How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

was not disclosed that there was no locks on the doors, the bathrooms were shared and were only 2 for 4 bedrooms that can sleep up to 24 people, the bathroom shower smelled like piss and the water pressure was bad, not to mention the window was facing other houses and was pretty obvious that they could see me change or shower. The rooms don’t have air conditioning and overall just a place to stay for one night then to go somewhere else. Location was also whatever there’s a huge hill and next to a freeway so kinda hard to navigate when walking
Greetings Paulina! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, and I'm so sorry that most of it was not so positive. The dorms are shared, with people (your room mates) coming in and out all the time, including staff to clean, lay beds etc. It would not be practical to have lockable doors in shared rooms, and generally people who are OK with sharing are OK with this, logically. You do have lockers for your valuables, so you can lock up anything that is dear to you. There are 3 bathrooms for 4 dorms, which is what is require by law and generally, people who book hostels are also OK with the fact that they're paying budget prices and so some waiting time is expected. Rest assured that the neighbours aren't interested at all in watching you change in the bathroom, but if you were worried, the windows had shutters. Maybe shutters are a new thing to this generation. But they're effective :) 'The room didn't have air conditioning'- it would have been great if you took the 20 seconds to read a really fool proof list of services and amenities we offer, before booking a place which was clearly not a fit for you. And as for the location, there's a magical App called Google maps, which already lets you see where a place is before booking it! Cool right? Wishing you many merry future travels. Penny

Verified reviewThere is a bus stop about 10 minutes from the hostel where you can go directly to the airport, Valletta, and the center of St. Julian's. The hostel is acceptably clean.
- It is a very noisy hostel, not a normal noisy room at a hostel, but a noisy hostel where you can't sleep well or at all - There is no air conditioning - As a solo traveller, I did not feel comfortable and safe I booked it and paid for 5 days and I couldn't stay more than 2 days. I strongly do not recommend this hostel if you want to enjoy your stay in Malta.

One generally books a hostel for the social aspect of it, and when you're sharing with other people some noise is to be expected. We are not a retreat in the middle of a rain forest. We don't make use of ACs, and this info is provided to you before you make the booking. But we can sing our policies and facilities till the cows come home, and still find someone who doesn't bother reading them, and feels the need nevertheless to post a negative review. Best., Penny

Verified reviewOnly bad side is location you need to pass the road to board a bus and also it is really hot without an air condition if you are not used to live like that. Everything else was good. Baho hostel provides everything you expected.

Keep in mind that the house is old such as the facilities. The bathrooms aren’t the newest anymore and you can see it. There are also only two bathrooms for the 4 rooms upstairs (24 people), which can get pretty crowded in the morning. We stayed here in August and it got really hot ( there is no air conditioning in the rooms), only fans.

Whilst undeniably being an old building (which is one of the few remaining villas in St Julians that didn't get developed into blocks of apartments, like the rest), we keep it well-maintained. There are 3 (not 2) bathrooms for 4 bedrooms, which is what is required by law to run a hostel, and also what the house can hold. We understand that the perception of hostels has changed over the years, but it's not usually surprising to have a little waiting time in shared & budget accommodation. That we have no aircon is written in our description, along with a reminder email, 3 days before your arrival when you're still in time to cancel if you missed our facilities. We will be installing a few ACs in a few dorms next season seeing that it seems to be so indispensable for some (but not for all). We kindly ask you to be more careful when reading a hostel's facilities & description prior to booking, so as not to be disappointed. Thanks Penny
