Mounaim, the resident manager, was very helpful and kind and gave us a lovely welcome. He provided me with mint tea when I was ill in my room, found us a hairdryer (not available at the Riad) and walked with us to find our taxi to the airport. He was always available. The Riad is very well located.

The Riad is in need of updating. We were in the Royal Suite where the bathroom cupboard door was hanging off its hinges and part of the bath panel was flapping about. The Riad's boiler does not produce enough hot water for all the rooms and the Riad is very cold. The heaters in our suite were only switched on when we were taken to our cold rooms. The so-called Royal suite, had a rickety metal spiral staircase to the twin bedded space. Neither twin bed had a bedside light. There appear to be three toilets downstairs, one without a fixed door, one without a basin and the one with a basin had no soap nor towel. I noticed that in one of them the door frame was rotted. Bearing in mind these problems this Riad is way overpriced. One review mentioned the provision of toiletries. I hardly think 2cm of horrid soap and a satchet of shampoo counts as provision of toiletries.

    Property response:

Dear Sue, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted that you have stayed at the Riad Youssef. We are sorry that you were sick during your stay. It must have affected your perception of things and probably been difficult for you. We will try to provide some answers to your remarks, especially regarding the staircase of the Royal Suite that would be "Rickety" (sometimes fever can give the impression that objects are moving), know that a security commission visits us once a year and this staircase, be certain, is robust and is in no way wobbly . During your stay the temperature of Fez was between 20 and 25 degrees the day, all our rooms are equipped with radiators in free use by our guests, at their convenience . The desired temperature in the room depends on each traveller. We have fluid inertia heating that heats a suite in 30 to 45 minutes . So, should we know before you arrive that you would be ill? Same for hot water it is produced in sufficient quantity by solar panels and we have never had a concern of hot water . I must admit that we are very surprised by these remarks, which are very far from the reality . Finally, as for the soap sorry that the quantity was not sufficient, we take your comment into account in order to correct this problem . It is true that this is a traditional, authentic guest house, for which our travelers appreciate both the beauty of the mosaics and woodwork and the Moroccan craftsmanship as the imperfections related to more than 4 centuries of history of these houses, We are constantly striving to renovate and improve. We try to offer authenticity, conviviality, comfort and have no claim to propose anything else. Finally, I am sorry that the request for payment of your stay on arrival at our establishment as it is done in all hotel establishments in the world, you have to this point upset, Morocco is no exception to this rule. Best regards. RIAD YOUSSEF

Great central location close to Blue Gate and in the middle of the Medina, yet away from noise. Easy to find. Quiet Riad with good breakfast. Very friendly staff, who are good with kids. Heaters available for in-room heating and in the breakfast hall (we were there late December). Kids were allowed to watch TV (Netflix) on the communal TV anytime they/we needed a break. Authentic Riad.

Some mix up with the rooms initially, which was resolved the second night. Couldn't pay by card as the card reader was broken. The large family room we had (Azize) was indeed very spacious and has one separating door inside, but the single beds are in an area that is not sealed off from the hallway (there is a decorative hole in the wall above the entry door, which means air and noise travel freely between the apartment and the staircase). The shower took 20 minutes to become lukewarm, which then lasted for about 10 minutes. Toilet leaked water. Carpets didn't seem to be cleaned (certainly not daily). We had similar issues at other Riads (partially related to old houses), so I would say again, a very authentic riad.

The Riad is beautiful, with good location, the room quite big and the breakfast was really good. The staff is really helpful, they always try their best to satisfy any request (we asked for more towels, a heater and a head dryer and all was promptly given to us).

Nothing to flag about the property. I would only suggest checking in advance the payment method with the staff, since we were requested to pay in cash at the property and weren’t aware of it before.

this is a very badly maintained dirty property. the bathroom was in a horrible condition, the carpets had holes and at night I saw spiders. basically there is zero care given to this facility. we instead found an amazing luxury Riad the next day after walking out from here. unfortunately this Riad is a scam.

the property has broken bathroom fittings, rusted fittings, really badly used carpets and spiders. the Riad is in maintained but due to its original look still shows up beautifully until you see what is being served for 90Euros a night. this is a cheap hostel at best.
