A charming house in beautiful Isla/Senglea. A home away from home, you feel like a real local in the heart of quiet, peaceful suburbia. A short walk from the marina with bars, restaurants and the ferry to Valetta, a few shops and Isla's main bus stop. Fantastic views from the 2-level roof terrace which gets sun all day and has its own kitchen, shower and toilet. Modern bathroom, very spacious rooms. The breakfast basket was a nice touch to get you going. Jane was extremely friendly and helpful before, during and after our stay. She came to visit us personally to hear our feedback and discuss what we liked and what we perhaps thought could be better, taking a real interest in our opinions and in the experience of her guests. There wasn't anything we didn't like, and would definitely consider staying here again.

Generally, the house was clean to a basic standard, as you would keep your own home from day to day, but some of the deeper clean areas would benefit from more regular attention. Jane said she's thinking about some home improvements next year. We encouraged this as some simple changes could really elevate the experience. For example, really playing into the history of the house and styling the interior decor of each room to complement the medieval dining room (there are a lot of different styles of furniture, ornaments and paintings). The single beds in the twin room were quite springy and would benefit from new mattresses. There is a good amount of information located on the walls where you'd need it. These could be presented in a more polished, permanent way eg. on printed little plaques. Overall, nothing bad, more personal preference than anything else.

Senglea is a great location with many restaurants in the port that are within a 5-minute walk. This could be a better option, if more focus have been put on the details. Jane was a great host until we arrived, but as soon as when started flagging some issues, her attitude totally changed. It's easy to be a great host when things run smooth, but the difference between a good one and a bad one, is how you respond when things don't run smooth.I always put a lot of effort in my reviews, because I try to help the guests that are coming after me. I normally book based on the reviews, that is why a try to keep honest. 90% of my reviews are positive, but it this case, I can't.

As a typical old-style residential area, you need to take into account all the inconveniences you will face. Noicy area, during the mornings, so you can't sleep with the windows open. Impossible to find a slot for parking, even Jane says "free parking available", yes, buy try to find a spot when you come back from the beach or dinner. According to her, it's possible to park in front of the house on her personal parking lot, but it's always occupied by other neighbors. If you rent a car, you have a problem, but if you don't rent it, you will be totally dependent on Bolt or Uber. We expected the building to be medieval when we rented a medieval house, but not the other facilities/amenities. In July the weather is really hot, 25C or 77F at night, it's really difficult to sleep with the windows closed. The medieval fans, in 2 rooms, are 3 meters high, and the tower fans are older than my grandfather, so they are really noisy and are not enough. We had to sleep with both ceiling and tower fans running at the same time. Lets focus on the cleaning aspect. We haven't been as lucky as the other guests. Upon arrival, we noticed hair on the floor everywhere, and it worsened the following morning due to the daylight. I sent a message to Jane, asking for a cleaning lady, and she said, she would come to sweep it herself, what I asked not to do so, as it was clear that she is doing the cleaning herself, what I confirmed on my checkout. When we were about to have breakfast, there were 2 cream cheese in the freeze that were rotten, and I when I sent her a message saying so, she didn't even reply back. Although the kitchen ware was well-stowed, there was still a lack of cleaning. I hope that after this review, she will put more effort into cleaning.

Hi Juan, I am sorry if you did not enjoy your stay and I will look into the issues you raised. However, I feel you have not stated the real reason for your review which has nothing to do with the property but rather with the booking policy. I also do feel I had the patience of a saint with your group for the following reasons: First, your group gate-crashed the wrong holiday property, then you got thrown out that same evening, then you got lost and frantic in this tiny neighbourhood (despite having 4 GPS phones between you). Finally, at 11pm, I had to personally drive over to find you and bring you to the right place. Though my house details and photos are fully visible online and though you had full access info prior to your arrival (including photos of the facade), you found this irrelevant. I remember thinking this was quite a bizarre reply. Secondly, you wanted to leave the property - for entirely frivolous reasons - half an hour after checking in. Cancellation policies are clearly stated in the listing and on your booking confirmation. Hence, if you book a place, you accept to be bound by them accordingly. Thirdly, you brought with you an extra guest for whom you did not pay. Re food, you had no problem drinking all the mineral water, fruit juices, soft drinks, milk, wine and coffee or eating all the cookies and muffins I left you. What you did not wish to eat or drink, you could easily have thrown away. Re cleaning, you sent me rather aggressive messages at midnight about some hairs but you refused free cleaning. I am sorry if some hairs spooked you. Cleaning will be redoubled to avoid this. Please be assured that cleaning is a top priority and as owner, I insist on keeping to high standards. In fact, you must certainly have noticed the many cleaning products, brooms and cloths stowed in the house. Re equipment, it all works well, it is all re-tested prior to guest arrival and it is all regularly maintained. I feel your old grandfather would be envious to receive such constant care. Re transport, there is a bus terminus half a minute by walk from the house which connects to Valletta and several other places. There is also the fast ferry service to/from the Birgu yacht marina and Valletta. This can be independently verified online. Therefore, a rented car is not essential unless there is a specific need for it. Parking is a problem everywhere where there is a concentration of people and buildings e.g. Rome, Catania, Naples etc. so Malta is no exception. Please note there is no reserved parking in my street. It's all public parking. Finally, I always remained patient and polite with you and I assisted you willingly when you requested it during your stay. The reviews by all my other guests, especially those who stayed for a month, are the real assessment of the house and myself as a host.

We loved the town house in Senglea. It was a large, beautiful Maltese house of character. The location could not have been better, for newcomers to Malta, or for us. As visitors who are Maltese born, or with decades of visits to the islands, we were perfectly positioned in this urban village to revisit every corner of this immensely fascinating, friendly country. Whether by taxi, bus, ferry, or dhaisa, there was an extensive choice of transportation nearby. We also found ourselves steps away from shops that met all our needs. The fruit and vegetable seller was outside the door every morning at 9am (except for Sunday) and on Sundays we listened to all the near and faraway church bells ringing (not too early!). Just around the corner and down some stairs were breathtaking views and an endless choice of cafes and restaurants. The views from the house and the front door alone were enough to keep any visitor fascinated! We really enjoyed meeting our host. She couldn't have replied faster to any contact we made, and was friendly and very helpful. Locals were also very welcoming, keen to talk about Senglea and just chat as we met in the street. The house was so well supplied with all our needs, comfortable and spotless. Many evenings we had dinner on the roof terrace, entertaining family and friends. We stayed for a month, and would have loved to stay longer.

    Leaving!

Beautifully presented historic property in an amazing location above the fortified walls. The attention to detail was outstanding, and the views from the terrace are amazing. And a welcome food basket plus water juice and soda were a welcome addition. A wonderful stay.

The old house is beautiful and well stocked with everything we needed. It's possible it was built in the 12th C as that is when the church next to it was built. The kitchen is possibly the best stocked kitchen we've ever rented - we've rented a lot of houses over the years. Plenty of room to spread out - english speaking tv channels as part of the cable package - little stores with everything we needed nearby. Jane was very responsive to any request we asked for.

It was a little chilly since it's unheated but doable.

    Property response:

Good morning Russ, thank you for your kind words. I am glad you enjoyed your time at the house. I have also taken up your suggestions since I am always looking to improve my guests' experience. I wish you safe travels.
