How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewWe visited Golden Shell Residence in April 2025. It's located in the beautiful peaceful village of Trou d'Eau Douce on the east coast of Mauritius. Small shops, bus stop, cash machine, all is nearby. The small public beach is in walking distance (10 minutes). Nice larger beach is in Palmar (4 km). The accommodation is clean and has a hair dryer, fridge, rooftop terrace, TV... The price is the best you can find on Mauritius. The owner is very helpful and offers you trips to nearby islands Ile aux Cerfs but also tours all around Mauritius and other activities for reasonable price. We forgot something in our room and he was so kind to send it all the way to Europe. Thank you again! If you want to visit the east coast, I would recommend to stay in Golden Shell Residence in Trou d'Eau Douce. Best price, friendly staff, nice village.
Of course please don't expect 5* hotel but there was nothing to complain about. The only thing that could be a bit unpleasant is the temperature. It's very hot in the room even with the fan turned to fastest. But with windows and doors opened it's quite good. The neighbourhood is very safe so you don't have to be worried there.

Extremly dirty, the bathroom has not been cleaned for ages, the toilet cistern was broken, the cover was up so you can see the dirty water, when you flush the toilet the water splashes, sometimes the cistern was just empty of water. The general smell was horrible, the door was a glass door covered with an old dusty dirty curtain. First day i came there was already a lizard living there. The area is very loud and dangerous especially when it gets dark.

Any issues with the bathroom were neither reported to us during your stay nor supported by photos or evidence. Your stay raised multiple concerns, including damages to property and violation of house rules by bringing in unregistered guests. You were also warned about associating with individuals known to pressure tourists for free services, which we take very seriously for the safety of all our clients. We strive to maintain a clean, safe, and respectful environment for every guest. Unfortunately, in this case, the negative review appears retaliatory following our request for you to pay for damages caused. Verified reviewNice place on the east of the island. We were in 2 separate comfortable rooms close to each other. The owner has small turtles. A piece away from here are some great beaches for snorkeling and Liitle island - my picture below.

It would be more good if provided with teabags, sugar and a bottle water. So that I could have enjoy a nice cup of☕ in the morning after a beautiful sleep😍 bathing soap was also missing 😄😄...

Verified reviewPrivate parking on-site. A line in front of the room to hang out wet clothes or towels. Central location (though that meant lots of noise), close to shops, restaurants, and... the post office. The bathroom was enormous and had really hot water (unique feat for bugdet stays on the island!). The host quickly and successfully addressed an issued with a water leak.
The room had no air con (didn't notice that when booking) and was under the building's roof, so got a bit stuffy. There was a rather loud and dusty fan which didn't move horizontally. The street outside got a bit noisy due to some loud mufflers... The washbasin was leaking water, which was fixed the next day, though. The toilet tank wasn't fixed, though, but that wasn't leaking, was just a bit "open" (nothing major, see picture).

Verified reviewThis is Budget Accommodation, however the property was immaculately maintained by the family who live and work in the building. The room was regularly cleaned, towels and sheets replaced, and to my surprise 24 hour hot water. Well worth the money. The room had a new TV, which allowed me the opportunity of using my Firestick to watch UK channels and sport. Car or Scooter rental is eventual here.
The Room faced a very busy main street, facing a Supermarket opposite, and one below. The noise was constant from 6am until 9pm. This did not bother me, but could be a problem for a family with small children. Parking (even in Winter) was difficult, sometimes impossible.
