How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe location was perfect, the staffs were kind, and the guests were so friendly too, it was like a family.
Our room was so old, the beds were old and ugly, the, the wall was falling apart, under the bed it was dirty. There is an A/C working all night and all we got was a duvet cover as a blanket and it was so cold that we got sick. (But at least it had A/C, it's better than a hot night.

Verified reviewThe staff was really friendly to me. As far as I understood, the place is an old glory, which used to win awards in the past. Today it is cozy and deliciously decadent. Located in a residential neighborhood, at a seven-minute walk from the frenziness of Balluta Bay, it does its job of providing affordable lodging to unpretentious backpackers.
The place is small and in desperate need of renovation. The ground floor is a single room with a reception desk, couches and tv, and a shabby kitchen. The stairs convey voices to the bedrooms at the upper floors, but nobody really cares, not even at 3am. So, if you are a party animal, just go with the flow. If you are laying in bed, be sure to be a heavy sleeper, or have your earplugs ready. Earplugs worked for me.
Dear Enrico, Thank you for sharing your experience and for highlighting our friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and convenient location. We appreciate your feedback and will keep it in mind as we continue to improve. Safe travels! Best regards, Gera and the Hostel Malti Team.

Verified reviewWhere to begin: 1. It is on a hill around nothing, every time you have to walk up from the beach and down again to get anywhere or shop 2. The bathroom is not clean and there is 1 for 2 rooms of 8 each. So 2 showers and 1 toilet for 16 people. 3. There seemed to be a man sleeping on the couch every night and I think he was just paying them under the table because he never went to a room, but we could not use the couch hang out area because he was always there sleeping 4. Don’t be fooled by the hot tub, it is rarely open or on and in summer they refuse to turn on heat, so it is a cold tub, which no one wants to use because it is cold 5. Limited reception hours and they are not very helpful 6. Marco Polo is their sister hostel and much better 7. They never change the door code and there is no secure luggage storage if you leave your bags, they just say put them on floor by door, but anyone with the code could come in and just take your stuff. They need a locked luggage storage or need to change the door code often 8. It just seemed like they didn’t care
The kitchen was ok and the roof is nice and the tours and bar at Marco Polo are nice.
Dear Jeremy, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad you appreciated the kitchen, roof area, and the tours and bar at Marco Polo. Verified reviewPrice is cheap for Malta I guess and can walk to st Juliens
Not in a great location, up the hill and nothing around, limited reception hours, a bit dirty, hot tub never really open. The sister hostel Marco Polo is nicer and has rooftop and a bar and organizes tours, but it is a 20 minute walk to that hostel

Verified reviewI thought the cleanliness and the people working there saved my review. The workers were very friendly
The place felt more like a prison, very dark. There were no lights in the bunk beds, a very cramped room for fourteen people, and only one air conditioner. The silence rules were not enforced; people were constantly coming in and out of the room, talking loudly, slamming the door, and turning on the lights. This happened several times during the early hours of the morning. Sir, if you are looking for rest, this is not the best place.
Dear Daiana, Thank you for sharing your honest feedback. We’re truly happy to hear that our staff and cleanliness made a positive impression on your stay — we’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to the team. We’re sorry to hear that your experience with the dorm environment fell short of expectations. We understand how important rest and comfort are, and we take your comments seriously. We’ve taken note of the issues you raised regarding lighting, room capacity, and noise disturbances, and we’ll be reviewing these points with the team to see how we can improve the experience for future guests. Safe travels! Best regards, Gera and the Hostel Malti Team

Verified reviewThe room was rather spacious, quiet and clean, towels were fresh. The air conditioning was working, which was essential in the heat of July. Close to the Balluta Bay and within walking distance to both Sliema and centre of St. Julian's (15- 20 min).
I asked the receptionist if they could store my luggage till my checking in, but the way they seem to understand "storage at the reception", was to leave the baggage right there in front of the desk, where virtually anyone could snatch it entering from the street. Hence, I decided to place it myself under the seat beneath the window to make it less visible. I failed to check it beforehand, but the room should definitely have a small refrigerator, if not a TV screen as well. The beach is indeed like 5 min away, but you have to walk down a steep hill.
Dear Zorica, Thank you for your feedback. We will keep your comments in mind and work on improving where needed. Safe travels! Best regards, Gera and the Hostel Malti Team
