the lack of airconditioning, there was also no safe, fridge or tv. The room was huge, but the bed was a Queensize. We specifically booked the expensive room, because on Booking.com it said that the Deluxe Suite had an ‘extra large bed’. This is false information. The receptionist confirmed to us that all rooms had the same size bed. The bedframe was very shaky and therefor my boyfriend slept on the sofa for 2 nights. The housekeeping staff did not make up the sofa bed, even though it was clear it had been used. We had to request extra sheets and I ended up making up the bed myself. They also didn’t notice one of the bedlamps was broken and just left it on the floor. The room was very noisy and the music in the foyer loud, we had to ask for it to be turned down.

The friendliness of the staff and the strong shower. The staff was friendly and polite. Housekeeping not very attentive though(see below) and the receptionist did not help us get our money back after we complained and left after 2 bad nights. We booked 4 initially. He referred us to Booking.com, Booking.com referred us back to the owner of the accomodation. We ended up calling 3x times before we finally got just a little money back from Booking.com. The owner of L’Iglesia just never responded.

Prepare yourself to indulge inside the property. At night we lazed on the rooftop and picked out the neon green minarets marking the multiple mosques. Outside the property is an exploration of local el jadida. We watched the catch come in from the breakwaters. Friendly fishermen. But the area was limited. Honestly it was all we needed and hotel l’iglese made relaxing in the environment worth every minute.

If setting and design spark your fancy, Hotel L’Iglesia will be a Moroccan treat. Set behind old fort walls and beneath red-stone ramparts, this tucked away hotel transports one to that French Moroccan aesthetic seen in your favorite design magazines. Brushes of art deco with flourishes of craftsman tile (we can never get enough), the flash of gold, russet, or crimson, brimming from the beautiful floor rugs, the encased antique satchels, the bookcase of rusted tea grinders, wood fishing boats docked askew in the gravel courtyard where we ate dinner within ancient Portuguese fort walls all created this fantastical setting for our stay. The food was delicious thanks to the wonderful woman cook. From the moment Hamza received us inside we felt sincerely welcomed. He served us mint tea and then filled the courtyard with serenading guitar ballads (an awesome playlist). Breakfast was delicious and we took it in the treś chic dining area, sitting on white 60s egg chairs to accompany the ornate iron and glass topped tables. The eye’s gaze never failed to land on a fitting, delighting detail. Touring their second building a stones throw away, the church, sets your imagination to return, bringing all your friends for a Hendricks-burrows type bacanal, though maybe forfeit the heroin addiction and just focus on good times, good folk, gentle, lovely Morocco.

Room was clean, tidy and spacious. We didn't stay in the actual church (our room was in next building), but were allowed to visit it. It was beautiful.

I can’t find any negative sides to this place, except perhaps some rather noisy kids playing football till late at night outside the hotel.

Exquisite interior of a former Portuguese church dating from 1700s. Imagine staying in a museum. Wow, really a great place to be. I liked the cuisine and very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is located in the Medina next to city walls with spectacular views of the ocean. I can only recommend this hotel.
