How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

It's hard to rest at the hotel. The entire area surrounding the hotel is undergoing construction work, with new hotels under construction. You can hear banging, shouting, and loud noises constantly. It's impossible to sleep. At night, downstairs, there's a pool table where children play, and they drop balls, making the noise very loud and annoying. The mattresses on the beds are very worn, and it hurts your back. Reception isn't very helpful if you need it.

In front of and next to the hotel are two large construction workers who start working in the morning at 7 a.m. and finish at around 10 a.m. in the evening. The staff was friendly only on the first day, after that their mood and friendliness was as changeable as the weather forecast in the Maldives.

Verified reviewVery nice staff including reception staff, restaurant staff and also excursions center staff. Special thanks to Alvin who helped us a lot with our kids during the excursions (Shark day, Half day, night fishing, full day). I recommend this hotel to families with Children since they will be helped a lot. Also, the hotel view is very nice and is calm compared to the other hotels in Bikini beach. If we comeback to Maafushi, we will visit again Sunrise Beach Hotel or Sunset Beach Hotel under construction right now.

Verified reviewThis is the first negative review I’ve ever left on booking.com! Really disappointed with this hotel. This was our 2nd out of 3 hotels in the Maldives and by far the worst. We are budget backpacking and this was the most expensive hotel of the 3 but with the worst experience. Our room smelt of stale cigarettes which hit you as soon as you entered the room. Rude reception staff who couldn’t provide any information at all regarding the public ferry. Make sure you pay in USD as they charge a ridiculous exchange rate for local currency MVR, we were going to be charged an extra $25 for using local currency so we paid on card instead. Avoid this hotel, there’s far nicer hotels on the island for the same price. Breakfast was disappointing too!

Checked in late at 11pm so I asked for a bit of flexibility to check out after 2pm the next day as I had an excursion booked from 6:30am-2pm. They said they will check upon availability . My room booking Included breakfast but since I had the excursion , I didn’t get the breakfast and that’s okay. But they should have been more lenient with the check out time as I needed to shower after my excursion. I went back to the hotel to see that my room was UNLOCKED with no one there and they had taken my bag down to reception already. There wasn’t anyone at reception to explain that they had moved my bag, I just found it under their desk & waited for someone to come after 10-15 mins. There was no other check ins at that time so they could have still given me the extra time. I used their public shower room downstairs to shower which smelled pungent and it was dirty. Overall no room for consideration/ flexibility and bad service…

Verified reviewWe had a very pleasant stay at Sunrise Beach. The hotel is well located, just a short walk from the bikini beach and the main area of Maafushi. The rooms were clean and spacious, with good air conditioning and comfortable beds. Breakfast was also nice, with a decent variety of both local and international options. The staff were friendly and helpful, always available to answer questions or assist with bookings.

The beds were way too hard. There was not always hot water.

We asked for lower floor room because of little children (7&3), they placed us on 4th floor (no lift =big fail). There was no soap in bathroom. Anything we asked for them to do for us, they didn’t do. The breakfast and the facility where they serve it is like a slump, big fail.
